(CNN) – South Carolina gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley received a much-needed fundraising boost Monday after a blogger claimed to have had "an inappropriate physical relationship" with the Republican, her campaign told CNN.
"Nikki had more online donations yesterday than any other single day of the race," a Haley adviser told CNN. "The public knows an unfair personal attack when it sees one."
The adviser would not offer details on how much Haley has raised.
Regardless, any cash infusion is good news for Haley, who has trailed her three GOP rivals in fundraising for the duration of the campaign and just started airing two statewide television ads.
Haley has few staff, and has relied on outside groups and endorsements from national conservative figures like Sarah Palin to earn media exposure.
The allegation of the affair, made Monday by South Carolina conservative blogger and political consultant Will Folks, led to national headlines and threatened to derail Haley's campaign. But it also rallied conservative activists to Haley's defense.
Palin urged her Facebook followers to dismiss the accusation and Erick Erickson, the editor of RedState.com and a CNN contributor, told his readers to donate to Haley's campaign. On Tuesday afternoon, Erickson started an online "moneybomb" to help "combat the sleazy smears" against Haley.
Haley's opponents for the GOP gubernatorial nomination are Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, Attorney General Henry McMaster and Rep. Gresham Barrett.
On Tuesday, Haley's campaign said the candidate is determined to stay focused on the "issues that truly matter" in the gubernatorial race.
"For the past year now, South Carolinians have been subjected to much more frenzied media sensationalism than they ever wanted," campaign manager Tim Pearson said. "Nikki is determined not to contribute to that. She addressed these allegations forthrightly yesterday, not only in her initial statement, but also in both the Greenville Chamber of Commerce debate and at a media availability with reporters."
OOOHHH I get it! Make something outragous up and raise money on it like the Maddow for Senate lie Brown told.
Clever but dishonest
I can't wait until this finale. Forget Lost, I want to see the end to this one. Especially since we have so many "national conservative figures" behind this woman.
Ha...I'd love to say you might actually have something there "Moderate". Of course, one might wonder what 5 years worth of text messages and emails will reveal and why Folks would throw himself under the bus like that, making himself a pariah, whether the texts and emails show nothing...or even if they do (I mean, he still boffed her and she's not much to look at, let's be honest, and it's not exactly going to make you Mr. Popular to be involved in a publicized affair that brings down a marriage and a campaign). It's a cute theory, because it's fun to assume grand conspiracies and distrust anyone and everyone running for office or in the government, but I'm afraid it just doesn't make much sense. We'll see tho...I gots mah popkornz...
How dumb is the Democrats, all they have to do is pass immigration in that would force the Republicans to get 65% of the White vote, which is highly unlikly, the gop knows they cant win if the Democrats pass immigration because the Democrats would get 80% of the latino vote from here until forever.why cant the Democrats see this, the media in the gop have got the Democrats thinking immigration would kill their party, but in reality it would destroy the Gop.the media wont get ratings if the Democrats destroys the gop every 4yrs,but that is what going to happen if the Democrats pass immigration
Well i wonder how much darling Sarah gave to her. Bet it cost her a pretty penny to have Sarah campaign for her.
What happened to the code of chivalry down there in the Confederate States of America? A southern gentleman defended a woman's honor in by-gone days, not betray it. Well, I suppose that chivalry went up the chimney at Appomattox along with the rest of the Lost Cause.
This has got to be a fund raising scam.
Try this theory on for size. The political blogger
is a jerry springer wanna be and this lady is
innocent of any affair.
Just a theory from what I've seen from some of
the hate mail in letters on this site by anti-Republican
extremists. And by the way, Tulsa, you spell doll
DOLL not DOOL ( regarding Sarah Palin being hot.)
Does SC want to secede? If so, is there any way that the rest of the US can help them pack?
Behind every "sleazy" allegation there's truth.
Anybody who is endorsed by the shrilla' from wasilla should be banned from running for anything besides the fire breathing dragon she is!
If this is true I can't wait for it to come to light. This would be a smack in the gut for the quitter and her followers who are now might be wasting their money.
If it isn't, and I can't imagine why this guy would make it up if he can't back it up, then she is just another SC politician (won't even go there with what I think of that state and its politicians).
Being a cheater or having an affair doesn't always pretain to the male gender, so don't make it okay to give a woman a pass. Cheating and having affairs is an equal opportunity thing.
The Republicans spent 90 million of the taxpayer's money investigating President Clinton's sex life. Since that time the majority of the sexual news has been about their own slimy politicians, with a few Democrats thrown on the steaming, stinking pile. Maybe the whole American political process could be improved if we simply cared less about sexual morality and more about the way politicians run our Government! Hold them accountable for real change to health-care, Social Security, immigration reform, financial reform, and the two wars we're fighting. I wouldn't care if we provided every Congressman and Congresswoman with a prostitute, if they'd just do something beyond trying to get re-elected.
I'm sorry, but anyone that openly lets Palin support them won't get my vote. I'm guessing she's guilty of the affair. Why else would you turn to a sleeze bag for help. Instead of all the denial, why not step up and demand Will Folks prove his claim. Orrrrrrrrrr........would that be something you don't want to see all over the media? When he does.
Of course it's a fundraising scam...
If this is all a lie and a big conspiracy, why doesn't she sue for slander? I bet you all she won't.
What can I say? She thinks that if she follows in the current governor's "footsteps", she'll be a shoe-in for governor. That plus she's got Alaska's half-governor's blessing too. And the conservative hypocrites will all follow.
It is wonderful that donors are lining up to show "support." However, that is awfully sexist, isn't it? She should not need to be so protected...whoever came up with that leak, or whoever leaked "his" information in this way, should instead be shamed out into the open.
In any case, whether the charges are true, false, made up for political theater or political distraction, IT IS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS!
Conservatives are always quick to defend adulterous Republican lawmakers.
Isn't that special.
Considering this is a prominent Republican making the charges, there may be a modicum of truth to the whole matter. THIS IS NOT a Dem making the charge and is really NO ONES BUSINESS!
That being said, the conservatives make such an issue of "moral" values, perhaps they might want to tone it down just a little.
And this tells us what ... it pays to have an affair? Or that its ok if you're a Republican?
You don't have to worry if you are accused of affair as long you are a member of the republicon/teabomber party ...What a big hypocrisy from the so called conservatives!!!
When the news claims they have been told she made more money than any day in the campaign before, it literally could a few 100's dollars. By leaving the amount blank they are playing ambiguity politics and
that is simply a funding raising ploy. The affair that Palin had turned out to be nothing, but that was not brought to light by the man she was supposed to have had an affair with, nor someone who is a political blogger/writer with a major name and press cred to lose. Things have a way of coming out – so let it roll...
If Republicans can be counted on for any one thing, it's to be hypocritical about 'morality' and then have an affair while they preach.
South Carolina must be desperate to find a decent Republican candidate to run. What is wrong with the water there? Is there nothing else to do but have affairs? What happened to the party of "Family Values"? If this the best they have, the Democrats may have the best year EVER!
"The adviser would not offer details on how much Haley has raised"
And I wonder WHY... :) Maybe because her "adviser" is simply lying about those "donations"?
Come on! Who in her/his mind would donate to her campaing RIGHT NOW – just to find out (tomorrow perhaps?) that she is yet another cheating lying hypocrite? Please, be real...
She's a cheater! I feel for her ex-husband. to make matters worse, Sarah Palin comes to her aid. I'm a Republican that won't be voting for her.
