Washington (CNN) - Education Secretary Arne Duncan says President Obama "absolutely supports" a congressional proposal for $23 billion in emergency education spending in order to stave off teacher layoffs and cancellation of summer classes.
Duncan told CNN Wednesday that the emergency spending request is needed to head off "an education catastrophe, " in which as many as 300-thousand teachers across the country could be laid off.
Duncan also said that without the extra spending, some school districts will be forced to eliminate summer school and after-school programs.
Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Rep. George Miller, D-California, are behind the bid in the Senate and House to approve the extra spending.
Duncan has asked Congress to add the money to an emergency spending measure, being considered this week, that would fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The top Republican on the House Education committee, Rep. Jon Kline, R-Minnesota, opposes the request, charging that it would worsen the nation's long-term fiscal stability by adding another $23 billion to the federal deficit.
Because of concerns over the growing federal budget deficit, congressional supporters of the measure have questioned President Obama's commitment. But Duncan declared that President Obama is "a hundred percent supportive" of the emergency spending.
Duncan said he believes most taxpayers would support the added federal spending because "this is an emergency...no one wants to see class size go from 25 to 40, no one wants to see summer school eliminated particularly for disadvantaged kids."
Duncan urged Congress to quickly provide the extra spending: "This is not something Congress can debate for four or five months. We need to act and we need to act now. "
says President Obama "absolutely supports" – of course BHO absolutely supports spending money we do not have....that is what he lives for as he drives our country further and further into bankruptcy!!!
You libs are so foolish it is amazing.
Yes, yes, EVERYTHING is an "emergency" these days. It allows the lyin' DemocRATS to bypass "pay as you go".
The only "emergency" here is the loss of support from teachers unions if the DemocRATS fail to protect their jobs. Why should teachers be exempt from the bad economy? Big government at all levels must be protected at all costs I guess.
I guess saving union jobs is the only job loss worthy of "emergency" status. Truly sickening.
And just where are they going to cut $23 billion to fulfill the PayGo requirements?????????????????????????
We spend more and more each year on the War on Drugs and building jails than we do on education. Summer school, music, the arts, shop classes all need to get eliminated and the $ used for the core subjects instead. Otherwise don't complain when we have to import workers from India or China...or just replace U.S. jobs altogether to an outsourced overseas workforce.
Drill baby drill oh I thought this was the haley post, my bad, we really need the Palin education initiative for for the Communication for Dummies 101 class lololol
Every day seems to bring another "emergency" need for money for some cause......need few billions for extending very long unemplyment compensation bill.....need another $ 180 billion for another jobs/stimulus bill (after a $ 1 billion stimulus bill last year!) and now some more billions for teachers.......this all has to stop and we have to only spend the money that we take in as a federal government! All americans have to live this way and it is time that our government do the same....like all of us that have to make tough decisions each week about how we spend our limited funds our government has to do the same!!!!!!!!!!!!
And is your dad going to pay for it.
Let the parents and not the tax payers take the burden of their own children.
Note to Democrats.....Stop Spending Money.
C'mon people, look around. The country is broke and all of the states are broke. Why? Because of the idiotic democrat party proposing one entitlement after another for the past 50 years and because the republicans not having the intestinal fortitude to stop them. Conservatives have been saying for years that these entitlements are unsustainable and....here we are.
spending is the problem with education. TOO MUCH.
look at Arne Duncan's record in Chicago.
he like Obama is a 100% failure.
"We need to act now!"... hmm, where have I heard this before from this administration?
These people are pathetic. I'm starting to think Obama thinks less of the general American populace than I do, and that's not much.
more of that free Obama money.
Why didn't t they use some of the wasted stimulus money and spend it on something that really mattered.?Then, they wouldn't be back at the feeding trough again asking taxpayers to prevent another education catastrophe.
I do believe the federal government should focus on education to a much greater extent than it has in the past. Education is a person's ticket out of poverty and ignorance. If we invest in educating our youth, we will be a stronger, more secure nation and have more intelligent, dedicated youth – less crime and prisons. It's a great investment, to be sure!!
Can't wait to hear the Rabid Right screaming about this . . . ok well, I CAN wait, but you know they're going to anyway! We know how low on the totem pole their concern about education is. An ignorant voter is an easily manipulated voter . . . that's the Repub platform!
Another "emergency" to get around the pay-go rules democrtats themseves implemented. Just throw more money at it, lefties.... the taxpayer has plenty to spare......

"Sestack stayed in the race and WON. So what's the big deal?
I thinks called the 24 hour news cycle. If there's no news to report, make it up."
Don't forget, when the media gets caught insinuating, implying or digging very hard to prove something to be the case and it's not, they generally punish the people who they were trying to embroil in a juicy scandal so they could sensationalize it and boost ad revenue.
Ad revenue is the new arbiter of truth in this country, which means perception and presumption matter more than facts and evidence as far as the "news" media is concerned.
Sestak a prior Navy Admiral and Congressional candidate made the accusation not the media, you can try and spin it off libtard but it along with the Oil slick are going to stick to the Obama Administration like tar!
Great, another plan for "emergency" funding paid for with money we don't have that will inflate the national debt.
What is it that the Obama administration doesn't understand about living within your means! How about they just print lots of money and give everyone $10,000 to be happy and vote Democrat in November.
Everything is an emergeny. What's the use of paygo when everything will be made an emergency.
I used to believe we needed to pay our teachers more since their job is so important to our future.
I am now convinced that we need to cancel union mandated benefits, increase their work load and make them responsible for actually teaching kids.
I work as a fundriaser for schools and the attitude I see from so many teachers is they will do the minimum to get out the door at the end of the day.
But to be fair- we must also have parents sign a contract listing their responsibility to thier children and to that child's education and make them stick to it. Too many parents treat school as a babysitting service and as a result, the teachers act like babysitters.
Money is not the answer
Of course Obama supports it. Heaven forbid we cut anywhere, and besides, he needs those union teachers to vote for every Democrat this November. Why not throw another $23 billion down the education rat hole, it's not his money.
This guy is lining his pockets with taxpayer dollars. 23,000,000,000 for summer school!?!?!?!? Families are starving, living in tent cities, all over the United States and this guy wants to steal tax payer money and use it on summer school? We employ more teachers than any other nation in the world. and our average test scores are near the worst in the world. We basically have a school system run by union bosses. what do you expect.
Instead of blowing billions on summer school, why don't we kill two birds with one stone. If you can't pass your classes, then it's off to Afghanistan with you.
No emergency education funding should be passed. It's not just an emergency, until the state's can refocus their spending the prevent education cuts. This emergency funding will become permanent or the state's will make education cuts in next years budget. Let States face their own crisis. We (the federal government) can't be everything to everyone. Get us out of two wars – then we'll talk. Marlene in Mich
This administration makes everything it wants to cram through an emergency........nothing but another payback to the unions
Sure, what the heck another 23 billion dollars wasted, why not. Teacher unions are such a scam, they hide behind kids to fatten their contracts and what is the result? Lower grades, more failing kids and what is the unions response? We need MORE money.
I am sick and tired of the mindless spending. Where is the focus on job creation? The President said awhile back that he gets it and he is focused, that lasted two days and his focus turned to health care.
I cannot wait for November, I voted for Obama and now I get a chance to correct that mistake. We will be bankrupt if we, the voters, do not put a halt to it.
