Clinton: Rich aren't paying fair share

Clinton waded into tax policy Thursday.
Clinton waded into tax policy Thursday.

(CNN) – Hillary Clinton struck a strong populist chord while wading into territory secretary of states rarely go Thursday: Domestic policy.

During a conference at the Brookings Institution on national security, the nation's top diplomat bluntly aired her own views on the nation's tax policies, saying she feels "the rich are not paying their fair share."

"The rich are not paying their fair share in any nation that is facing the kind of employment issues [like the U.S.] – whether it's individual, corporate or whatever the taxation forms are," Clinton said after clearly stipulating that these were her opinions, no those of the Obama administration.

Clinton went on to cite Brazil, long known for its high taxes, as a model of a successful economic policy.

"Brazil has the highest tax-to-GDP rate in the Western Hemisphere and guess what – they're growing like crazy," Clinton said. "And the rich are getting richer, but they're pulling people out of poverty."

"There is a certain formula there that used to work for us, until we abandoned it, to our regret in my opinion," she added.

well if Hillary feels that hte rick does not pay enought taxes then she and Billy boy should make up the difference. I think with her big mouth and his extra women on the side both should pay a extra 60% in taxes.
maybe this way she wouls shut up for a while.

Since she is so convinced of this, I wonder how large a voluntary contribution she made to lower the national debt. There is nothing preventing her from giving the government what she thinks her fair share should be.

Clinton grossly mistates Brazil's growth, typical of a politician. She would be better of to explain (and CNN would be better off to investigate) why she gave a pass to Russia for them to sell missles to Iran in her and Obama's recent agreement with Russia.

the rich in this country already pay 90% of the bill so what else does she want?
Here is a bright idea, if this Administration would stop passing these huge costly bills and laws then we would not be talking about 13 trillion dollars in debt.

    Clinton = progressive socialist

HILLARY IS RIGHT! In the 40s, 50s and 60s, we had a more equitable tax policy, and we had a booming economy. The big inequities started again with the Reagan administration, and were exacerbated by Bush.

Has she been to Brazil lately??? Take a look at the slums in San Paolo and the capital cities. The shanties and everything else throughout the country. The poor are everywhere. She has no idea what she is talking about as most in common with all the rest of the liberals who want socialism. Take a look at Socialist Europe and what is going on.......

Just take a look at Greece and what not paying a fair share of taxes has led them. While it may be sport to the wealthy to find the smallest tax obligation possible it doesn't lend to the general wellbeing of the economic health of the country. This goes to Corporate tax as well. Holding offshore accounts to reduce tax liability is simply criminal. Business and the wealthy are essentially trying to destroy the middle class by forcing government to create an unbalanced tax system. Business and the wealthy receive benefits from governments and should pay for them just as well as the middle and lower classes.

I sure the heck would love the Liberals to give a definition of "rich"

Clinton, you enter public service and leave as multimillionaires. So I guess you too are not paying enough?

    Shut Up!

Dems #1 baby.....class warfare.....I am so sick of this tired dribble from the left.

The "rich" need to pay more so Liberals can give it away to the lazy class or fund their social experiments that always fail.

Let me see if I get this straight – Hillary Clinton believes if we RAISE taxes in the U.S. then the economy is going to prosper and by "sharing the wealth" we may have the ability to become as great as (here it comes......) Brazil?? And this is the "Hope and Change" the uninformed voted for? There is not one textbook or economist that would say in our current economic environment that RAISING taxes and making the "rich" pay "their fair share" is going to make this country grow. Unbelievable how uninformed Clinton/Obama/etc. are and how they are damaging this country. If Clinton thinks Brazil is the "model" then she is welcome to roll her slightly larger than it should be butt down to Brazil and become a Brazilian. Then can spew her stupidity to others.

This is the dumbest statement that I have heard from apolitician in a long time. When 47% of the populous pays no income tax how can the idiot say that the rich are not paying their "fair share"?

Sorry Hillary but Brazil's tax rate run from 7.7 to 27.5 percent with a 2.75 percent surcharge for those making over 110,000 plus 9 percent for social services.
I guess Hillary doesn't pay taxes because our rate go up to 35 percent plus 12.4 percent for social services.
Another government employee who can't keep her foot out her mouth.
This country is in deep dodo with leaders like her.

Heres a novel idea Hillary – How about poor people pulling themselves out of poverty?? I understand helping out those that really want to succeed but I do not understand supporting the lazy folks that never really tried to better themselves and prefer living off the system! Why don't you be a great example to the rest of the country and give all of your's and Bill's money to the poor and watch them blow it and still be poor!!

S.O.S. Clinton hit the nail right on the head. The failed economic policies of the Bush Administration have proven to be catastrophic. You CAN'T give tax breaks to the rich and expect that the wealth will trickle down. It doesn't work that way. Just explain to me how you come into office with a surplus and leave office in an economic recession.

Ms. Clinton is absolutely correct. Keep in mind however, this is the same person whose husband recently asked all of us to pitch in to help pay off her debt from her failed 2008 election campaign. No doubt he made that request without her knowledge.

Who is Hillary really kidding here? The poor in the US are basically the same as Brazil's lower middle class. Our poor are soooo much better off than South America's "poor"!

Well, amen Sister Clinton! This ought to be in the news every day. The rich have not paid their fair share, or anything like their fair share in many years. That, along with excessive defense spending, including unnecessary wars, is the reason the deficit and national debt are so outrageous.

There is no doubt that the gap between rich and poor is horrendous and growing, and that path leads the U.S. to third world country status. Why some ordinary folks want to give the rich a pass is well beyond my understanding. Are they "star-struck"? The rich are not to be idolized. They are by-and-large a group of welfare cheats and criminals.

There is no group that is on welfare to the extent that the rich are on welfare, at great expense to the average American and detriment to the future of our country. Take the rich off welfare now!
