Conservative group: DADT repeal will increase 'homosexual misconduct'

A prominent conservative group is warning against a change in the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy.

A prominent conservative group is warning against a change in the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy.

Washington (CNN) - As lawmakers consider a compromise plan to repeal "don't ask, don't tell," a prominent conservative group is arguing that overturning the policy against gays in the military will increase "homosexual misconduct" - even "sexual bullying, male rape, and forcible sodomy" – in the armed services.

On Wednesday, the Family Research Council held a conference call with reporters featuring retired military leaders and officials from the conservative group.

Senior Fellow for Policy Studies Peter Sprigg argued that publicly available information from the Pentagon on sexual assaults in the military, along with other information, proves that the military currently has a problem with "homosexual misconduct."

"Homosexuals in the military are three times more likely to commit sexual assaults than heterosexuals are, relative to their numbers," Sprigg said. "We believe this problem would only increase if the current law against homosexuality in the military, which was enacted in 1993, were to be repealed."

Sprigg referenced a report he authored which argued that if the law is overturned, more gays will join the military, thereby causing more assaults. The report also said gays will violate military regulations without fear of being discharged, and that victims will be afraid of reporting assaults by gays.

Retired Col. Richard Black, who previously served in the Pentagon, went even further, using graphic language to suggest what might happen if the "don't ask, don't tell" policy were repealed.

"It's a question of whether we will force soldiers to bond with homosexuals in the showers and the barracks, knowing that doing so will result in sexual bullying, male rape, and forcible sodomy," Black said. "There's a reason that we don't make men and women shower together. And for the same reason, we must not force men to shower with homosexuals – it simply does not work."

A prominent gay and lesbian advocacy group vehemently disagrees.

The Human Rights Campaign is actively campaigning for the repeal of the military policy. The group's website calls it a "failed law" and cites support for its repeal from Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Michael Mullen.

"Americans recognize that on the battlefield, it does not matter whether a soldier is lesbian, gay or straight; what matters is that a soldier gets the job done," HRC's website states. "This discriminatory law hurts military readiness and national security while putting American soldiers fighting overseas at risk."

HRC also attacks the notion that harassment by gays will increase if the military policy is repealed.

"This legislation will not lead to increased harassment or claims of discrimination. Repealing DADT will only ensure that lesbian and gay service members are treated equally. The bill permits the U.S. military to prescribe and enforce conduct regulations as long as they are designed and applied without regard to sexual orientation," the HRC website states.

A recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows that 78-percent of Americans say that openly gay people should be allowed to serve in the military, while just 20 percent say they should not be allowed to openly serve.

The FRC's Peter Sprigg sure has some wild and quite vivid – I use the term "fantasies" – about what it would be like to be in the showers with a bunch of homosexual men.

I think that the key problem is that men commit much more sexual assaults then do female in society. That – unlike Sprigg's unfounded stats that homosexuals commit higher amounts of assaults in the military – is true and well-founded. Thus, maybe Sprigg's thinks we should have an all female military?

WE ALREADY HAVE GAYS IN THE MILITARY! When are the Republicans ever going to admit that. They are not going to be "hitting on" straight people any more than a straight person "hitting on" any person of the opposite sex. It's a ridiculous. I have many gay friends and the only people who are uncomfortable around them are men who have a predetermined opionion of ALL gays.

Look at the facts! How many women in the military are abused by the brave heterosexual men? Who are the ones molesting and raping children? What about domestic violence? Child trafficking? etc., etc.
The people I know who are homosexual are truly good people...caring, sincere, peaceful, honest...would that we had more like them in every walk of life...including the military! Ignorance breeds stupidity.......

This is the same argument made in 1945 when the army was desegrating units. I would ask Isreal, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, et al, all of who have gays in themilitary how it has impacted them-the answer-not a bit

The ONLY difference between pre and post DADT is that the same standards of conduct will be applied to homo as is applied to hetero misconduct.
I am ever amazed that "Conservatives" believe that treating ALL people equally is wrong.

AnProf: How in the world will cohesion in the armed forces "break down" if men and Women serving in the military are able to be who they are. Read up on the meeting that happened last week with military leaders from other countries and there discussion about gays and lesbians in the military. Basically, in case you have blocked all sources of information that you don't agree with, the upshot was...."makes no difference, if anything, our military has gotten better". Yes, the military has a lot on it's plate right now...and wouldn't it be nice if the people serving our country, straight, gay, whatever....can be who they are....all the issues involving the military need to be dealt with...why put one aside? Seriously....what will really change. fact I'm willing to bet we will have an upsurge in the number of extremely qualified people wishing to serve our country.

"I'd like to see the source of this information, as it makes no real sense."

