Preliminary report clears ACORN on funds

(CNN) - A preliminary probe of now-disbanded community organizing group ACORN has found no sign the group or related organizations mishandled the $40 million in federal money they received in recent years, congressional investigators reported Monday.

A review of grants by nine federal agencies, mostly for housing issues, found problems with only one award - and in that case, the separately administered ACORN Housing Corporation quickly provided a missing piece of documentation, the Government Accountability Office reported.

Nearly two dozen members of Congress requested an investigation after a series of complaints against ACORN and its affilliates, including an accounting scandal, several cases of voter registration fraud and the release of edited videotapes made by conservative activists that appeared to implicate ACORN workers in facilitating prostitution.

How much coverage will this get. The media crucified this agency. They found nothing

So the accused was judged to be guilty of all charges and put to death only to find after the full investigation was completed that there was no guilt. Congress, this is a fine time to figure out that you were used by the Right to do their dirty work. You convicted and put to death an innocent organization. You just couldn't wait until the investigation was completed. You took part in what in the days of the Old West was called a lynch mobe.

I hope you feel really good about your actions.

ACORN has always been an excellent organization, very accountable and helpful to the community. Conservatives got all hyped because they tried to illegally prove this was a corrupt organization. They were not and now low income people do not have an advocate in their community. Sad that even Obama fell for the trick.

And Charlie Manson is a nice guy! I'd like to know who sits on the Congressional committee that filed this preliminary report! I'm calling BS on this one!

Incredible! An organization that was actually helping people but because it was somehow connected to President Obama it was destroyed.
Thanks for nothing again repugs and that little piece of turd and his little ho girlfriend who lied through their teeth about Acorn.

MMMhuh, yep I'm sure the "full scale investigation" didn't find a thing wrong. Current Administration politics I'm sure!

"two dozen members of Congress requested an investigation" and a scandal foistered on the American public by Right wing funded talk radio and talk tv blowhards.

A significant minority of Americans are ready and willing to believe the worst about any (take your pick) left-wing, progressive, African-American, affirmative action, urban grass-roots, democratic, gender-balanced program. As long as one ring wing bigot will fund the station, newspaper or shock jock, that 15-30 percent will jump on the wagon.

When the book of scrolls is opened on that last day, which wagons do you want to have God read where you have been a driver or passenger? Acorn has been a samaritan, do you so readily condemn it?

No kidding. This was an orchestratedfox news campaign to create an issue where there was none. it is better that way because when there is no actual issue you can pretend it is whatever you need it to be. So fox destroyed a legitimate organization, and for conservatives it had two added bonuses - it hurts poor working class people, and it hurts people of color. A real two-fer in conservative circles.

Nasty politics always attempts to destroy the weakest but they will stand because there is someone more powerful on their side. AMEN.

I watched this on C-Span and it was equally damning for both parties. The Republicans because of their sleazy charges with sensational embellishments (Enzi led the charge) that are proving to be false. The Democrats for their spinelessness to not necessarily defend, but to insist that no action be taken until the matter received a full investigation. Only 9 or 10 senators voted against it and only Sen Durbin of Illinois had the courage to deliver a speech pleading for the investigation. This was a well coordinated hit job by the whole Republican rightwing conservative community. Pathetic and un-American.

And yet the media, including CNN, cannot get the story straight about those edited videos and that clown that tried to bug Senator Landrieu's office.
My goodness but we live in an age, and a nation, of idiots.

What do you bet Fox will not report this story? And so its unthinking minions will never know the truth.

Which is just the way Fox, Limbaugh, Palin, O'Reilly, Beck, Hannity and the GOP like it.

ACORN was hatcheted to death by the rabid right because they were registering people to vote against them. that simple. every organization has a few bad apples. this was an orchestrated takedown of an organization purely for political motives. i truly believe there are no limits to the depths the 'right' (the most misnamed bunch i've ever seen) will sink to to subvert the democratic process and grab power again. just look at what happened in SC. how decent people can even consider supporting these monsters is beyond me. how easily are people duped these days?

Well, well, well, Acorn was not as bad as the conservatives would have us believe. Just another political ploy which cost us money for an investigation.

How many more investigations will be requested by politicians. I think we should be investigating them.

This is just a bigtime coverup by federal agencies trying to protect their source of income. They couldn't say there wasn't anything wrong because that would reflect badly on President Obama.I can't imagine anyone believing the results of federal agencies investigating themselves.Do you think people would trust the results of BP if they were investigating the oil disaster in the GULF?

So the Democrats determined that ACORN's efforts to elect Democrats was not a problem.

    Glad that was cleared up.

    What's the old saying?
'A day late and a dollar short'?
The 'reporter' of the edited video that implicated the ACORN workers in facilitating prostitution tried another stunt and got a slap in the wrist for that.
A new attempt was launched today (edited videos are edited videos, if they couldn't post the complete stuff shouldn't try to sell it – the edited stuff – as an authentic stuff) and all those who tried to justify the 'reporter"s (biased) motivations and (illegal) acts back then are now demanding the resignation of the overreacting dude of today's mega hit on the web.
For now, let's see those same 'law enforcers' dudes trying to undermine the fact that theirs claims about ACORN, so successful that the organization is now disbanded, were baseless...

No reason to EVER give these crooks 40 MILLION.

It is a joke. The DEMS use these liars and crooks to fix elections...

Oh by the way...Here is a nice update for all you DEMS.....

Pelosi's New District Office Costs $18,736 a Month

She is paying TWICE as much as the next congressman or woman.
She is a thief and she is costing us all 18000 a month... PLUS.

Congressional Republicans, and Republicans in general, freaked out over ACORN, and for what? Will this be a lesson learned – like investigate before freaking out? Sadly, I doubt it. And now an organization that assisted people in need is gone.

Anyone else getting sick of the way the Republicans behave when they lose elections, or is it just me? Why do we have to put up with this every time a Democrat is in the White House? I wish they would grow up and start working towards moving this country forward instead of trying to win elections at all costs, which apparently includes destroying us first.
