(CNN) - Former Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, have sent an e-mail to family friends announcing a mutual decision to separate, a longtime family friend told CNN.

"We are announcing today that after a great deal of thought and discussion, we have decided to separate," the message said. "This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further."

Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider confirmed the authenticity of the e-mail but declined to comment further.

The couple, married for 40 years, has four grown children and three grandchildren.

Al and Tipper Gore's dramatic kiss on the podium of the Democratic National Convention in 2000 was credited for giving him a more human image in his presidential run.

"The sheer carnality of the kiss - the-can't-wait-to-get-back-to-the-hotel-room urgency, the sexual electricity flowing south - was riveting," Time magazine's Lance Morrow wrote at the time.

CNN Senior Political Analyst Gloria Borger described the kiss as "one of the most memorable moments of the campaign."

"For those of us who have watched political couples over the years this is sad," Borger said. "They are a genuine couple."

Since losing the 2000 presidential race, the former vice president has been active in environmental causes, but he has also pursued business interests.

He co-founded Generation Investment Management, a company that promotes "a new approach to sustainable investing." Gore is also the chairman of Current TV, a cable and satellite television network he co-founded. He also serves as a director for Google and Apple Computer.

His best-selling book about global warming - "An Inconvenient Truth" - was the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary film.

After leaving Washington and returning to Nashville, Tennessee, Tipper Gore considered but decided against a run for a U.S. Senate seat in her home state in 2002.

I'm no Al Gore fan.... this is sad, nobody could derive any pleasure from this announcement, well except Tipper.

I knew it was over years ago when he grew that silly beard and gained weight. Now he can sulk in the big carbon footprint mansion alone. Al, break out of your slump, unlock the lockbox and go out and do something fun!

Obviously, the DECLINING global temperatures for the last 10 years chilled this relationship to the point of no return... Good luck Tipper! You deserve better than this loser.

I just hope that Tipper Gore finds someone she can be with that will respect her and provide the support she needs. Al Gore is, and always has been, a big STIFF! His focus never left that loss to President Bush, even though after the Florida fiasco it was confirmed that he was beaten fair and square. Since then what has he done? Sounds like all the global warming talk he's been spewing has been even warmer around his own globe. Tipper is too nice a person and too good looking to hang around waiting for this worm to slither home and not pay attention to her any more.

Tipper: "You know, Al.....after a lot of research, thought, and soul searching, I'm starting to believe that man-made global warming is utter hogwash!"

Al: (hurt expression on face) "I just don't know you anymore! Who ARE YOU?????"

Whether you like his politics or not, can't you people just lay off the sarcasm or mean-spirited comments. Ending a relationship after 40 years is a difficult process. Please show your humanity and respect them whether you like their politics or not.

Now that Al Gore has made millions off of his fake man-made global warming he has more time and money to play the field.

Gross, can you imagine that fat guy on the prowl.

Tree hugging women run, Al Gore has been lusting after you for years and wants to cash in on his green fame with the ultimate pay day.

Why bother getting married. I am so discourage, and dishearten. Please Lord come for your world- whatever is left of it. Why can't people fight for their marriages. It is not greener on the other side of the grass- work with what and on what you got.....

That is sad. The Gore's have presented a wonderful warm image over the years and his care and concern for the environement is unprescented. I wish them both well in whatever the future holds for each of them.

This is "sad?" Who gives a you-know-what? They're not you or your parents. It's not your problem, it's not your marriage. Who cares. There are far more important things to worry about than whether or not Al & Tipper Gore are staying married.

Good for her. She prolly got tired of his fanatical lying about the sky falling. Who could listen to that childish crap 24/7?

Global warming is a Leftist lie. This is a proven scientific fact. The debate is now over. Good thing this Leftist scam was caught before it cost us more liberty and treasure.
Any who continue to press this lie and the expensive "corrective" schemes should be arrested and charged with fraud.
It is not enough to just debunk their lies and marginalize the perpetrators of this fraud, there needs to be a steep criminal price to pay so the Libs never try something like this again. Incarceration and fines along the lines of what their “fixes” would have cost us should do it…

Note to CNN: I don't think it's correct or fair to write that VP Gore "lost" his own bid for president in 2000. He could as easily be said to have won the actual vote. and to have conceded the court challenge to spare the country the continued debacle. I hope the Gores are afforded the privacy to work this out, and wish they could have simply done that without feeling like they had to get ahead of this news by announcing it in this way. It is sad so many of the comments below are so mean.

I am sorry to hear this, read one of Tippers books and in it she said she gets depression and was on medication, hope they can overcome their difficulties as when all is said and done think they both are genuine and good people trying to do their best while living in a glass bowl, I always will respect both of them – it must be a sad time for them and their families.
