(CNN) - President Barack Obama used the growing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to renew his pitch for alternative energy Wednesday, arguing that the unfolding environmental disaster "gives you a sense of where we're going" without comprehensive reform.
The federal government is "going to bring every resource necessary to put a stop" to the spill, the president said during a visit to a solar panel manufacturing facility in Fremont, California. "We will not rest until this well is shut, the environment is repaired, and the cleanup is complete."
But, he added, "a lot of damage has been done already. The spill in the Gulf, which is just heartbreaking, only underscores the necessity" of seeking alternative fuel sources.

A failure to enact comprehensive energy reform, he argued, would pose a threat to national security and the economy, as well as the environment.
I bought a Camry Hybrid in 2007, and have spent so little on gasoline my savings account is growing big time.
Do your part, or pay your share for petroleum usage.
I got to hand it to Odumbo, he uses every trick of the tongue to cast a spell on his followers.
He makes it sound like we will have oil spills every where around us if we dont stop NOW, even tho he wants to make the wells safer so this doesnt happen again. So which is it odumbo, stop drilling and go green or make the wells safe so this doesnt happen again?
It all depends on who he is taking to, this guy is a as good of a BSer as they come.
Thank you President Obama, for your Concern and your Wisdom. Unfortunately, the RIGHT WING cannot understand the LOGIC of Alternative Energy!
Sometimes federal involvement (regulations) in a "free market" society are a good thing. When they are not applied or blatently ignored, bad things happen, ie Wall Street running amock, current recession, repeal of the Glass-Steigal Act, BP fiasco, etc.etc. --– All things in moderation--
Thank you Mr. President!
The Gulf Oil Leak graphically illustrates how only renewable, non-toxic, non-polluting energy sources are viable. If it is toxic, or pollutant throw it out! Nuclear Plants are just as catastrophic as the oil polluting beaches all over the world only their fallout lasts much, much, longer than the decades we will be cleaning up the oil in the gulf. Oil dependency is a myth, we don't need only oil to create energy, we have many less expensive, (to the planet and our pocket book,) alternatives that have not been pursued. And surely, if the infrastructure is not there to support it, (except Hoover is just languishing in the desert...,) why are no measures in place to create that infrastructure or are we just going to job it out to China?
It is more than time to take the responsibility of action Pres. Obama professes in this article. CNN wrote "A failure to enact comprehensive energy reform, he argued, would pose a threat to national security and the economy, as well as the environment." – Well hasn't that already happened or is the Gulf Oil Leak a figment of the collective imagination?
I don't understand how people can say the Administration isn't doing enough. The heads of the top oil companies are working on this. When they are asked for their opinion, they tell the US that they would do the same thing that BP is doing. The US Gov't isn't in the oil business. To expect them to know more about how to cap this than BP does is not logical. This should have been thought of back in the 2000s, when the well was actually being built. This is where small government gets you.
