Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) – Despite pressure from national Republicans, Gresham Barrett vowed Wednesday to remain in the runoff race against Nikki Haley for South Carolina's GOP gubernatorial nomination.
"We are in it for the long haul," Barrett told reporters at his campaign headquarters when asked if would drop out of the race.
Barrett made good on that promise Wednesday by releasing the first television ad of the runoff race – a follow-up to the well-received "Drill Sergeant" commercial that helped drive up Barrett's poll numbers in the final weeks of the race.
In the 30-second spot, titled "Shake Up Columbia," a drill sergeant walks alongside Barrett asking him a series of questions about how he plans to do business in the state capital if elected.
"Will you shake up Columbia?," the drill sergeant asks.
"Absolutely," Barrett responds.
The drill sergeant calls Barrett a "Christian family man who won't embarrass us" – a reference to the state's scandal-tainted governor, Mark Sanford.
Haley has the backing of Sanford's political allies and donors, and Barrett suggested earlier in the day that he will make an issue out of Haley's ties to the governor by describing her as "the Sanford candidate" in his remarks to reporters.
Barrett's campaign told CNN the ad will run in every television market in the state.
Why dont you just stop spending money and lets get on with the election. You lost but you don't see to be able to admit it.
nikki has the backing of the disgraced present governor of SC's people and the quitter from AK. That pretty much says it all about nikki and her affairs and the people who stand behind her.
Her husband looked like he wanted the ground to open up and swallow him last night. She finally did remember to bring him to the forefront. It looked like an after though.
WOW!! I hope someone smacks this "drill sergeant" for this. Military members are prohibited by regulations from supporting any political candidate while in uniform. You may attend rallies, etc in your civies. But you may NOT give the appearance that the military supports one particular candidate. Someone needs an LOR at the least!!!!
SC is one twisted state when it comes to values and racism. Can you imagine that a woman who has regular adulterous affairs got the most votes???
Of course their last governor, Sanford, shamelessly had affairs, used state money on his Argentina mistress and still kept his job.
State senator calls President Obama and the adultery candidate "ragheads" and then pretends it was a joke.
Rep Joe, "you lie" Wilson is head of a racist confederate group in SC, Senator Jim DeMint is a blatant racist and is one of the traitor Republicans who has called for America to fail. Senator Lindsey Graham is not much better.
Good God SC – so you really want to be on the same level as Mississippi in their ignorance. Get rid of these slimeballs!
Amazing how the GOP candidates are completely clueless about how to run a state government. No wonder SC is the dumbest state in the union. Where does the money go? Argentina? Utah? Idiotic commercials with a drill sargeant?
This state does so little with so much money. All of these Republican candidates are embarassing in so many ways. Kinda like SC I guess.
Haven't the people of SC been embarrassed enough by the redneck republicans they have elected in the past? You people must have hard heads. Why don't you at LEAST give the democrats a CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The reason is that we have seen what a mess the liberal dmeocrats have made in washington this year with their stupid ideas.
Has anyone checked to see if Nikki had an affair with Mark Sanford?? I mean he was her mentor! What all did he "mentor" her about? And, by the way, wasn't it South Carolina that was so for posting the 10 Commandments at the State Capitol? Are they posted? Or did Mark take them down? South Carolina is just full of LOSERS!!
I wonder if "Darling Nikki" will be her campaign song?? It would certainly fit! You know Nikki likes to GRIND!!!
I'm not a Republican but it's wrong to state that Nikki Haley has had extramarital affairs when there has been no evidence to prove it. The good old boys who run South Carolina politics don't want a female governor. It's highly likely that they're the ones behind the accusations.
Haley found her soul mate too...at least she didn't make up some stupid excuse about taking a hike for 7 days without even telling anyone.
Yep, South Carolina is so racist that the Republican voters, who are mostly white, chose an Indian-American woman over the other white male candidates. Hmm...
It is so inappropriate to use members of the military in a political ad. As a soldier, you're barred from campaigning in uniform, so why is a soldier being used as a vessel to promote a partisan political viewpoint?
Most of the time, I am embarrassed to be from South Carolina.
I am baffled by the number of votes that Nikki Haley received. In my opinion, nobody liked any of the other candidates.
I am a Democrat and hope that the democratic candidate for governor, Vincent A. Sheheen can win the uphill battle and be our next governor. He is certainly more qualified.
If the legislators in SC and Governor Sanford had worked more closely then Sc would be in much better shape financially. Unfortunately, most people who get into politics ( either state or national) think more spending is their job. Sanford had always been financially conservative. Also unfortunately, his Republican legislators in Columbia were as liberal as the Democrats when it came to spending. South Carolina was in potential financial difficulty when he took office. He tried to shrink government and put in place extremely conservative spending guidelines. Legislators are near incapable of doing that. Much the same thing goes on in Washington, DC also. Government spends and wastes too much money. Now there is no choice. There is no money. The stimulus that Sanford didn't want to spend is gone now and the defecit problems are greater than a year ago. I agree Gov. Sanford was often his own worst enemy, but if he had gotten more cooperation from house and senate Republicans Sc would be better off now. We know what Gresham Barrett would do. He's told us he'd do it all again!
If South Carolina elects another GOPer after Sanford then they deserve all that has happened to them
