(CNN) – The White House is beating back Republican charges that President Barack Obama is taking too many breaks during the ongoing oil disaster off the Gulf coast.
"I don't think that there is a person in this country that doesn't think that their president ought to have a little time to clear his mind," White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters Monday.
The comments came a day after Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele issued a strongly worded statement condemning the president for playing a round of golf Sunday, attending a baseball game Friday, and recently hosting Paul McCartney at the White House.
"Until this problem is fixed, no more golf outings, no more baseball games, no more Beatle concerts, Mr. President," Steele said in the statement. "The stakes are too high for President Obama's lackadaisical approach to both his responsibilities and the challenges we face."
Burton instead suggested the president's BP response has been whole-hearted.
"After a week where the president was taking on the oil spill; got a historic agreement with BP to put aside $20 billion to pay claims; after a day on Friday when he strengthened lobbying and ethics rules in the White House; after going to Ohio to talk about the economy and see the progress that is being made in some of those stimulus projects that are happening around the country; all the different issues that the president is dealing with, I think that a little bit of time to himself on Father's Day weekend probably does us all good as American citizens that our president is taking that time," said Burton.
Yes Mr. Steele, no more play time for the Pres. Might I ask you just what the hell YOU were doing in Montana besides vacationing? Oh excuse me, you were holding the hands of the Local Tea Party and their Reguglican cronies that are tied up with the Drill, Baby, Pollute bunch of oil barons. The next thing that you will whine about is that the Pres isn't as "colored" as you you are. Maybe you'd rather he'd take in a strip show or two???
Steele is the expert, yeah. Humph.
That's pretty funny considering Bush was always MIA....
Steele is a disgrace to the RNC. Absolutely embarrassing.
bite me, Steele....did Obama dump billions of gallons of oil into the ocean? NO. Did the BP CEO drop billions of gallons of oil into the ocean? YES. Why don't you bash the BP CEO for going on a boating trip during the weekend, you hypocrite GOP tool
THANK GOD HE WAS'NT @ SOME NAKED CLUB. What do you think about this steele? HA!
Michael Steele is an idiot.
For heaven's sake! The Prez needs to be able to do stuff he likes and it doesn't mean he isn't thinking about the all the issues. Let him have some relaxing time. He deserves it and no one should say otherwise. Grumpy grumpy people, get a life and leave the President alone to have his life.
I think a careful review of W's schedule is in order about now.....
I wonder what ol' Mr. Steele would say about all of Bush's Vaca's over the years? Hmmm.... Please, Republican party, no need to try this drivel, if you have something IMPORTANT to say, SAY IT!! if not, please start doing your jobs!!
Repubs...Um, WHO was on vacation and IGNORED the signs right before 9/11??
I'll never vote for a Republican.
Obama sent his mouths out to point at Hawyard taking a day off to go sailing but nobody has taken as much time off for recreation as Obama;
ball games, concerts, golf etc. Kind of a double standard, eh duhmocrats.
I wish the republicans would do something rather than try to divide the country. United we stand, divided we fall. I believe they would gain pleasure in our falling. I can't believe their goal seems to be destroy Obama instead of help the country. I am so sick of all the negative remarks. I am so sick of all the criticism I can hardly stand it. Obama is doing the best he can under very dire circumstances. It wouldn't matter what he did, they would find fault.
Obama's government failed to protect us from this catastrophe and he goes golfing.
This from the Republican Party whose leader for 8 years spent more than 40 percent of his term on vacation and many golf outings here in maine.
during which the president is being joined by family and former and current aides, will bring his total time spent at Camp David to all or part of 487 days.
Mr. Bush has made 77 visits to his ranch in Crawford during his presidency, and spent all or part of 490 days there.
where was Bush on 9/11 – on vacation
where was Bush during Katrina – on vacation
Did Bush stop taking vacations and trips to maine for golf after 9/11 or until New Orleans was "fixed" - of course not.
Hello-Mr Steele needs to leave the President alone. Maybe Mr Steele could get a job and not spend so much time in the strip clubs. This guy just can't figure it out-Maybe if all the politicians stopped fighting and just got to work, thing would improve.
Absolutely ridiculous. President Bush took 487 days at Camp David, and 879 days in Crawford, Texas.
And Obama goes golfing during a crisis and all hell breaks loose.
Didn't I just see Rahm Emmanuel on one of the Sunday talk shows chastising the CEO of BP Tony Hayward for taking some time to attend a yacht race? What hypocrites. The White House defends Obama as being deserved of some downtime but attacks some one else for doing the same. Where's my hope and change I was promised if I voted for Barack...yeah, I know...it was just a campaign speech!
Why can't everyone just work together for the good of the American people?? Oh yeah, politicians don't work that way.
Even if Obama plugged the leak on day one by stuffing Bin Laden and his gang down the well, the lunatics on the right would still find a reason to complain.
It's unfortunate that these folks would rather kick, scream, and drag their feet than offer up anything constructive...
Clearly, Obama should be in the Gulf, free-diving down to the oil leak and beating it back with his bare knuckles. If he hadn't golfed, then all of this would be solved! I hope the sarcasm is coming through as loud and clear as I mean it...
Another absurd comment from Michael Steele. Are all Republicans congenital nitwits and liars, or do they just turn into fools as they age?
