Borger: Oil spill's danger for Democrats

Editor's note: Gloria Borger is a senior political analyst for CNN, appearing regularly on CNN's "The Situation Room," "AC360°" and "State of the Union," as well as participating in special event coverage.

Washington (CNN) – There was a theory, back in the day, that if the president could only pass health care reform, the glow of that victory would spur him on to better things: more wins, more credibility for the governing Democrats, more reasons to keep Democrats in power.

So much for that.

Right now, there's a hole in the Gulf. We watch it every day as it dumps who-knows-how-many-thousands of barrels of oil into the pristine water, endangering everything around it. Maybe the anti-government crowd thinks it's fine to wait for BP to fix it; most folks just want it fixed, period.

You can origamy this BP DISASTER all you want, and you still can't make it look like Obama had ANYTHING to do with it.

maybe since President Obama is the "Messiah" as the right likes to snidely call him, then he should have flown down there and stuck his finger in the hole to stop spray. Let's look at this for what it is really worth, Those in this country that don't support the president will blame him for EVERYTHING that happens, NOTHING he does will satisfy them, and they will NEVER give him credit for good things that do happen while he's in office. But then that goes with the territory still at least he's not like Sarah Palin and quit when the going got rough....well at least not YET!

...and if he had gone in immediately you would have been screaming about how Obama was spending tax payers money instead of making the oil companies pay

    Remember the alamo

your comments are (always) just not worth dignifying with a response.

The latest catastrophe in the Gulf is not the fault of the President. I think if there was a lightning storm in Kansas, the gop would blame President Obama. This latest mess is once again brought on by big oil and the gop-These articles just help increase ignorance...they do not serve the country in any way...they just give another box to stand on and yell meaningless rhetoric. Lets stick with the facts-not sensationalism.

Pristine waters? Are you kidding? That gulf is as polluted as our oceans!
Both parties should suffer. Where were the regulations covering the gulf during the many years of Republican control?
With the problems facing this country in January 2009 were certianly list toppers and regulaiton on enviormental issues were put on a back burner.
We had a war to bring under control. We had a financial system to bring back under control. We had healthcare costs to bring under control. The eco-safety of the country even today is a non-issue to too many Americans, so this was not going ot be an issue until something like this happens.

The looking the other way, passing policies favoring the oil companies, no regulations enforced, no safety precauctions instilled that were practiced by the previous administration and the republicans are greatly responsible for the diaster we have now.
But. of course, we cannot expect anything else from CNN but to blame President Obama.
As their ratings continue to drop, they continue to become another Fox.
They do not realize that intelligent Americans no longer believe they have any integrity or honor, just do whatever they can to support and make the republicans look good.

So once again the idiots who CREATE the mess . . . de-regulation of the oil industry because of the money they received in campaign money from the oil industry . . . expect the President to FIX the mess for them overnight!

@Sniffit . . . Could not agree with you more!

    I don't agree,
This is NOT a Government problem.
It is a Private Companies problem.
Drill Baby Drill.....Keep Government out of our Businesses!!
That Nazi, Socialist, Communist Obama...trying to take over our
businesses!!!!! and NOW the same fools are crying that the Government isn't bailing out and taking over the Private Company or Cleaning up the mess at the shore of each state? Too Bad!!! Maybe in the future these same Drill Baby Drill and Keep Government out of our Private Businesses morons will be careful what they wish for and campaign for! Reap what you sow folks!!! You can't have it both ways....NO MATTER WHAT UNPLANNED REALITIES SLAP YOU IN THE FACE!!!!!! You're either stand with the Government or you don't!!!
I do not want my tax dollars spent or my Military that I pay for used on this problem that a Private Company created!!!
I cannot believe CNN is giving these hypocrits a voice. You should be ashamed. The Governor of each state affected should be taking responsibility for their shores, Not the Federal Government!!!!

i am glad president obama is holding BP responsiable for this disaster.if he takes over what is he supposed to do? PB has the equipment, knowhow and should be the one fixing this mess. obama should wait untill all is cleaned up and file charges of manslaughter against BP,fire everybody at mms and supeona all the oil men in that secret meeting dick cheney had with them right after he took office. THERE IS WHERE THIS WHOLE MESS STARTED GOING DOWN HILL. get rid of any and all that was any part of the oil business in the bush era.

What I don't understand is how any American can say they want Obama down there to take over. He is the President for love of pete. Just what do think he can do, shovel sand and make it go away.

If all the people that is yelling do something Government could just listen to themselves. First they want the government out of thier business and then when something happens they say why wasn't the govenment there to help out. For the love of Pete make up your mind. Get real.Don't exect things to get fixed over night.

The stupid Republicans would just get of their NO BUTT and work with the President and the Democrats to make this country better before we end up like Greece.

