Palin calls Emanuel a liar

Emanuel is under fire from Sarah Palin.
Emanuel is under fire from Sarah Palin.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin is taking aim at White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, characterizing the top Obama aide as an irresponsible liar.

"Rahm, u lie," Palin wrote on Twitter Sunday after Emanuel said on ABC's This Week that Republican Rep. Joe Barton's controversial apology to BP last week exposed the political philosophy of the Republican Party.

"That's not a political gaffe, those are prepared remarks," said Emanuel. "That is a philosophy."

"RahmEmanuel= as shallow/narrowminded/political/irresponsible as they come,to falsely claim Barton's BP comment is "GOP philosophy," Palin also tweeted in reply to Emanuel's comments.

The White House has not responded to Palin's comments.

At a House committee hearing Thursday intended to grill BP CEO Tony Hayward, Barton instead drew the headlines for an opening statement that apologized to BP over the $20 billion account to pay damage claims that the company created at the request of President Barack Obama.

Barton's statement – which was quickly retracted under pressure from House GOP leadership – provided Democrats an opportunity to deflect growing public disenchantment with how the government was responding to the oil disaster.

Acknowledging the political gift handed to his party by Barton, Emanuel also said on ABC that Barton's comment and other pro-BP statements by Republicans including Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul would be a factor in the November congressional elections.

"In case you forgot what Republican governance is like, Joe Barton reminded you," Emanuel said, adding the GOP considers BP the "aggrieved party" instead of the oil giant responsible for the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.

However, a statement later Sunday from the House Energy and Commerce Committee Republicans said Barton spoke off the cuff. The statement included what it said were his prepared remarks, which made no mention of an apology to BP or criticism of the fund the company created to pay for damages from the oil
spill.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of oil-rich Alaska also challenged Emanuel's comments, telling the CNN program "State of the Union" that the White House chief of staff was wrong.

UPDATE: White House spokesman Bill Burton responded to Palin's tweet Monday in the daily briefing with reporters.

"As a leader of the Republican Party, people would be interested in knowing whether or not she thinks that, as Congressman Barton said, that $20 billion set aside in a fund to pay the claims of people who have been harmed by the BP oil spill was a shakedown. I don't think that the American people think that," Burton said.

No, Mr.Emmanuel is not wrong. This is what 8 years of Republican deregulation has done to this country and it's citizens. Mining disasters by companies that couldn't care less about safety and an oil industry with its regulating agency in its pocket, creating the worst environmental disaster in this country's history!

We know that Republicans favor big business over the citizens of this country, but to apologize to BP for making them pay for what they've done? Unconscionable! I hope the voters remember this in NOvember!

Those were prepared opening remarks, designed to establish a completely different course the GOP planned to take with handling BP from the White House. Rahm Emmanual is completey correct in his assessment. Everybody knows the Republicans are just pandering to Big Oil, it's disgusting. They would sell out America, its people, everything in a heartbeat if they thought they could make a buck or two and undermine the current administration.

Wonderful people, doin' what they can to destroy America!

Nobody cares what Sarah Palin thinks. Nobody with a brain at least. She couldn't even finish ONE term as Gov! She is poorly-informed on almost all issues and appears to have little interest in policy, just making herself more money. I hope she runs in 2012, go Obama!

Yes it is true we have some many freedoms in this country, incl;iding the freedon to express our opinions, but it is time someone stop that oportunistic woman and make her SHUT UP!. Saint Sarah has nothing to offer to our country other than her foul mouth, but the fault does not fall on her but in the so called "conservative republicans" that are her followers, Sarah and Rush are verbal terrorists and the media and the country would benefit by not playing to their game and just ignore them.

lets face RUSH runs the republican party no one dares to challenge
him because if they do they are history and that is a fact and everyone

they can't think independent of each other if they do they are history
do you think Barton is going to lose his job it is all smoke and mirrors

Is there anyone who doesn't think that the Republicans want to let big business write its own rules? What does the phrase "small government" mean if it doesn't mean less regulation? The reason the MMS is in a shambles is because that is the way the Republicans run regulatory agencies.

And once again, why does the news media report everything Sarah Palin says? She won't sit for real interviews, she just sits there behind her Twitter account tweeting out her absurd remarks.

I'm sorry, but Sarah Palin doesn't have the integrity to call anyone else a liar. All she does is lie and mislead. She is worth less than the dirt I scrape off my shoe.

