Borger: Oil spill's danger for Democrats

Editor's note: Gloria Borger is a senior political analyst for CNN, appearing regularly on CNN's "The Situation Room," "AC360°" and "State of the Union," as well as participating in special event coverage.

Washington (CNN) – There was a theory, back in the day, that if the president could only pass health care reform, the glow of that victory would spur him on to better things: more wins, more credibility for the governing Democrats, more reasons to keep Democrats in power.

So much for that.

Right now, there's a hole in the Gulf. We watch it every day as it dumps who-knows-how-many-thousands of barrels of oil into the pristine water, endangering everything around it. Maybe the anti-government crowd thinks it's fine to wait for BP to fix it; most folks just want it fixed, period.

How in the world can the oil gusher be Obama's fault ? People get a grip!!.It is now his problem but in no way did he cause this. Republicans PLEASE learn to read. How about Bush and Cheney? Think they had anything to do with it?

Sorry, you lost me right there. You clearly do not live in America or, at the very least, live under a rock.

let's see was it the Democrats that had the rally cry of "DRILL BABY DRILL"? I don't think so then how can the right wing GOP get away scot-free on this one?

The oil spill is a big distraction. Democrats as well as republicans need to worry about this. This isn't a partisan issue, it's a national one. Over the last 10 years the oil companies have gone unregulated and that is unacceptable. Democrats can steer the attention away from this disaster in the Gulf if they repeal DADT either this week or next week.

Remember America...the Taliban wants you to fail....from the Olympics to health care reform. The Taliban plan to clean up the gulf is to set it on fire...

Typical CNN – stir up the hate and division without thinking about long-term implications JUST FOR RATINGS.

Keep government out of our business.
Put the government in charge of fixing messes created by businesses.

    We need less government.
Send more government folks to guard us.

    Cut down on illegals.
Corporations hire them because they are cheap, but no penalties for corp.

    Cut spending.
Fix FL, CA, LA (the 3 states with most disasters) over and over and over, but don't raise taxes.

    WHICH IS IT?

Heathcare might have been passed, but don't forget that its still facing Constitutional challenges in about 37 states.

And when gas gets back to $4 a gallon, people are going to hate Obama and the Democrats just as much as they hated Bush and the Republicans – and are going to say it at the polls this November.

I don't want anything to happen to the Gulf. But I sure do want the demise of the modern day's immoral Democrats. Their way of life is intolerable. All the welfare, wine 'o's' and the illegals is going to cause the fall of this country. Get Erkel out of office now. Don't call this a racial thing label it as a moron thing.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 23% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-five percent (45%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -22. That’s the lowest Approval Index rating yet measured for this president.

I would think it's more of a danger to the party of Drill Baby Drill than to the Democrats.

Practice makes Perfect, so I say keep practicing making excuse after excuse after excuse and sooner or later everyone will have the perfect excuse as to why our Commander in Chief did not take immediate action over this disaster, after all it is our country's ocean not BP's ocean.

Yes we have to watch once again as Obama tries to clean up a mess started by BUSH, who thought the oil industry and his buddies would 'self-regulate' themselves...instead they opted to NOT install more safety measures in Gulf Oil rigs, and here we are!

    Thanks Dubya!

Obama is hoping to blame the whole mess on BP and walk away from it.He knows how unpopular oil companies are and hopes to use this to his advantage. To heck with the damage this is going to do .As long as he can walk away smelling like a rose,it's ok with him.

Gloria, tell us how the Administration should deal with corporate blunders like bad practices which lead to oil leaks. Are you suggesting Republicans would be better able to solve this problem? There seems to be a plethora of simplistic thinking about remedies, but the complexity
of science and engineering cannot effectively address this catastrophe, let alone the Administration which gets no useable cooperation from across the aisle. We have a lot of words for this situation, but no remedies are evident yet.

Before placing any blame lets look back at the deals Bush signed with big oil in 05. Specifically, the one that let's them opt out of being monitored by the EPA. So hows that personal responsibility, business will do the right thing, no regulation and drill baby drill working out for ya?
