Washington (CNN) - Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan took a pragmatic approach to the issue of late-term abortion when working as a top lawyer in the Clinton White House, documents released Friday show.
The material was part of more than 46,000 pages released by the William J. Clinton Presidential Library. Kagan was a top lawyer in the administration's Office of Domestic Policy.
At issue at the time was a bill in the Republican-controlled Congress that would ban a type of abortion performed in the second trimester. Critics of the procedure called it "partial-birth" abortion.
In a February 27, 1997 memo to top White House staff, Kagan notes a leading abortion rights supporter had just admitted late-term abortions were being "performed more frequently than pro-choice groups have acknowledged, and often perfonned [sic - performed] on healthy women with healthy fetuses," repeating a claim conservatives at the time had long made.

A lack of grace and respect? That describes Boehner, "you lie" Wilson and the whole republican party.
OH NOES!!! One less thing for the conservatives to throw feces at? Whatever shall they do?
another disaster for the Supreme Court brought on by far left Obama & company.
Shedding light on a leftist is never a good thing.
It's taken quite awhile for the Clinton library to bring forward her documents.
Must have had to take out the light bulb.
Why is it every time is see Kagan's face I think of Lou Costello? In a country with an overabundance of attorney's, she's the only one Obmama can think of? Must be a reason.
Sorry, but she has no judicial experience, she's never been in charge of decision making, it's always easier when someone else is the boss.
Judging from the photo, it would be most gratefully appreciated if Ms. Kagan received even "less light".

Remembering that it was Republican polices and actions that crashed the economy and caused the loss of millions of jobs, jobs that may never return, Republican deregulation and privitization of our important industries, that caused the financial crash and the oil disaster. We really want to hear more about how these same old Republican ideas will somehow majically fix things. Thank God we have President Obama. I only need to see President Bush talking to realized how lucky we are that the rebpublicans are not still in power.

Please enlighten us all as to what those Republican policies were that crashed the economy. The root problem is Fannie and Freddie and the Fed remains to do nothing to correct the cancer. You need to go drink some more kool-aide and enjoy a peanut butter and petroleum jelly sandwich...and learn how spell.
playing baeball while wearing a watch.
really!
Kagan is an abortionists dream choice. For the rest of America, she is completely unqualifed.
Show the public thdse papers does she stijl hate the military
Most people who write about leftists don't even know what they are talking about. Really most everyone in the governement are hard working underpaid for all the hours they work. I cannot imagine most people ever working as hard as member of congress or their staff. I lived in Washington for over 40 years and they work hard. It is the greatest government in the greatest country in the history of the world and respect it.
I defer comment to Justice Kagan to be. God's speed be with you.

Sorry, but she has no judicial experience, she's never been in charge of decision making, it's always easier when someone else is the boss.
..............................................
Forty Supreme Court justices have come to the court without any prior judicial experience, half of them serving during the 20th century. They've included some of the court's most distinguished alumni
Next bogus argument?
Enough already. The teabagger and fox celebrities will trash anybody who doesn't follow their lies and deception to undermine America. So bring on the bigoted ignorance and arrogance – just get on with it so the rest of us can move forward with Kagan's being seated. Leave the knuckle draggers (GOP) behind to sink in their shallow gene pool.
Every time I see Kagan, Aerosmith's "Dude Looks Like A Lady" starts playing in my head.
It was the repulican party that got us into this mess by given tax breaks to the rich and deregulating everything so that we wouldn,t have tougher rules on business breaking the law. the republican has always looked out for the rich and privilaged
Moron – softball while wearing a watch, its called softball for a reason. The other moron – abortion is legal, we know you want more activists like Scalia and that's why Kagan is such a good choice.
The next moron – discrimination because someone is different than you is un-American. The sexist moron – I'd bet you don't get many dates .... without paying for them. The light-bulb moron – I guess you don't live in a glass house with Dubya stickers all over it? She might be center, maybe even center left – but far left? Oh my bad, that's right in the current GOP trend of denying science if you understand evolution you're far left.
She is definitely not heterosexual.
I believe in a womans right of choice!
Even before she is born