And as far as Barton's statements not reflecting the GOP's view... he's not the only one who's made such statements. Haley Barbour, Marsha Blackburn, and other Republican illuminaries have been falling all over themselves to cry that we're being too mean to BP. The GOP is in the pocket of big oil, they're addicted to the money that big oil pours into their campaign funding, and they have more loyalty to corporations than they do to the American people. Palin should know that, because when it comes to grabbing money, she's one of the worst offenders; she wouldn't even serve out her time in office because she was more interested in book and speaking fees.

What Barton said (and Palin reiterates) is that in the United States a party is innocent until proven guilty. Is BP guilty? Yes, it would appear. Should they cover costs of cleanup if found responsible? ABSOLUTELY!! No one (including Barton, Palin, or the GOP) is saying otherwise. What is incredibly scary is the president is acting like the judge, jury, and executioner without due process. THIS IS WHAT BARTON AND PALIN ARE SAYING!! We now have a president who not only thinks he is ABOVE the law but also believes he IS the law. The Democrat party cares nothing about the people (since their power is more important than the people) and those of you who can't see it will be the first to complain when you find out in 10 or 15 years that you have a country collapsing and any remnants of freedom are gone. Time for you to wake up and realize what the Democrat Party is trying to do. Only the unintelligent cannot see what is occurring by the Democrat Party.

So he says to look upon the actual performance of Barton and judge for yourself whether this person is a loyal citizen. Now St. Sarah and St. Lisa want to call him a liar because he asks you to judge on the evidence. Palin wants to tell you what to think, that you are incapable of judging for yourself. He is right about Barton and he is right about these two empty-headed twits who like being praised because their people are fascists.

We all know what the GOP thinks of Big Business. Let them run free, lower their taxes, cut their regulations, allow them to pollute, poison, etc. etc.

This whole story reminds us of George H W Bush stating that "it's never been proven that cigarettes cause cancer" all the while taking in big money from big tobacco.

The problem with their philosophy is that helping big biz does NOT help the economy....as has been PROVEN over the last several decades under Reagan and both Bushes.

So no, Sarah Palin...U LIE, and we all know it.

Sarah, put this in your tweeter and tweet it: Rahm spoke the truth, as did Barton. Everyone who is not a republican knows what the republican party is all about: money, power, and more money. It has nothing to do with human beings and it certainly has nothing to do with this Country. You see, we Democrats have known all this for years. It is the republicans who have been dazzled by abortion rights, gun rights, and lower taxes that were not in the "know". Well now they are and I dare say your dysfunctional party has lost quite a few voters with this realization.

  36. TheTraveler

Palin is an idiot (imagine that). Emmanuel it called right on the nose. Barton read prepared statements and has revealed, once again, the true allegiance and nature of the GOP. The GOP would rather save their own worthless hides and those of Big Oil and Big Business rather than to see justice done and their constituents concerns represented.

And talk about "the pot calling the kettle black", Sarah, the epitome of "political irresponsibility" is walking out on your constituents before your term of office up. You also lied to them when you took your oath of office because you failed to serve them as you were sworn to do. You're as shallow as they come. When the outside money got good, you walked out on your constituents and pursued only your own self interests. Your narrow minded attitude is more then painfully exposed every time you post or speak...

Now one would think that when is comes to lying, Sarah Palin would be the resident expert. I mean she even comes up with lies about the lies, what are about the lies. However, it this case she is dead wrong and sorry she can't help it and is lying again.

So, forget about the rhetoric and take a few intelligent moments and look at the action. The Republican party has been in bed with big oil for years and years, fighting to give them big tax breaks, big profits and big bonuses to their executives. Did any of the benefits of this corporate welfare flow down to YOU the average CONSUMER. What are you paying for gasoline now compared to 1999? Look it up!!! So YOU as the TAXPAYER GET to pay for HUGE executives bonuses, but also GET TO pay HUGE premiums to fill up your car.

So, I really do think we should all say "we're sorry" to the big, poor, responsible, oil companies. My heart is bleeding.

Palin is a very successful former governor. She took major credit for a $40B pipeline across Alaska. With all her executive experience, especially in the oil and gas field, why has she been totallyh silent and not offered some viable solutions to the BP spill and clean-up? Did she not learn anything from her vast executive experience? Or is she now too distracted with her breast augmentation to think of anything else? Put her mouth over the BP well to stop the oil flow. She should be able to handle that.

