Angle has run-in with reporter

(CNN) – Republican Sharron Angle has largely avoided interviews with local and national media outlets since capturing her party's Senate nomination two weeks ago, but the newly-minted candidate had a contentious run-in Thursday with a Las Vegas television reporter.

KLAS reporter Nathan Baca asked Angle about a statement on her website that calls for "transitioning out" Social Security and Medicare programs.

"Why do you want to eliminate [Social Security] for younger folks," he asked.

Angle, who had just returned from a visit to Washington, fired back at him.

"You believe the Harry Reid lie," said Angle, who was campaigning at a Las Vegas restaurant. Angle said she does not believe in eliminating Social Security entirely, but instead transferring the money to private accounts that the government "can't raid."

"You're putting words into my mouth from Harry Reid," a frustrated Angle responded when Baca noted that the stock market downturn would have been devastating to seniors if their savings had been privatized.

"I want you to be very clear on this," she said. "I'm here to save Social Security. Harry Reid is here to bankrupt Social Security."

The former state lawmaker, once considered a long shot for the GOP nomination, easily defeated 12 other candidates in the June 8 primary, thanks in part to help from the Tea Party Express, a national Tea Party organization, and the fiscally conservative organization Club for Growth.

She now faces Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, believed to be among the must vulnerable Senate Democrats, in November.

Reid recently launched a campaign commercial, in which the announcer says, "Shockingly, Sharron Angle wants to wipe out Social Security." Angle's campaign called that ad a "deception, designed to divert attention from Harry Reid's own failures."

When the KLAS reporter asked about her stated opposition to the Environmental Protection Agency, Angle then replied, "Where are you getting these questions? The issues are not about the EPA. The issues are homes here in Nevada. He is trying to make this a campaign about me. But, where's Harry? Go ask him. Please go ask Harry about the EPA, and why they have failed."

Angle has criticized the EPA for proposing domestic energy regulations that she has said will be "harmful to most sectors of the domestic energy industry and eventually substantially raise the utility bill of every American."

Baca, who then repeatedly tried to ask Angle an additional question as she exited the restaurant, later said the Angle campaign aide called him "an idiot and another term that can't be repeated."

Campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told CNN the comments did not come from an Angle aide.

"I reviewed the video," he said. "I do not recognize the person in the video that the reporter was talking to. It was not an employee of the campaign."

A Mason-Dixon poll conducted a week before Angle won the primary showed her and Reid statistically tied.

I am tired of politicians saying that they are 'angered' and 'outraged'...spare me your phoney outrage.

Typical REPUBLICAN. They consistently talk trash about everything Democrats do or say, but YET, they never seem to able to answer basic questions about their own policies, political record or issues. They spend 95% of their time blasting the Democrats about everything and anything and yet can't seem to come up with one SOLUTION to the problems facing our country. Talk is cheap, cheap, cheap.

    What a bunch of cowards!!

Every thing is Harry's fault. That bimbo made a comment and now she's trying to get out of it. Same old GOP crap.

Sharron Angle, if Social Security or the great United States of America needs saving... they need saving from you!

You, over-emotional, right wing, wing nut are truly SCARY!

I'd hardly call that snipit a "run-in" with a reporter. It sounded like she was clarifying her position on not allowing the spend-frenzied Washington politicians to abscond our hard earned dollars. On the other hand, Mr. Baca needs to rethink his neutrality as a reporter. The way the question was phrased was necessarily confrontational–aka "gotcha" journalism. The trouble with this type of reporting is that it diminishes the entire industry.

Wow! Sounds like Angle can't keep her cool very well. Doesn't bode well for her performance in the Senate if she can't handle one reporter with a little class and decorum.

I'm looking forward to the headline that says: ANGLE HAS RUN-IN WITH REALITY.

    Now THAT'D be a story.

    This one, not so much.

Has she located HER government implanted micro-chip yet?! Just asking.

I'm not a fan of most Republican Politicians and DEFINITELY don't mesh with the Tea Party, but I have to say I like this woman's frankness. She doesn't mess around and aptly defends her positions. You have to respect that much about her.
Unfortunately she is doing exactly to Harry Reid what Harry Reid did to her by throwing out skewed accusations, i.e. "blaming" him for the EPA. Once ALL of these politicians realize that "those people across the isle" aren't out to destroy the US, then maybe they'll actually be able to compromise and accomplish a few things instead of running around like a bunch of headless chickens.

In good faith, I've paid into the Medicare and SS system for the past 33 yrs and will continue for another 20. Ms Angle, Keep your filthy teabagging hands off my future SS and Medicare benefits. I've paid for them so that I can supplement my retirement ( If I ever get one ) and live out my last few years without burdening someone else. I don't want those benefits handed over to the wall street thugs. It's bad enough they played havoc with my 401 and I won't have as robust a retirement fund due to this deep recession. I'd trust my Gov as millions and millions of seniors have since the 60's, before I'd trust the rich bankers with those contributions. You people with money just can't wait to put us Middle Class folks into the poor house. Tea Party people are nothing but shills for Wall Street and corporations.

I guess asking questions about her views are out of line. She did say she wanted to "personalize" social security. I guess that is the new verbiage for privatize. I have no issue with setting up personal accounts, but how do you pay for it? The estimate 5 years ago when Bush was looking at this was $2t.

She is right. Social Security money has been improperly redistributed for years, not kept in a fund as intended. Giving government bureaucrats money is as intelligent as lighting it on fire, with equal result for those who have their money confiscated by them. If you are under 40, don't bank on ever seeing a dime.

You think unions and corporations do a bad job with pension funds? Childs play in comparison. They have a bottom line they are accountable for, at least the corporations. Those evil job creators...

You know...I seem to remember a time, perhaps not too long ago, that the private banking/financial industry proved to be too untrustworthy, unscrupulous and too downright greedy to be trusted with peoples' investments, let alone Social Security. Who knows...maybe I imagined it.

When you cannot even defend your own position on your own web site , maybe the GOP should hide Sharron Angle at Yuca mountian to read up on the issues.

Angle and so many other GOPers remind me of how the republicans yelled *flip flop, flip flop* during a Kerry speech.

And now, when THEY are called to task for their own flip flopping, the Tea Party shrills scream *Harry Reid, Harry Ried*. The video clips now surfacing which show many of Angles rather idiotic rantings – courtesty of Angle herself – are priceless. Thanks, Harry, for having the foresight to plant them on the internet those many years ago.

How can anyone trust these new republicans? They change their stories faster than most of us (let alone they themselves) can keep up with.

Evidently she wants to save social security by privatizing it.. which would likely destroy it if the market tanks again. I guess that`s a risk she`s willing to take WITH OUR MONEY in order to appease her ideological goals. Somehow she has failed to grasp the obvious, even after what we have just seen with our own eyes. Good God!

This woman is indeed scary. The American people do not want politicians who promote hate, anger, fear, division of our country and beliefs that will set our country back for years.

Investment firms have been after the money for social security for a long time. The truth is as most small time investors know, that unless you have all the time in the world to learn about and manage your investment, you will be on the losing side...investment firms will be on the winning side. They will always be on the winning side...its house rules in their casino.

Typical liberal media Attack Journalism, take the dems talking points and misleading statements about the Republican and push it in her face without context. I hope she continues to push back against these so called Journalists who will do the bidding of their masters in the democrat party.

This reporter would not dare to ask Harry Reid tough questions even if he could get close enough to ask any.
