CNN Poll: Americans slightly less pessimistic on economy

Washington (CNN) - The vast majority of Americans still say economic conditions in the country remain poor, but the public appears less pessimistic about the economy than they did earlier this year, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Thursday morning indicates that 78 percent say economic conditions today are somewhat or very poor, with 22 percent saying the economy's in good shape.

Thirty-seven percent of people questioned in the poll say economic conditions are currently very poor, but that number is down seven percentage points from February.

"There are some major regional differences," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "The number of people in the Northeast and Midwest who think the economy is in very poor shape has gone down by 10 to 12 points since February, compared to only a three-to-five point change in the South and West. Westerners remain most pessimistic about the state of the economy, with 46 percent saying that it is in very poor shape, compared to only 33 percent in the Northeast."

According to the survey, the economy remains issue number one with Americans, with 42 percent saying it's the most important issue facing the country, 25 points ahead of health care. But that 42 percent is down five points from January.

The survey's release comes as the federal government releases its revised reading on the first-quarter Gross Domestic Product. GDP is expected to have grown at a 3.3 percent annualized rate for the first three months of the year, versus the initially reported 3.2 percent rate.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted May 21-23, with 1,023 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

As long as democrats are in power we will never recover. Tax and spend your way out is a failure program no matter how many times democrats try it.

    Dear America,

Be optimistic about the economy now or wait for more signs. But please oh please do not forget which party put us in this mess to begin with.

Obama and the Democrats are the "Emergncy responders and tow truck drivers" the Republicans were driving when our economy spun out of control, hit the ditch, rolled over and started to catch fire.

Don't let them confuse you by compalining that we have to take a while to recover from what they caused.

apparently the hopeful ones aren't people with money in the US stock market, or any concept of what 13 TRILLION dollars of debt means in terms of fiscal health

This is a good sign, but there are so few people asked. It really has to make you wonder who these people are and why so few are being asked. Just this really represent the feelings all over the US?