Palin should be the last person to listen too about lieing. She does it all the time and has been caught in so many of them even Fox News is having trouble with it (ask Bill O)

Why does anyone ever quote this lady anyway? Her 15 min. of fame has faded

Palin needs to accept that she will never play an active role in politics due to her limited intellectual abilities and subpar ethics. She may make underachievers feel good about themselves, but we need smart honest people making decisions on a state and national level. The country and her family would be better served if she were to direct her energies to a more helpful goal – perhaps research for how to prevent or treat Down’s syndrome. Just imagine if she had put all of her ‘star power’ behind something positive.

Rep or Dem... they're all liars. And as a Republican, I can honestly say Palin is probably the only one who is not a liar because she is too dumb to know how to lie. She is about as empty-headed as that glassy-eyed witch Pelosi. I cannot believe that the Rep party has allowed her to speak for us. No wonder we are considered out of touch with America.

As a young person in America, I am at a loss when I step into a voting booth. Who should I elect, a leader who lacks know-how, leadership, and backbone (Obama)? Or someone who doesn't even bother reading up on the issues to know what she is talking about (Palin)?

As a father, disabled vet, husband, and college grad, I fear for this country... we're truely going down the crapper.

This is funny. Barton spoke on his own behalf, as he indicated. He made a stupid political gaffe that betrayed his dependence on oil money for his seat. It did not necessarily reflect GOP party policy; however, it is not a secret that oil money can be found throughout both parties. I don't have a problem with that in principle. I do have a problem with it if the money buys one's soul, and this is what we face with glaring regularity in local, state, and federal government. The greater good of the nation comes first, then the constituents, and so forth. Party should be at the bottom of the list, but usually finds itself at the top.

Palin is a woman-child and I wish the so-called political commentators and pundits would stop sending attention her way. She is politically irrelevant.

Sarah Palin, with her record, calling ANYONE a liar is enough to make a (fully conscious) non-ditto-head spit a mouthful of coffee over breakfast.

Anyway, Barton's "shakedown" rhetoric was echoed - on the record - both in GOP releases/internal memos AND in on-the-record statements of other (oil-supported) GOP members of congress.

I'm shocked!, shocked! that the GOP would deny that they side with Big Oil. The protest too much. Barton's scolding apology is exactly in line with Republican thinking – epitomized by Cheney's secret meetings with Big Oil where he, with a wink and a nod, gave them the ok to do as they please, including cutting back on and ignoring safety precautions. The Gulf spill is a direct result of this GOP only meeting. The contortions that Palin is going through to convince us that Emmanuel is wrong belong in a circus. This is typical GOP hypocrisy and lying in their tireless effort to make greed a virtue.

I believe that Rahm's comments are true to a point.

Republicans generally believe in the idea of "trickle down economics". This is where, by lowering taxes and protecting large businesses... those businesses will "trickle down" those savings/protections/deregulation by showering the citizens of the USA with money and jobs.

This is a widely held belief amongst Republicans. Barton's apology makes sense and indeed is a perfect example of the GOP philosophy.

Now, I don't think ALL Republicans but the vast majority are a big fan of Reaganomics.

Barton's comments were obviously heartfelt on his part and not off the cuff. Just like Michelle Backman's comments that President Obama is "fleecing" BP and Haley Barbour's initial opposition to a $20 billion escrow until he tested the political winds, as well as his blasting the "left" for calling for better, aka honest, regulation of the drilling industry. The Republican party would shift the entire cost of the clean up to the US taxpayer and ignore the 11 dead in a hearbeat if they thought they could survive the polical aftermath.

For the life of me i can not understand why anyone would pay this numb skull any attention – much less the upper echelon of government. She is an on going joke that ceased to be funny the moment she was picked for the VP position. You would think the republican party would have placed her back in the closet or some place she would never be found – much less the point guard on a very bad team. As a Republican i am very embarrassed by the lack of leadership and lack of direction that represents our party today and i will express my disapproval in the only way that i can-short of strapping on a vest. The republican party is taking on water on dry land-go figure!

Palin must keep her computer hot with her "tweets" staying in the spotlight. Two thirds of the House Republicans signed a statement that said basically the same thing as Barton did verbally. it was posted on MSNBC and released with Friday's news. All the American voters want is a government of the people, by the people and for the people. All the negative statements by one party toward the other party does nothing for the country. Stop complaining and blaiming others. Don't do just what is good for you, but what is good for the country. I believe the politicians are just looking out themselves and not the American people.

