McCain launches ads casting Hayworth as Washington insider

(CNN) – Arizona Sen. John McCain launched two ads Tuesday that seek to shine a spotlight on his opponent's past work as a lobbyist.

McCain is locked in a re-election battle with former Arizona Rep. J.D. Hayworth. The two ads - one for television and one for radio - paint Hayworth as a Washington insider that was voted out of office in 2006 because of his ties to lobbyists.

"Hayworth was paid thousands by a Florida corporation to lobby the very committee he used to serve on," the television narrator says. "Outsider? A lobbyist is as inside Washington as it gets."

Brian Rogers, McCain's campaign communications director, took the message a step further by tying Hayworth to disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

"It is stunning that Congressman Hayworth would register as a Washington lobbyist after Arizonans voted him out of office in part because of his close ties to another lobbyist – convicted felon Jack Abramoff, who is currently serving time in federal prison," Rogers said in a statement. Abramoff was transferred Tuesday from prison to a Maryland halfway house to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Both ads will run statewide "for the next couple weeks," according to Rogers. Arizona's primary will be held on August 24.

Read the TV and radio scripts after the jump:

Television ad script:

SEN. McCAIN: “I’m John McCain and I approve this message.”
VOICEOVER: “J.D. Hayworth says he’s an outsider. But after he was voted out of Congress he became a registered lobbyist. Hayworth was paid thousands by a Florida corporation to lobby the very committee he used to serve on. Outsider? A lobbyist is as inside Washington as it gets.”
ARIZONA VOTER: “Hayworth was my congressman, but we voted him out.”

Radio ad script:

MALE VOICEOVER: “J.D. Hayworth says he’s an outsider. Hmmm. Well, he was an insider as a member of Congress. Then, his big spending ways and taint of a lobbying scandal became too much for Arizonans. We voted Hayworth out of office. So what does Hayworth do? Remarkably, he decides to become a lobbyist himself.”
FEMALE VOICEOVER: “J.D. Hayworth was paid thousands of dollars by a Florida corporation to lobby the very committee he used to serve on. He became what he’d denounced, not for any Arizona interests, only for his own. So, when Hayworth says he’s an outsider, he’s not. He became a registered, professional lobbyist. And, that’s as inside Washington as you can get.”
MALE VOICEOVER: “Vote John McCain. Character matters.”
SEN. McCAIN: “I’m John McCain and I approve this message. Paid for by Friends of John McCain.”

Connect McSongbird with the Keating 5 that started bank de-regulation. That should cancel one of the ads. And link McSongbird to one of the politicians bought and paid for by the lobbyists.

McCain needs to follow Helen Thomas. His time has passed. He's senile or demented.

Does John McCain make anyone else feel as nauseous as he makes me every time I see his wrinkled old head? I just feel like vomiting every time he speaks.

Senator McCain has some things in his background which are not too terrific. What goes around comes around.

It would be good if both men were defeated. They have a hard time being civil and entering into meaningful debate.

If McCain is trying to paint someone else as a Washington insider, what would that make him? Sadly hypocritical.

More dishonesty from the McCain campaign. Hayworth registered as a lobbyist in 2008 to help ONE client with ONE item. That was all, ever. McCain registered as a lobbyist back in 1976 when he was a lobbyist for the Navy! McCain apparently needs to shade the truth in order to win reelection. Sad. Support JD Hayworth instead – contribute now at jdforsenate.com and let's help boot a career politician who has drifted to the left out of office.

Good lord, this is like calling the kettle black. If McCain's not a Washington insider after all these years in office, then none of them are.

I'd vote for a skunk before I'd vote for McCain again. He can't be forgiven or respected for bringing that ditz, Palin, on to his ticket. Such poor judgment renders him incapable of solid decision making. You lose, John.

Sensible people don't trust Hayworth, labeling him nothing more than a “media personality.” Hayworth is known to be "an avid earmarker" with links to Jack Abramoff… and then there is off stated opinion that gay marriage means you can legally marry your horse … People in AZ are truly between a rock & a hard place …

    Senator McCain,

Please, why don't you go in peace. What's with this nonsense of a campaign your people are running? You don't need this, we don't need to see you like this. I'm sorry to have to say something so cruel-sounding, but the best thing would be if you dislocated your hip-anything to give you an easy out. That would save the Party, the State, and the Nation a lot of humiliation. Honestly, you heed to go now.

I am NO mccain fan, less so because of the palin joke, but I CERTAINLY respect him alot more than hayworthless! i worked HARD to get Mitchell in and was even lucky enough to meet President Clinton and Mitchell while working on that campaign. As useless as mccain is, he is FAR less dangerous than hayworthless. And yes i DO know what I am talking about! A majority of Americans are ready to STOP off shore drilling and get to another viable solution for energy. its the IGNORANT uneducated right that believe they understand things, which they DO not, and do not CARE about!

John "character suddenly matters" McCain should be put out to pasture. It would be funny as hell to see this nimrod be the one to do it. If this is the best the right has to offer, we here in Arizona may finally get to go blue.

The republican choices are a a career politician that doesn't remember what he stands for today or a radio bloviator that already lost his seat in the house because he's as dirty as the day is long.

John McCains legacy = flip flops & Sarah Palin
JD Windbags legacy = kickbacks & Jack Abramoff.

Ok, if I lived in Arizona I would certainly vote for J.D. Hayworth and not for liberal Sen. McCain (R)
