Arizona Democrats say immigration law energizes Latinos

Los Angeles (CNN) - The executive director of Arizona's Democratic Party says passage of the state's immigration law is energizing Latinos to become politically active and register to vote with his party.

"We are seeing voter registration increase with higher numbers and swinging our way," said Louis Heredia, executive director of the Arizona Democratic Party. "The sense is that (Latinos) are now focused on the need to participate."

Heredia says the number of registered Democratic voters has jumped from about 100 a week to 500 a week during May, as party officials actively pursued residents at events protesting the immigration legislation that was signed into law by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer in April.

"I am not terribly concerned about a backlash," said state Republican Party Communications Director Matthew Roberts. "A lot of Hispanic and Latino groups are contacting our office telling us that they are hearing from people satisfied with the immigration reform."

Updated registration tallies will be released by Arizona's Secretary of State next month, however, registration forms do not ask for an individual's race or ethnicity.

  1. Save America, impeach the treasonous republicans

Racial profiling should energize everyone to throw the Arizona republican wingnuts out of office.

No doubt this is what democrats are always thinking about; votes from illegals. That's why the ones like this from both parties need to be voted out in Nov.

That's why 70% of Arizonans approve the bill, including many legal hispanic residents.

But the article is right, illegal residents love the democratic party. I wonder why?

The illegals are not legal to vote, but the Dems will try to find a way for them. Everything is legal today.

You guys crack me up with your racial profilling scare tactics. So here is a question that none of you Liberals can answer.

What would you do to stop the problem of illegal immigration. Sorry, Comprehensive Immigration Reform as a talking point won't cut it.

    It's simple
Short of SB1070 what would you do?
Define Comprehensive Immigration Reform in the words of Obama?

All the Arizona law does is enforce a pre-existing law. If you are here illegally then go back. Why is that racial profiling? I don't get it.

I hope it does move Latinos to participate in our voting and elections. They are now the largest minority and the Democratic Party is the one who works for the People. Republicans are racists who work for large corporations and could care less what happens to working families.

We do need a solid Federal immigration law that is fair in fining illegals and yet providing a path to citizenship. We need to go after employers who hire illegals and pay them slave wages. We need the true tax base of legal workers to help close our deficit and to support local services illegals are using – schools, welfare, etc.

Latinos should trust the Democratic Party to work for their behalf. Democrats are the Party of the People and have done everything to pass legislation all year that is 100% people-focused. They have finally stopped the abuses of us by banks, credit card companies, insurance companies, and soon dirty energy companies. What did Republicans do – fight us all the way to protect the status quo for the abusive corporations. Republicans are traitors to the People and we need to get these hypocrite do-nothings out of our Congress.

ib: Guess what? Not everyone with brown skin in our country is an illegal, but thanks to the Crazy Republicans in AZ, they are now all treated like illegals. And by the way, The Dems accept anyone who is legal to vote in our elections, unlike the Republicans who only want white, christian, men in their party.

I am still in awe of all the idiots that do not believe in the LAW!! Hoorah for Arizona for doing something to combat the illegals. The dirty trail of trash they leave on our beautiful desert floor is deplorable. What illegal alien is going to clean it up? What a joke. I'm sick of these people coming across the borders illegally then we have to support most of them with our taxes while they send the money they make back to Mexico!

That's what's called a paradoxical effect, folks. Enjoy it GOPercons. I guarantee you it's not just the immigration law they passed either. That's only part of it. It's the behavior of the state school superintendent in persecuting Latino teachers and students and a whole host of other measures they've taken that haven't received as much press as the hot-button immigration actions they've taken.

At least we know what they really mean when they say "take OUR country back." How you liking those statistics and studies showing that whites will no longer be the majority, but merely part of a plurality, in a couple decades, GOPers? Rankles, eh? Guess you're regretting all that "southern strategy" now, huh?

Not in the slightest. You, however, are saying that you believe that all latinos are illegals. Have fun defending that one.

"All the Arizona law does is enforce a pre-existing law."

GOPers/conservatives should really smarten up and stop revealing their ignorance of the Constitution and its case precedent. Even assuming the above statement is true, which technically it is not, the admission that there is a pre-existing federal law on the issue 95% makes the argument that the AZ law is preempted. Seriously guys, the "say anything strategy" isn't working.

Uhh, we have answered that. Hold the businesses that hire them more accountable and enforce steep fines and other consequences for violations.

If you want to reduce the supply of anything you need to reduce the demand. They wouldn't be coming here in the first place if they weren't being hired.

If you are here legal, your vote counts and you went through the necessary steps to become so.

If you are illegal, you vote DOES NOT count.

What people aren't recognizing is that US citizen Hispanics are not fighting for the rights of illegals immigrants but for their own constitutional right to go about their daily lives without fear of being targeted by SB 1070 simply for being a brown Arizonan. "Brown" is the native color of the region, not white. Truly, if Arizona is so concerned about Hispanics in the area then let's give AZ, NM, CA, TX and a few other states from the Gadsden purchase back to the country the US bought the land from – Mexico. Congratulations Scottsdale! You are now all Mexicans.

Plenty of us realize that. GOPercons don't WANT people to recognize it. The Constitution only matters to them when it's convenient.

It is time to end bigotry and prejudice against a minority that is part of this society.
The Latino community will have its our voice heard loud and clear! The GOP will have to listen if they even consider having our support in the future.
We must stop those who disregard the principle of a nation of immigrants, a great land founded by immigrants. If we think about it only the natives can claim ownership of this land and no one else. If the GOP continues to play politics with our people we will be ready to stand up for them in the polls.

Get the Latinos and the Democratic Party out of Arizona. I'm tired of all the regulations and rules in our state. We need to get back to the "good old days" when the white cowboys were running things and the cattle barons controled the state. We showed those native americans who was boss and we will show the Latinos who controls Arizona. Bring back the wild west.