If it was truly an "off-the-cuff" comment than why did it say almost the same thing on the GOP congressional website the day before Barton spoke? The GOP website even used the "shakedown" phrase. That's likely where Barton got it.

The irony is thick when a political snake-oil salesman like Palin accuses someone else of lying. What's next? Michelle Bachman accusing someone of grandstanding & adopting flavor-of-the-day populist principles?

The problem with Sara Palin is that she takes everything at face value and doesn't know how to read between the lines. Rahm Emanuel said that Joe Barton's comments "exposed" the GOP philosophy, not that they expressed the stated philosphy of the party. Everyone knows that the Repuublican Party has been closely allied with big oil since the inception of the industry. That is not a criticism of the party or the industry, just a statement of fact. Therefore, it's not a lie. Besides, where does "Drill, baby, Drill" Sara Palin get off calling anyone shallow, narrowminded, political, or irresponsible? She can't remember what she reads, she quit her job before then end of her term, and she accused the President of the United States of "...palling around with terrorists"? Good job, Sara!

Rahm crawled out of the same political swamp that obama came from, of course he lies on a regular basis. That is the chicago machine "pay to play" way and the really sad part about all of this is that Americans bought in the whole ridiculous notion that obama was going to washington to make things better. Obama is quite possibly the most corrupt prez we have ever had, but "news outlets" were too busy sending plane loads of reporters to wasilla to pay any attention to obama's laundry list of corrupt friends.

Of course Alaska's Sen. Murkowski and former Governor Palin would side with big oil against the American people and the U.S. government. Can you imagine if President Obama made a remark that wasn't in his written script and then he said "it doesn't count"? I'm very tired of Republicans accusing everyone of being a "liar." Palin can say anything she wants to thanks to our freedom of speech, however, she is calling the kettle black by saying the republican party is not in bed with the oil companies. All the tax breaks the republicans enacted favored the very rich and the oil companies. I know President Obama and his staff are not perfect, but they are still a far cry better than the last republican staff we had in office. Cheney and Bush were both liars and cheats.

Joe Barton created agreed upon, prepared remarks and then went his own direction. Looks to me as if he had some green light somewhere because if he didn't not only would the GOP and people like Palin call Barton an idiot – but they would let him know in no uncertain terms that they would not support him for re-election come next election cycle and find themselves a different mouthpiece. But notice that is not the case. Rahm Emmanuel is not saint – by any stretch of the imagination. Personally I don't like the man's tactics – however Barton is representing what many believe is the true voice of the GOP. If anyone thinks the GOP stands for the man on the street think again. These GOPers play a bit dirtier than their Dem counterparts – and Sarah Palin is proof.

The white house is calling it correctly. The GOP wants business to be unregulated and unrestricted, the free market approach. But this is what happens when that is allowed. Companies are not socially responsible, they are all about the bottom line and only when it impacts a significant number of people and communities do they attempt to paint a different picture. Attacks by the GOP against Emanuel are just efforts to deflect attention away from what is part of their core belief, business first, people last.

BP will be held responsible and rightly so but the Administration and their friends in the media, especially DNCNN, are using BP as a shield aginst taking blame for the failure of thr regulators ( the head of MMS was Fired with no explanation and no follow up from the media) and the horrible response in the clean up efforts.

DNCNN also left out Emanuel's comment theat iwould be "Dangerous" if the Republicans regain power in the Nov elections. The Dems will try to "Tar" the republicans with labels of protecting "Big Oil" but it is the Dems who got the largest contributions from "Big Oil" and it was the Obama Administration whose MMS looked the other way when giving BP the licenses to build this Rig. It was also the Dems who controlled Congress since Jan 2007 and had OVERSIGHT on Government Agencies like MMS.

Rob Emanuel's comment is not a lie, it’s a personal observation based on the evidence as he perceives it. After all the deregulation, by republican congresses, of the energy, financial, healthcare, etc. sectors and the manner in which many businesses in these sectors have damaged this great nation, it’s not difficult to understand how a rational, intelligent mind could come to the conclusion that republicans are more interested in the well being of corporations then the citizens they represent.

