White House sends BP a $69 million bill

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - The Obama administration has sent a $69 million bill to BP for the U.S. government's efforts to help deal with the energy company's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The current $69 million bill accounts for 75% of what BP owes to date, and the company has until July 1 to pay the full amount, an administration official said Thursday.

The Obama administration will bill BP regularly for costs related to the spill, according to the Deepwater Horizon Unified Command, which is the government and industry task force managing the spill response.

"As a responsible party, BP is financially responsible for all costs associated with the response to the spill," the task force said.

The bill was also sent to Transocean, Andarko, Moex Offshore and QBE Underwriting, a copy of the bill obtained by CNN showed.

Included in the bill sent to BP was a $29 million charge for Federal agencies to operate ships, aircraft and boats to monitor environmental damage and another $29 million charge for the activation and deployment of the National Guard, an administration official said.

Are all you conservatives as really as stupid as you sound?

If you actually paid attention to the issues and the truth, you would understand that this is the FIRST payment from BP to pay for initial cleanup equipment/staff/supplies.

There is a whole separate unit that is handling the current claims to pay fishermen and businessmen what they would normally be making if the spill had not happened.

If you going to open your mouth – know the facts- and they don't come from the lying fools at Fox. This is actually a Republican-caused disaster because, just like the banks, they let the oil companies run wild and Dick Cheney was up in the corruption at MMS to his neck. It's is Dick Cheney's company. Halliburton, who is also a named legal defendant in this mess.

BP is the primary destroyer so they are being held responsible now. The Justice Dept is already preparing legal charges against all the companies and people involved.

President Obama is handling this very well. Yelling and screaming solves nothing. You need resources, clean up coordinated, and people taken care of. The more you rant, the less real work gets done. We are ALL angry but we have to do what is needed first and then next and then next.

BP should have ALL their rigs shut down in American waters until they can all be inspected for proper safety gear that the Bush/Cheney oilmen let them leave off. Every other country in the world requires certain safety equipment – but not the Republicans to protect the U.S.

This is just one more Republican disaster that President Obama is having to clean up and he is once again doing a logical, methodical, fair approach to make sure all the needs are being met as soon as possible.

If you uninformed nutjob conservatives want to blame someone, take a good look at your oilmen Bush and Cheney. They are criminals on so many levels they should spend the rest of their lives in prison with a little waterboarding thrown in – then maybe they would admit all their lies about Iraq, their stomping on the Constitution with illegal "executive orders", closed meetings with oil executives, and on and on.

It's time to throw out all Republicans from offiice. They have destroyed this country and are a bunch of do-nothing, no solutions liars caught daily in corruption and adultery scandals.

Awesome! Great job! BP needed to pay as you go instead of the Federal Govt picking up the tab for BIG OIL incompetency.

The cost is a small part of this issue. Devastating damage will be done. The most important issue going forward for the government is how do we make sure that the oversight on operations that can cause this kind of devastation is effective? And I'm not just talking about the energy industry, but transportation, manufacturing, medical and other industries and activities where in certain instances fail-safe is not something we have any room to compromise on. This is a wake-up call on the things we expect are being done safely.

Some of these comments is why our country is so screwed up! Half the people on here couldn't make a smart decision if it was a multiple choice test with an a or b answer! You never solve problems when your motives are politically motivated to make any decision made, look bad! The most sensible person so far in this, Charlie Crist! He's the only person who is winning by being neutral! Calling the President out when he's wrong and supporting him when he's right. I'm a democrat and know Kendrick Meek. But if Charlie Crist were to win the Senate seat in Florida, it will be the best thing for politics everywhere! There should be no shame in doing what's right! Conservative, Liberal, left, right, that's why our country is so screwed up!

This BP disaster is the "2nd Katrina" for George Bush. He and Cheney allowed a lax energy policy. Couple that with cozy ties to the oil companies & VOILA, you have an accident waiting to happen!

Send the bill to the "No-Accountability" twins-Bush and Cheney.

By the way, where is Cheney these days?? He sure is very quiet.

Jim in El Paso....WE THE PEOPLE are billing THE corporation that has created this catastophe. WE THE PEOPLE should seize ALL assets of BP right now before they are worthless and BP declares BK. Or I suppose you would just like US to pay for it so you can whine and cry about higher taxes and point the finger at Obama. Now, get off of the internt and do your finger painting homework.

Once again, it is never enough for the Obama haters. The bill is
not the bottom line, they will be "billed regularly". Where was your
anger at Cheney's secret meetings with oil executives, or when
Halliburton received billions in no-bid contracts, or when the
Republicans deregulated the oil industry, or when the Pubs said NO
again to uncapping the limits on liability to those hurt by oil spills, etc.
Silence reigned then, and now that the price is being paid for their
ineptness, you refuse to acknowledge the responsibility of the
past administration, and want to lay blame elsewhere. Well, that
"old dog don't hunt". Your arguments are just as shallow as those
    you defend.

Hate, Hate, Hate...How can you people actually sleep at night or function during the day. Which so much hate in your heart and anger in your heart, I feel sorry for the people who have to be around you guys 24 hours a day.

I am so glad the President is not showing anger, but cooliness because that is what a true leaders does in a time of crisis.

  13. Steve (the real one)

To all the name callers (both left and right). Just debate the issues! Leave the name calling at home! Any Palin story and the usual lefty suspects come crawling out the wood work. Any Obama story, the same hapens but on the right! The left wants everyone to stop calling President a socialist yet have NO problem calling Bush or Palin idiots! Just debate already! When you name call you might as well wave a white flag! You already lost the debate! Stay passionate, just debate!

BP should demand an accounting of what the government spent $69 million doing? My guess is that this is just another Obama publicity stunt.

sending a bill implies that one expects the reciever will remit the payment. we all know that BP will fight this bill as vigorously as they can, and in the end, even if they pay it may be dozens of years from now and the actual amount received will not be enough. if there was ever a time when the government should simply just go ahead and sieze the assests of a company or entity, this is it.

on the other hand, there should also be a thorough investigation and accounting of the culpability of the government. this disaster didn't just happen and the present adiministration shares the blame. they cannot simply heap all the fault on BP or make the excuse that the policiies that led to this situation began with the previous administration.

at the end of the day both BP and the government need to be held accountable and responsible.

Good start! Unfortunately, no amount of money is ever going to clean up the mess BP caused.
Rachel Maddow's show last night scared me more than anything else we have seen in the last 40+ days and we have seen ugly.
The wetlands on the shore of LA protect New Orleans and various other cities from storm surges. No wetlands those cities will become ghost towns. It was an extremely interesting show.
CNN-can you hear me? Maddow is worth listening and watching. Unlike that imbecile from AK that you continue to shove down our throats.
You probably won't print this because it's not your station and you are in love with drill baby drill!!

Yes BP should just send the bill to Sarah Palin , Rush Limbaugh , Faux News and their neo-Confederate fans.
