Obama deserves a round of golf, White House says

'I don't think that there is a person in this country that doesn't think that their president ought to have a little time to clear his mind,' White House spokesman Bill Burton said Monday.
'I don't think that there is a person in this country that doesn't think that their president ought to have a little time to clear his mind,' White House spokesman Bill Burton said Monday.

(CNN) – The White House is beating back Republican charges that President Barack Obama is taking too many breaks during the ongoing oil disaster off the Gulf coast.

"I don't think that there is a person in this country that doesn't think that their president ought to have a little time to clear his mind," White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters Monday.

The comments came a day after Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele issued a strongly worded statement condemning the president for playing a round of golf Sunday, attending a baseball game Friday, and recently hosting Paul McCartney at the White House.

"Until this problem is fixed, no more golf outings, no more baseball games, no more Beatle concerts, Mr. President," Steele said in the statement. "The stakes are too high for President Obama's lackadaisical approach to both his responsibilities and the challenges we face."

Burton instead suggested the president's BP response has been whole-hearted.

"After a week where the president was taking on the oil spill; got a historic agreement with BP to put aside $20 billion to pay claims; after a day on Friday when he strengthened lobbying and ethics rules in the White House; after going to Ohio to talk about the economy and see the progress that is being made in some of those stimulus projects that are happening around the country; all the different issues that the president is dealing with, I think that a little bit of time to himself on Father's Day weekend probably does us all good as American citizens that our president is taking that time," said Burton.

Shut Up Michael Steele! I'm tired of people who keep talking like they don't take time for themselves from their jobs. I mean seriously! If I see Michael Steele not at his office from now on for 24 hours a day, I'm going to say, GET BACK TO WORK STEELE! Because that's the attitude some people seem to have about something as this. Show me one job that you never leave the office!

Where were Republicans' criticisms when GW Bush played cowboy on his ranch for 1/3 of his "presidency" while America crumbled? At least Obama is doing a good job.

    Pretty typical response.

President Bush played a fair amount of golf, and got slammed by the Democrats as being lazy, not hard working, being lax on his duties as president, ect.

President Obama plays a fair amount of golf, and the Dems say, "What's wrong with a little golf?"

Mikey, what about the vacation time that the war criminal took when he was in the White House? This president at least is there and not in Crawford evey other month. He deserves a little time off.

Don't take Mr. Steele' s comments too seriously. After all, he needs the practice. He'll have to be sharp when he takes a seat at the Fox table as an analyst/commentator.

That's all this guy does is golf, campaign, golf, party, golf, campaign, party, golf, a little more campaigning, then off to the golf course, get ready for the evening party, again......golf, campaign, party......

And every single member of the House and Senate should be in Washington. They should be sitting in their seats in Congress and not off on vacation somewhere.

Every single employee at BP should be at the Gulf helping with the cleanup - that's everyone from the CEO to the clerks in the mailroom. They should be putting on their hazmat suits and picking up tarballs.

And let's face it - playing a round of golf for an afternoon is so much worse than, say, taking off to Texas for a week and riding horses (note the sarcasm there, GOP?), right? I mean, it's not like there was anything really important going on this weekend like Father's Day, right?

Most politicians never waste any time – they stick right to the agenda – just ask anyone living in the state of New York right now. Pot calling the kettle........

Fine about Obama taking time for Father's day. But the White House staff– Rahm and company– ought not criticize Heyward for spending time with his son at a yacht race. You can't have it both ways.

Steele has the nerve to say Obama has a lacadaisical response? WHO is he kidding? Obama has been more involved in the Presidency in the 18 months he's been in office than BUSH was in 8 years!!

And where has Steele been holding his "meetings"? He needs to shut up!
He's an embarassment to the Republican Party.

OBAMA is working harder than any president in recent history. What hasn't he had to take on since his presidency? Two long wars, a recession to rival the great depression and now the GULF SPILL..... give the man a break!

Terry Hayward wanted to clear his head also, and we have him hung from the nearest shrimp boom...

But, it's okay for the guy who took the blame for this disaster to clear his – over and over and over and over again?

    Typical double standard baloney.

How does a game of golf or any other activity mean that Obama does not care about what is going on. A few hours a week of leisure is important to keep a sane perspective on what he has to deal with the rest of the week. Do the Republicans not remembet that Bush took more vacation time than any other president and that was while a war was raging in Iraq. what makes that any different.

If they never complained about George "Mr. Vacation" Bush then they need to shut up now. I mean unless they're just party hacks. Because no one was gone more than George the Younger.
