Obama: 'Gathering up facts' on BP compensation

(CNN) – President Obama said Monday that federal officials are "gathering up facts" to help ensure that embattled oil giant BP fairly compensates people and businesses suffering losses.

Speaking before a crowd in Theodore, Alabama, Obama said that preliminary talks have started with officials of BP to try to reach an agreement at his meeting Wednesday with top company officials on how to ensure that damage claims from the Gulf oil disaster are processed quickly and fairly.

Obama also announced that he is launching a comprehensive effort to ensure that seafood from the Gulf of Mexico remains safe to eat.

Why is Barry gathering facts he doesn't even know what a fact is since he has been lying to all of us since his tranformation from community organizer to president. What a joke!!!! Only in America.

Sorry, but all this should have taken place from the beginning, not now. Excuse me, but since when do victims of any crisis, accident, whatever, try to reach an agreement with the one at Fault to pay for damages?????? Now he's going to launch a comprehensive effort to ensure the safety of seafood?????? Does he really think that pretty words will make everything Okay, people will hear him and go home happy????? Someone should tell him the people of Louisiana are not 5 year olds, these are people suffering a terrible situation!!!!!!!! My heart goes out to the people of Louisiana. This crisis hits us all.

This media circus on the BP spill is digusting. Between CNN and MSNBC salavating 24/7 on the tube is too much for my sensibilities. At FOX we expect this but you guys should know better. I guess greed is really what this is about. More viewers for your rants. CNN need to take a page from Zakaria and answer why they are amping up this narrative that the president is not doing anything. What exactly can he do? No one has the answer right now and the faster people recognize this the better.

Seafood is safe? They must have flown his in from Maine. No one in their right mind would eat anything from this region. Clean it up and stop all the red tape to do so.

I'm all for compensation from BP. But I don't think we need a President of the US down in the Gulf acting like an ambulance chasing Lawyer.

I'm sure he is.. someone else to bleed until their bled dry for his purposes like he is doing to every single citizen in this country. Everything is either a photo op or done to protect his mage, because of his massive ego. He has no idea how to lead this country, nor does he want to learn. All that I want to hear from Obama is that he is resigning in disgace

By promising to pay "all legitimate claims", BP means those for damages which are "proximately caused" by their and others' negligence. Many of the economic damges are unlikely to be included. I'd rather see a prompt temporary conservatorship or involuntary bankruptcy. Too bad for the Brit pensioners whose funds are invested in the highly risky endeavor of ocean extraction.