I would like to hear just one idea out of the Republicans mouth that could help that did not sound like if you don't do it my way then we will just sit in the corner and pout until you give us our way. God did not make us a nursery school of two year olds to run the country. He made adults and if the Republicans don't want to act like adults, then don't even bother to ask them for thier ideas.

Thanks to Obama, my older children will at least have Health Care and if we are lucky our credit cards won't have 30% interest rates on them.

I say we put a band on all oil drilling on any coast until the Oil Companies can show us proof that they have followed all regulations.

Also Fire all personnel at MSM and then put a ball of fire under any new hires.

Just what would John McCain if he was President for all this mess. Guess what there is not much he could do. Congress has to do their bussiness before the President can sign anything.

The President is handling more than one crises at all times. Could the Republican do that.

    I think NOT.

Regarding earlier post by >>>Remember the Alamo <<<, who stated:
I don't want anything to happen to the Gulf. But I sure do want the demise of the modern day's immoral Democrats. Their way of life is intolerable. All the welfare, wine 'o's' and the illegals is going to cause the fall of this country. Get Erkel out of office now. Don't call this a racial thing label it as a moron thing.

This blogger is typical of is the fundamental flaw in Republican supporters.

Don’t want people on welfare, but I supported the Bush admin. and the manner in which they trashed the economy resulting in lots more folks on wlatefare.

Don’t want oil in the Gulf, but I fully supported Dick Chaney removing the $500k Acoustic shutoff valve that would have prevented this catastrophe. He also keep the $low 75Mill limit on damages as effective disincentive for BP and the like to take needed precautions.

Don’t want big Government telling states what to do, but when we get a boo boo we will cry like babies and ask the Feds to save us.

Dems are immoral because what? is it they want Insurance Companies to stop dropping insurance payments to people for any trival flaw they can find on the persons application and how dare Dem they try to provide affordable insurance to those, who under no fault of there own, find them self with a preexisting condition. No, If jesue walked the earth today as a man, I think Jesus would be a Dem and Republicans would be trying lynching him.

Dems support illedgals, but it was the Republicans that ignored employers who encouraged illegals to come to this country and work like slaves lowering the pay rate for legals and thus creating a large number of working poor Americans who need government support.

I remember the Alamo! I grew up in that City and as much as I love Texas and Texas history, the facts are that the folks that died at the Alamo were not real bright and neither are you!!!

The Government is not in the oil business. They didn't drill the well. They didn't cause it to rupture. In NO WAY is the government is not RESPONSIBLE for the runaway polluting well. Let's never forget that.

The WH will clean up this big business mess much like it did on Wall Street and in the American automobile industry all while the past GOP blowhard statements about "GOVERNMENT Takeovers, SOCIALISM, BIG Government" fall silent as media types allow them to skate away from their reckless statements.

The WH must demonstrate that it is using its power for good .... Use POWER

ORDER BP to deploy skimmer ships to pick up oil before it reaches shore

FORCE BP to stop using the dispersant that the EPA says is unhealthy.

ARREST BP, Haliburton & TransOcean Executives for the deaths of 11 people.

MAKE BP work with an International Team of Off shore Oil drilling experts that will manage the solution to the leak.

Why don't you crawl back under the rock you came from??? Or better yet go post on a site that WELCOMES racists because this site . . . DOESN'T! People like you make me sick to my stomach. You DARE to call the POTUS "ERKEL" and then claim it's not a "racial thing"???!!! You claim that you "don't want this to happen in the gulf" and yet see this as a way to defeat the "immoral Democrats"???!!!!! People like YOU are the ones who are immoral and people like YOU will cause the "downfall" of this country NOT the "wine 'o's and illegals", you POS!

People should listen to different news outlets, especially those with credible scientific and engineering guests, and then make intelligent decisions based on facts. The Government has been involved since the beginning. The Coast Guard and Fema were there immediately. I heard the governors saying how great Fema had been. As late as last week the four governors were praising the federal help but I guess the RNC didn't like that so Bobby Jindl changed his mind and came out with his hysterical news conference. NASA has been involved and this morning that was outlined. Top scientists from around the world have been consulted and I heard an oil person say that all of the big oil companies were trying to help out with solutions. A really clever engineering professor from Houston University explained the whole thing with the most sense yesterday. Another person who sounded pretty sharp just told Ali Velchi that people need to put the pictures you are showing in perspective. The pipe that the oil is gushing out of is really only two feet in diameter and is one mile down in the middle of the ocean. The pictures make it look much larger and worse than it is. Did the government help oversee and clean up the Exxon mess in Alaska? Don't think so. I think the Republicans realize that their ties to big oil, their lax policies when this was built and the repercussions of their "Drill, baby, drill" policies is going to come out so they are now trying their best to discredit the present administration who has had to solve countless big messes left by them for him to solve. When you air interviews with people giving their version of events you should disclose their political leanings. It makes a huge differnce. The news media is leading this story about the administration and a lot of it is speculative, exaggerated and just plain partisan. Report the news, don't make it.

