Obama asks Congress to approve spending for border security

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama asked Congress on Tuesday to approve $600 million in emergency spending for steps to increase security along the border with Mexico, a key issue in the immigration reform debate.

In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Obama said the money would pay for hiring 1,000 new border patrol agents and 160 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, two unmanned aircraft systems and other support for border security.

Obama's letter also said the spending would be partially offset by canceling a $100-million Homeland Security program that the president described as "lower priority."

Republican critics complain that Obama has failed to devote proper resources to border security, which they say contributes to an untenable flow of illegal immigrants into the country from Mexico.

Obama contends that border security is one aspect of comprehensive immigration reform needed to deal with the illegal immigration issue.

Last month, administration officials disclosed that Obama planned to deploy up to 1,200 more National Guard troops to the border with Mexico and request the additional money referred to in Tuesday's letter.

A previous troop deployment to the border region, called Operation Jump Start, ended in 2008. The operation sent more than 6,000 troops to California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to repair secondary border fence, construct nearly 1,000 metal barriers and fly Border Patrol agents by helicopter to intercept illegal immigrants.

The cheapest and easiest way is for the republican corporations to stop hiring them.

If there are no jobs, they won't come.

We can also get about $30 billion by cancelling the foreign aid we send to Mexico every year and transferring it to the border budget.

Obama could also cancel all the funds earmarked for Homeland Security's support of the Gulf oil spill, as there is no support there.

  4. Taxes and more Taxes

Obama must think he is running an airline. He wants to add taxes for everything. We ALREADY PAY FOR BORDER PROTECTION. We shouldn't need Congressional action and emergency funding to enfoce what we already have. Emergency spending is another name for 'BORDER PROTECTION SLUDGE FUND".

Luggage fees to airlines = Obama taxes to this country

Next he will be taxing us to use our own bathrooms. There will be a VAT for each flush we make.

Now that the President has done something regarding border security I wonder what the rethugs will whine and complain about.
I am sure they will think of something. Not enough money (that would be BIG government) and not enough NG troops (they are all, thanks to the shrub in Iraq and Afghanistan).
Oh well. Tomorrow is another day.

Funny they can find money to try and fend off illegals, but can't find money to assist the people already here who have lost their jobs and homes. No doubt the GOP won't have any problem at all approving this.

Did you know that border security and the number of deportations has increased dramatically under the Obama administration? Forget the spin, get the facts.

Security is needed badly there, but comprehensive immigration reform is needed more here. We can't allow states like Arizona to bully human beings and tear families apart. The laws that we have now are not working and border security alone will not fix the problem of illegal migration, changing the ancient laws and making them fair to people who come here.

And those same idiot Republican critics were in power for 8 years prior to Obama and what did they do to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into the country? Nothing or it would have already been in place..

They are playing dirty politics..... as usual..

Here come the complaints about Obama spending more money! This move is going to blow teabaggers minds– do they complain about the spending even if it's for something they want?

Now watch the Republicans complain about this. It's great being a Rethug these days. You don't have to work, just wait for President Obama to do his work, then you can self-righteously dispute everything he does. Oh, by the way, a big shout out to Joe Barton for telling it like it is. Is there any doubt now whose side the conservatives are on? Not America.

This is another one of his cover you butt schemes. He doesn't intend to do anything. It is up to us border states to do something like Arizona. We here in Texas are sick and disgusted that our country will allow gangsters to walk in here and do whatever comes to their mind then flee back to Mexico. They even have the gall to try and fly their flag instead of the U.S. If Mexico means so much to them then why in the Hades are they here for. I know why Obama wants them. If he can find a way to give them amnesty it will be another Democratic vote. This is like voting for the devil.

congress is the judicial arm of government they should stop playing with our intelligence and enforce the immigration laws we are not stupid and will NOT accept another amnesty President Obama is acting stupidly by playing the immigration card against legal citizens He will lose, as will congress the citizens who live the dreaded daily havoc of dealing and encountering illegal arrogance murder hit and runs identity theft anchor babies every where overcrowded schools and hospitals emergency and fire and police constantly hyper active dealing with the kinds of crimes that are somewhat foreign to u.s. citizens ie stabbings sexual assaults against children and adults lots of domestic violence you name it this country is in culture shock. and if this 110 congress grants amnesty to illegal aliens for the eight time since 1986 they too will be in shock because the American people will revolt. .

Has anyone mentioned to obama that there are nearly 20 million American citizens unemployed? He is worried about the illegals (Dem voters), cap and trade, handouts, bailouts, everything but the American families that want and need to work for their living.
Seems that obama will not be satisfied until America is a third world country.

Let's see how long before the republican cockroaches scatter and change their complaints now that they've gotten what they've been whining about. They'll find another ridiculous reason to criticize the administration, it's all they've got. No solutions, no suggestions, nothing constructive, just complaints. They've got nothing, and the president cuts them off at the knees, again.

.......Let me guess Republican idiots......Obama's spending too much money on a matter you've recently whined more about like a constipated baby since Arizona. If he didn't do anything at all, then you constipated babies would complain about that as well.
