Washington (CNN) – Nearly half of all Americans disapprove of the way President Barack Obama is handling the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, according to a new national poll released hours before the president gives a prime-time address from the Oval Office on the crisis.

An AP-GfK survey released Tuesday indicates that 48-percent of the public disapproves of how Obama's handling the oil spill, up 15 percentage points from a month ago. Thirty-nine percent approve of how the president's dealing with the crisis, down three points from May. According to the survey, 13- percent say they neither approve nor disapprove.

Other recent polls also indicate that a minority of Americans approve of the way Obama and his administration are handling the massive spill.

The president's overall job approval stands at 50-percent in the new AP-GfK survey, up one point from a month ago.

"Other recent polls have also shown that the oil spill has not affected the overall opinion of Obama's performance in office," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Many Americans may think his track record on the economy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and other issues are more important than the situation in the Gulf. It's also possible that the oil spill has affected views of Obama personally but not his performance as president."

The president's prime-time address will come as he returns from a two-day tour of the region, Obama's fourth trip to the Gulf Coast since the environmental disaster began on April 20.

The AP-GfK poll was conducted June 9-14, with 1,002 adults questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

Unfortunate. Of course, if he throws the nutty that everyone really wants him to throw, then the GOP will just try to spin that into a mischaracterization too.

    Evelin,
Before the election, people were saying they were going to get free gas in thier cars and free houses. People really thought he was going to deliver that. All I can see him deliver on currently is more tax burden and more debt in the long run. The only thing he delivers right now is a good campaign speech. Come november, I hope most of the democrats in congress are delivering pizza.

I guesse to some people BP stands for Barack Problem You Obama haters and teabaggers really need to get a life or get some you know what. Why is it that when every goes wrong in the world, you need to blame Obama.

Wow how many polls have they run about the Oil Spill approval rating? Every day there is a new poll. Nobody "approves" unless it stops – just common sense. What is Obama suppose to personally take a submarine down and grab a robot to "fix" the leak? Even then the Neo-Con activists would complain.

Thank God Obama is in charge and not half-wits McCain and Palin.
That would be the real nightmare.

Look, I am certainly no fan of Barry Soetoro Dunham.

But even *I* am willing to admit the president does not have a roll in oil clean up, other than being a PR cheerleader for the effort.

Look, the guy is a radical, dangerous, inexperienced, socialist piker... but give the man a break on this one. I've read the constitution several times, and I don't recall seeing "oil spill mopper upper" as a duty or responsibility of the executive branch.

Withy the media demanding that you "perform" for them and scream and yell, what can you expect. This is a MEDIA created frenzy. What possible more could he do? He also has a fee other things on his agenda than dancing for the cameras in the Gulf area.

Nearly half of all Americans feel the President is doing a terrible job on the OIL spil. Well, if nearly half of all Americans will go down to Gulf Coast, out some kind of gloves on, the spill will be gone in just few hours. But oh NO, WE are one selfish individuals in this culture. It is always ME ME. So, stop taking those STUPID pools and put some gloves on, thats American.....oops that was in the good old days.

    Oh nooo, LOL
Whatever you say, it's not like he left thousands of people inside the Superdome without water for days, neither did he sing "drill baby drill" before the oil spill like Republicans do in both cases.

This is an unprecedented disaster, and I think the president is doing a very credible job considering this is such new territory for our nation. All of the armchair quarterbacks are easy to criticize, but not come up with ideas. to fix the problem. I dare say any president would get the same flack.

Only HALF realize Obama is doing an awful job? Does the other half not have a pulse? It is quite simple. THREE days after the well blew up the Netherlands offered to help skim the oil off the water using their special ships but Obama said no. Within two weeks after the spill 13 (that's right THIRTEEN!!) countries offered to help in the cleanup and Obama said no. That's what you get when you elect a Community Organizer with no leadership qualities. All Obama wants to do is point a finger at everyone else (including George Bush!!) but remember that when you point a finger at someone there is three pointing back at you. BP is responsible for the well but Obama holds the majority of the responsibility of the environmental impact. That oil should NEVER have made it to shore but Obama did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to stop it but had EVERY opportunity to DO SO!! Obama is a disgrace!!

President Obama should lead an intiative for all Americans to create an imperative towards alternative energies.

    Yes we can!
Learning from this disaster to do it better for our country going forward.

Let start with the fact that Obama was so willing to take BP.'s money while he was in the Senate and during his campaign for the presidency. Now, he wants the damage to be as bad as it can be so that he can advance his agenda of clean energy. All the time not telling us what he would suggest doing with all the nuclear waste created by moving the nation to nuclear power.

President Obama is doing everything he possibly can to address this spill. And I'm sure a lot of things that we don't even know about.

Face it everyone: The leak has to be stopped. Only BP can do that. After that it's all legalities. I'm sure the president is all over that. He might not be an engineer, but he will take care of the people in the Gulf.

Obamas presidency is a complete and utter FAIL. The entire Obama administration is a complete FAIL. The whole Radical Liberal Congress is a complete Fail. The Entire Liberal "Land of Oz" Philosophy is a complete FAIL. No matter how much CNN, MSNBC, NY TIMES, WAPO, ABC, CBS, NBC attempt to deny and downplay it, November is going to be one giant slap in the face to the far left ideology sttempted to be shoved down the throats of this country. And as far as 2012 goes, Obama will be lucky to even get there without either impeachment or physical removal due to the brewing revolution. LIBERALS ARE A DISGRACE.