An example of a lie, would be perpetuating the notion of “death panels” when all credible sources have shown there to be no such thing; yet the liar herself, attempted to get the same language enacted as law when she was governor. If you want more examples, you need only to wait until Ms. Palin opens her mouth again.

Only the GOP could claim he was wrong with a straight face. Actions speak louder than Palin's tweets... all one needs to do is look at what theyre currently doing - opposing the consumer protection agency and legislation to lift the damages cap to ensure BP has to take responsibility - to know whose side they're truly on.

Just like his boss Obama, Rahm is using the disaster in the gulf for political gain.

Obama and Rahm are not plugging the leak! It's still gushing! Stop the political games, the golf, the concerts, the baseball games, and get your arse to work focusing on the gulf!!!!!!

Mr. Obama, Leaders do not take time off during a national disaster no matter how long it lasts or how hard you think you're working. Obama goes to a baseball game and Hayward go yachting. Looks like they are 2 peas in a pod.

Pre written testimony is not a "gaffe". The Republican who apologized profusely to BP because Obama talked them into showing some responsibility was reading from his own well thought through and vetted policy statement!

Ms. Palin, as usual, spouting complete and utter nonsense. Emanuel is correct in his characterization of Barton's comments. They do in fact reflect the GOP's philosophy towards Big Oil.

I love this guy! You know how I know he did something correct? It made Sarah Palin mad! If she were to ever agree with the guys I voted for I would surely know that the great underground furnace had frozen over. She is a brainless tweet...pun intended and he should be happy she took him to task for his remarks. He was spot on and she knows it! Off the cuff often is code for "what I really think" and is 10 times more telling of a persons mind and character than a prepared speech that is filtered through all kinds of political correctness. I know it pains the GOP today to have their dirty little secret spilled...off the cuff. But it does show their true colors. But those of us who were already paying attention...it was no surprise.

Palin can quack all she wants but the Republicans can't change the definition of gaffe. That was no off the cuff mistake in what he was trying to say, that was a thought out statement of his true beliefs. Never in my life have I seen anyone have to apologize for an apology. To let them get away with calling it a gaffe the definition of gaffe will have to be changed.I suppose they are just as willing to say that Helen Thomas was only guilty of a gaffe when she spoke what was on her mind?

  282. America Shrugged

Let's face it. The GOP philosophy is to let the market do what it does naturally without interference from the GOV. The other philosophy is that unfettered free market capitalism is not always the answer and so regulations are needed to help prevent disasters like what we are experiencing in the Gulf right now. Of courseif you are going to be a regulator, it would be helpful to make sure you are providing oversight and not hiring Energy company friendly staff which aren't really doing much of anything. I'd replace the entire department with competent people. Too many leftovers from previous administrations. I wish Obama would clean house. I think this country would be better served as would he.

. These people, this administration, don't care as much about helping deal with the oil spill as they care about the political ramifications to themselves. During the campaign, it was brought up by some people
(not the media, of course), that Obama had never really run anything. The answer given by his "camp" was that he had run his campaign. Well, that is what he is still doing. That is obviously all that this team of Chicago fast talkers can do. They are all spin, complete spin, and nothing but spin.
Here's the truth, and I don't care to hear your unjustified attacks against Palin. If she were the Vice President, the oil would never have reached the shore. That's the truth. You people elected a talker, and that's what you got.

Rom is right, it is a philosophy. All the dems need do come election time is to cycle commercials that contain a montage of all the republican madness that has taken place since Obama won the presidency from the shameless bigots holding signs to the shameless racist statements made by politicians already seated; to outright scaring the daylights out of our seniors and lets ot forget the countless affairs and infidelities. 297. George

If the public had not been so outraged at Barton's remarks, the GOP would never have told him to apologize for it. They are the ones who are liars. The GOP always accuses Dems of things they themselves are guilty of. They call them liars when they are lying. They call them immoral when they are the ones meeting for sex in bathrooms and molesting congressional pages. They call them tax and spenders when they are the ones raising taxes, growing government and reducing taxes for the wealthy only. They bloat the military and spend on nothing else this nation needs accomplished.

Sarah Palin should give specific examples of how Rahm Emanuel is lying before she calls him a liar. Just saying he's a liar because he expresses his true opinion of the hypocritical GOP is not lying. He is entitled to his opinion, whether she likes it or not. If she really felt he was lying on purpose, she could sue him for slander, but of course, she won't, because her case would be laughed out of court.