Lefties bashed Bush for reading stories to school kids o n9-11. Obama is fout and about funding raising for Boxer STILL trying to sell healthcare, and planning a vacation to Chicago over the upcoming holiday weekend (all the while ignoring a presidental tradition of visiting Arlington, by the way). As for you libs fusing about drill baby drill, consdier this:

    1. No a single drill baby driller wanted this disaster
    2. No a single drill baby driller, drilled anything
    3. Obama wanted to expand off shore drilling
    4. The LIBERAL New York Times is reporting THIS Administration just approved 4 additional off shore drilling permits

You liberals have said NOTHING about items 3 and 4. I wonder why!!

What in the world does this drilling accident have to do with Democrats, or Republicans for that matter. Why is everything the fault of elected officials? We let a foreign company drill in our federal waters. They followed the lax safety guidelines that were part of the U.S. policy and the safety requirements weren't enough to prevent this accident. The only thing that the U.S. government can do is to require additional safety standards going forward. I do think that it is baffling that the Republicans who never wanted any government restrictions on big business and loved to chant, "drill baby drill", are now saying the government should be involved. Could it be politics?

What do you people expect Obama to do? Go down there with a mop and bucket, dressed in a work shirt with his name on it and clean it up? It is time to force these people to suffer the consequences of their actions. BP should spend every penny they haveto fix this problem they created. Every Congressman and Senator who voted for deregulation of this oil industry and offshore drilling should go down there and clean this up. This is not a Government problem, you can't gripe about "too much big government" and then cry everytime there is a problem for the government to come to the rescue. I don't want to pay for this mess. I don't want to pay for Wall streets mess. They should have let those Wall Street bankers fail. BP needs to step up to the plate, not call in a pinch batter.

    @ ajax

PLEASE explain to me how this is President Obama's fault? Heck down here in Texas Gov Perry is calling it an "act of God" and Perry is a TOTAL wack-job in my opinion. This is no more Obama's fault than it would be Bush's fault if he were president at the time. You righties need to get a grip on reality and stop living in Limbaugh-Beckville.

Couldn't agree more with GI Joe. And exactly how did Obama cause this? Perhaps he has been in touch with Aqua Man and convinced him to start blowing up oil rigs in order to further his socialist/facist/french/gay agenda. Yeah, that's the ticket, it's all Obama and his force of pink shirt wearing environmentalists that somehow caused this disaster. Get a grip people. The only thing the gov't can really do is start handing out pink slips at the MMS, they are not equiped to handle this kind of disaster. Any by the way, shouldn't BP held responsible, I mean it was their rig right...they weren't following the rules....represented to congress that no such disaster could occur and if it did, they had a plan? What's up "party of personal responsibility"

Poking massive holes in planets (Earth) is something we really did not know the full consequences of. Men (humans) are now responsible to figure out how and if it can be controlled. This time it may take a village to correct. Anyone and everyone here who uses oil for anything in their day to day living is who to blame. In other words, no one entity can be blamed for how the earth is reacting. Certainly not a political party to which you want now to have more control but insist the government has too much control. Make up your minds.
God bless the underwater world for we have made a mistake

Whats wrong with our journalists nowadays. Instead of using their power of writing and try to gather ideas from people Gloria Borger is jumping on who to blame and who will be voted out or in!
Nobody wanted this to happen. It has happened and what is needed now is the solution. Is what she has written her contribution of getting the solution?

Hey Remember the Alamo – you are the problem with America – too many old people tied to some fake ideal of morality that doesn't exist and never did – and played upon by the Repubs who pretend to be righteous only to fornicate hate, spread lies, and try to control an entire population based on their supposed religious beliefs – all in the land of separation of church and sate – the country was founded on lies like this.

Exactly what is it that the government is supposed to do besides help supply resources to THE STATES (who constantly cry for the government to stay out). And I am sure that those states with all those offshore drills did not have enough boons for their coastlines. After all why spend money on a maybe right. GEEZ

This man made disaster (another gift from the previous administration's lack of governance) is exactly why drill baby drill is no longer being chanted. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR.... you may just get it.

To be fair, Dems have been in trouble ever wince with the Health Care bill. This President has seen some unfortunate incidents and I am happy to see and laugh about them.

And with the Sestek position. Supposedly the White House offered him a job during the primaries. Something has to come out of that. The truth will eventually come out.

But Dems have been in quite trouble for quite a long time. Is still early in the process and a lot can happen. I don't care about the Dems, I don't. I've come to realize the promotion of freedom and the indivual itself has meaning. Fighting has no value, only consequences. They really gotta stop the donkey before Obama keeps riding them til there is no line...BTW, is there a line that stops?