It basically breaks down as an 8.2% reported incident rate and then some really crazy idiot math tricks to get down to about 2.5%-3% of the population being gay, which they claim is the percentage the homosexual community itself endorses. It is, however, not the percentage they endorse, but rather a purposeful mischaracterization thru manipulating the math. Google it. There are cites that quite clearly explain (with ample citation/footnotes to reputable source material) why the numbers the Hatred Research Council uses are bunk.

BTW, they use the same dirty math manipulation to claim that pedophilia is about 3 times more likely to be committed by homosexuals, which is also objectively proven false by reputable scientific studies, so you can look that up too.

Wow! I just read a posting in this "slot"....
"The Majority of people don't want Gay Rights forced upon us"
This cannot be a belief!!! OMG!!! 75% of the Country does not agree with that statement.
"Gay Rights"??? All citizens that work and pay taxes are and should be treated equally no matter what!!!!!!!!!!!
What anyone's sexual preference is is certainly not anyone's business, yet alone anyone's place to pass judgement.
We live in a diverse country, with every color, every race, straight, gay, sane, nuts, normal, handicapped, mentally challenged and people will either need to adapt and grow with the country or they will be left behind living a hateful, hate filled, sour, depressing life. If people hate everything that is different from them, then there is no way any of them will ever truly be happy. I can't believe anyone would choose a life of misery instead of embracing all the diversity and learning so many new things from so many different people!!! We are truly blessed to live in such a wonderful country!

Where on earth is this man getting this data from that if DADT is repealed, same sex rape will be rampant?!? Have studies on this subject been done in countries that don't discriminate against gays/lesbians in their military? Most of those country's military leaders have SUPPORTED an inclusive military. If they had constant rapes going on, do you think they'd be supporting it then? The leaders in sexual misconduct and rape in our military are HETEROSEXUAL men and it is unlikely they'll lose that disgusting title regardless of DADT being repealed.

So what they are saying is that hetrosexuals commit fewer sexual crimes than homosexuals??? As a female veteran in the US Navy I can tell you that I endured sexual harrassment from men daily and often. Mainly because there is a way more men that serve, so repealing DADT will not increase or decrease incidents of sexual assault. It will happen regardless, if they want to help highlight the incidents of sexual trauma that occur amongst any servicemember.

Once again a "moral majority conservative group" with NO scientific basis for their comments what so ever, is demonstrating that the ONLY thing they truly know anything about is Rectal Cranial Inversion!!!

Makes you wonder what God these homophobic people pray to. I think they actually believe the utter nonsense they say.
DADT needs to be repealed now.

There math is really based on mistaken beliefs: right now the worst sexual problem in the military is heterosexual men raping women in the military: The rapists don't ask and the women don't tell!

Just more homo-phobic scare tactics. If they will fight for this country in Iraq and Afghanistan it is more than I would do and I'm straight!

We already have rules and regulations in place to deal with sexual misconduct. If repealing DADT DID lead to an increase in said misconduct, those rules and regulations would deal with it. Better to deal with the increased misconduct than to discriminate against the honorable ones who want to serve openly. Not sure why that is a hard concept for so many to see.

Are they trying to tell us that BECAUSE of DADT, the gays that are already in the military are holding themselves back from raping the straight guys, and that if DADT is repealed, they will no longer be able to contain themselves? This is a joke, right?

"And you get these numbers from where? A Christian Think-Tank? Sorry, that was a contradiction in terms."

So his sources are questionable, but "Gay men i talked to on this subject" is reliable? I would not be so quick to judge all Christians as non thinkers, when you clearly present a contradiction yourself.

It's important that we have unit co-hesion. Favoritism will create
jealousy when a guy is promoted because he's a better bed partner
or because you're gay and you want to favor gays over straight guys
for promotion. Then there's the problem of gay officers selecting who
goes on a dangerous mission, a straight guy or a gay one. This will
not be good for military morale.

  22. LacrosseMom(the real one)

I have been posting this all day, and I will continue since CNN did not cover it:

A recent poll found that....... 78%....... 78% of Americans FAVOR ABOLISHING DADT!

ONLY....... 20%....... want to keep it!

Anyone watch the Chris Matthews show tonight? On (gasp) MSNBC? He read a letter on the air from a soldier fighting in Afghanistan about how DADT keeps him telling lies.

Again.......... 78%...... that's ..........78% of AMERICANS FAVOR GETTING RID OF DADT!

I have never heard of a gay person attacking a so called has always been the other way around. Now the problem is this. Men and women away from their spouses and lovers may be prone to attack a gay person to relieve his or her natual impulses(mostly men).
Otherwise this debate is a crock of...............

Only ignorant people would comment negatively on such "fodder". I know quite a few gay people and I would trust them MORE with my back/life/children than I would some so called "str8" people. Not all of them want to get into your pants (so don't flatter yourself) and not all of them are sexually active to the point that it is a top priority to do so. This world is so outta touch with reality...Beau Colby
