Borger: Oil spill's danger for Democrats

Editor's note: Gloria Borger is a senior political analyst for CNN, appearing regularly on CNN's "The Situation Room," "AC360°" and "State of the Union," as well as participating in special event coverage.

Washington (CNN) – There was a theory, back in the day, that if the president could only pass health care reform, the glow of that victory would spur him on to better things: more wins, more credibility for the governing Democrats, more reasons to keep Democrats in power.

So much for that.

Right now, there's a hole in the Gulf. We watch it every day as it dumps who-knows-how-many-thousands of barrels of oil into the pristine water, endangering everything around it. Maybe the anti-government crowd thinks it's fine to wait for BP to fix it; most folks just want it fixed, period.

If you drive a gas-guzzling pickup, SUV, or other vehicle, it's your fault, not NY politician who only wants your vote. Republican or Democrat, who cares? We, as Americans, own this problem. We let politicians give percs and subsidies to oil companies, we supported wars for oil companies, we sent our sons to die in deserts for oil companies, and we are solely responsible for this mess. Wake up and stop pointing the finger of blame at the "scapegoat de jour." Obama didn't create this mess. How simplistically ridiculous.

Please stop quoting "Rassmussen polls" They only poll people named Cheney... lol It's not accurate. Why do you think Hannity relies on it so much.

If you think the Government handling of the oil spill is a disaster wait until Obamacare takes effect and this same Government controls the healthcare of the entire nation!!!!

    Let's see.
1- Oil and Republicans are twins.
2- Drill baby drill was the national hymn of the republican party.
3- "we don't need more studies, we need to drill now" a direct Sarah Palin quote.
4- BP game more money to McCain than Obama in the last election by a wide margin.
5- The company that last worked on the this oil platform belongs to Aliburton (cheney's old company).

    How is this Obama's fault?

Rasmussen polls? You mean Republican polls, correct? They only poll conservatives and Republicans so how can anyone take this pollster seriously? Anyhow, Katrina was a natural disaster that could have been handled much better by the then Bush Administration. Ice in a dozen trailer trucks stuck up in Maine somwhere when the people needed it in Louisiana! How'd that happen among other blunders? 1,000 people died. Bush didn't handle this well, but it was a natural disaster – Bush isn't getting blamed for causing the Hurricane. How can anyone in their right mind blame Obama for causing this BP oil-rig spill? And, again, our government doesn't have the equipment to stop it. BP does. What do you want Obama to do exactly??

Obama has had no leadership in this at all. He would rather go golfing while the gulf dies. This man has no experience and should never have been elected to any public office. This man will go down as the most inept president in history. This spill is not Obama's fault but his non-response borders on treason. Plus his attempted bribery of Sestek is an impeachable offense.

Ya think? This is Obamas Katrina and he is handling terrible, but what did we really expect from a community organizer that voted present on many issues, instead of taking a position.....well we got it, a very indecisive man who cannot take responsibilty for his inaction and continues to attempt to blame Bush for everything, including the BP disaster.

When 911 happened on Bush's watch the blame went to his administration. The same with Katrina. Bush has been out of office for almost two years and before that you had the dems running congress...did the dems pass regulation for the oil companies? No in fact Obama received the most help in financial contributions from guess who??? Yep, BP...so don't keep blaming Bush for month that Obama has sat back and done squat...Why did he run out and do a fundraiser for Barbara Boxer when he should have been in the Gulf meeting with the best scientist and the military to try and fix this problem...Hurricane season is approaching as well..if they don't stop the oil what will happen should a hurricane hit that area...oil will be spread west, east, north and south....but I suppose any future hurricanes will also be Bushs fault...no well lets blame Cheney or Palin...never the current President.
