Washington (CNN) - Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen said Sunday that technical challenges require the oil industry, rather than the U.S. military, to lead the effort to stop the Gulf of Mexico oil leak.
"It really is not ours to lead right now, because of the technical challenges," Mullen said on the CNN program "State of the Union." Instead, the oil industry is leading the effort, Mullen said.
While the military has some deep-sea capability, such as deep-sea submersibles, officials have said the military has no unique technology to offer regarding offshore oil drilling. The military has undersea imagery
technology, but military officials said it would not add any capability to what the private industry is already using.
another cover up for Obama.
Big Oil knows how to make billions of dollars at 5,000 feet. They obviously don't know what to do when something goes wrong.
I hope the lawyers have a field day over this. Meanwhile no more new permits until they can demonstrate they can do it safely.
We're destroying this planet.
But But But But .........
BP, Haliburton, Cheney, Bush NEEDED those extra billions they got by-passing extra safety procedures.
That's pretty idiotic... Hard to believe our military has nothing more available to them than what the private sector is currently using... Why not???
They may not be the ones to stop the oil leak but they sure are the ones that need to do everything possible to clean up the oil and prevent it from reaching the coast. From what i've heard there were few boats in the water actually scouping up the mess.Beaches and marches were absent other than those surveying the damage.Just because a president claims they are doing everything possible doesn't mean it's true. They knew from day one what a disaster this would be if the oil got to those marshes or on the shore. The EPA gave them the ok to use dispersents that they knew were dangerous to the environment until some one realized what a mistake that was. Then, when asked or told by EPA to stop their use BP ignored them .Here it is some 40 plus days after the event and there aren't enough efforts being put forth to suck up the oil that pouring into the GULF. If the effort were truely there than we wouldn't be seeing plumes of oil floating around in the ocean.Come on people ,wake up !!!!
so now republicans want the fed.goverment in the oil buisness
GI JOE...this administration had 16 months to tighten safety regulations on deep sea drilling. don't you people understand that everytime you blame Bush for every problem that comes along it sends the message of uncertainty within the administration?
what would happen if the CEO of a company for 16 months went before his shareholders and said...we haven't been profitable the past year because of the guy before me. if you need someone to tell you the answer...well, then you must be a government worker!
NOW, I understand decompression, MILITARY,"Screw BP", take some explosive and slide it into the pipe low enough to collaspe the drill hole so "WE" can get onto Immigration!!! OK!!! USA is the way!!!
What really bothers me is that, to me, BP and the militray should be working together...not the military and/or other gov't agencies just sitting on the sidelines watching. There should be a full scale response to this from all sides. It is like the gov't is happy to sit and watch instead of rolling up the sleeves and jumping in...time to act, enough with the sideline commentary or finger pointing or just general lack of urgency from our gov't. This is worse than the response to Katrina...
Obama is the best and our last hope!! Bush, Cheney and their buddies in Oil corporations are destroying our country. . . .
The Military knows how to protect our country, fight wars on land and on sea, know how to do humanitariam efforts, they do not drill for, own or supervise oil drilling thus you develop no expertise nor have expertise in something you never train in or done. Dispite the loud noise from the right wing to bring in the military to do what? Just as they are doing know, keep the screws to BP and directly over see there efforts with goverment employees who are familiar with the process and as shown so far none of whom are exactly an expert in this type of oil spill , so all of the alarmist need to come up with their expert solution or stop the noise and offer our prayers to those people whose livelhood is seriously affected by this catastrophe which we are learning daily was fuel by shot cuts, greed, profits and blind eyes by the enforcers.
You expect President Obama (in just 16 months) to clean up ALL.
2 wars, financial deregulation, oil deregulation (what other deregulation went on that we haven't even heard of yet?).
Kinda hard to clean decades of uncleaned stuff off to see what's underneath.
And you want the deregulating republicans back in control to deregulate even more for corporate donations?
Obama's fault? What a crock ...just imagine the fits and convulsions of the GOP if Obama had pushed for more government regulation and oversight of offshore drilling... it wasn't that long ago people.. drill here drill now? Drill Baby Drill? The GOP is trying to milk this for naked political gain and equate it to Bush and Katrina. As horrible as this is, there are not thousands of people under water ignored and dying in the streets. This is new territory... we had plenty of warning and experience with killer hurricanes.
All of the small government conservatives now want the government to take over and bailout the BP oil spill. BP caused this mess – why should the government (that is the American taxpayers) have to take over and clean up? The industry has the technology to drill out there; if they can't prepare for disasters like this then they shouldn't be drilling there altogether. No more deep sea drilling until we can be assured of adequate responses to disasters like this. This is BPs problem.
