(CNN) - Former Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, have sent an e-mail to family friends announcing a mutual decision to separate, a longtime family friend told CNN.

"We are announcing today that after a great deal of thought and discussion, we have decided to separate," the message said. "This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further."

Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider confirmed the authenticity of the e-mail but declined to comment further.

The couple, married for 40 years, has four grown children and three grandchildren.

Al and Tipper Gore's dramatic kiss on the podium of the Democratic National Convention in 2000 was credited for giving him a more human image in his presidential run.

"The sheer carnality of the kiss - the-can't-wait-to-get-back-to-the-hotel-room urgency, the sexual electricity flowing south - was riveting," Time magazine's Lance Morrow wrote at the time.

CNN Senior Political Analyst Gloria Borger described the kiss as "one of the most memorable moments of the campaign."

"For those of us who have watched political couples over the years this is sad," Borger said. "They are a genuine couple."

Since losing the 2000 presidential race, the former vice president has been active in environmental causes, but he has also pursued business interests.

He co-founded Generation Investment Management, a company that promotes "a new approach to sustainable investing." Gore is also the chairman of Current TV, a cable and satellite television network he co-founded. He also serves as a director for Google and Apple Computer.

His best-selling book about global warming - "An Inconvenient Truth" - was the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary film.

After leaving Washington and returning to Nashville, Tennessee, Tipper Gore considered but decided against a run for a U.S. Senate seat in her home state in 2002.

Why divorce after 40 years? The end is the time to be grateful and make amends. It's idiocy to think you are going to start a long term dynamic , romantic life with someone else at that point in the journey. ..and virtually all divorce is the result of one party or both wanting someone else.

That is sad.. 40 years is a life time, and I am sure they have good reasons to seperate now. I hope they both find happiness ! In today's disposable society, it is rare to find a couple who actually chose to stay together for more than a few years.

'I know most are too young to remember Tipper Gore's pursuit against Heavy Metal during the late 70's early 80's.... You know, it went something like, if you listen to Black Sabbath records backwards she reportedly said the words said something like I love Satan....therefore liberal logic, ban all heavy metal music'

They said nothing of the sort. They said the lyrics were graphic enough that parental advisory labels should be put on them.
And you might want to consider the liberal logic comment seeing as she formed the organization with the wifes of a couple of repubs as well.

It is truely sad to see ANYONE go through this after being married for 40 years. However this is truely a personal/family matter. is it truel worthy of "Beaking" National News. Good Going CNN! If he was still in office I could understand but this coverage is a cheesy grab for ratings. I didn't even like Al's policies, but giv him and his family some dignity.

this is a personnel matter and I give them a lot of respect that they
did this in a civil way by respecting each other and doing the way
it should be done not by getting caught cheating and lying

40 years is a long time and one would think most everything was dealt with. Oh well, best to them.

This event would make Tipper one of the most
sought after divorced women in America.
But as for ole' Alford, well I think they have dating
    services in Tennessee .

Lots of people stay maried, Penny. I've been married 37 years to a great guy and my best friend, and lemme tell ya keeping a marriage rooted and strong is quite a lot of work-work that your generation doesn't seem to want any part of. I have plans to stick with the vow "til death do us part."

I feel very sorry for the Gores.

Things change in a marriage all of the time. The split is a surprise, but they have decided what is best for both of them.
The middle income family who divorce have issues just like those who are rich.
The big difference is that the Gore's have megga money and can do what they please after the divorce.
This is not the case for the "working Joe" when a divorce is decided upon.
People with money don't have to worry about living the life they are accustomed to after divorcing.
Money makes up for all kinds of marital problems, even a divorce.

This is sad. I would have never thought that after all of these years they would divorce. I know people have problems, it seems that couples do not stay together anymore. I am blessed to have parents that have stayed together for over 50 years no matter how hard it may have gotten for them. I pray for them and their children.

I know we should be gracious, but I'm one of those "extra chromosome" people Al talks about. You know, the ones who don't buy into his pseudo-science lies. Well done, Tipper, sorry you took 40 years to figure out what most peopple can pick up in two minutes.
