New Reid ad calls Angle 'extreme'

A new ad from the Reid campaign paints Sharron Angle as 'too extreme.'

(CNN) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's re-election campaign is out with a new television commercial Wednesday that calls his Republican challenger Sharron Angle "just too extreme."

The ad, which the Reid campaign says is running in the Las Vegas and Reno TV markets, appears to be another attempt by Reid to paint Angle as too conservative and out of the mainstream for a majority of Nevada voters.

In the commercial, the narrator says "You've heard Sharron Angle wants to wipe out Social Security. Now she says it's like welfare."

The ad continues with audio of Angle, from an interview last month with KNPR, saying "my grandfather would not even take his Social Security check because he said he was not up for welfare..."

That clip is followed by a soundbite of Edward Coyle, from the Alliance for Retired Americans, saying "the money that people have invested in Social Security all their working lives is their money. To call it welfare is just plain insulting."

The new ad follows another Reid commercial launched earlier this month that also targets Angle's stance on Social Security.

"Shockingly, Sharron Angle wants to wipe out Social Security," says the announcer in the earlier commercial. "She'd cut benefits for everyone coming into the system."

On Social Security, the former state lawmaker says "free market alternatives, which offer retirement choices to employees and employers, must be developed and offered to those still in their wage earning years, as the Social Security system is transitioned out," according to her campaign website.

As for those currently in the system, Angle adds that "the government must continue to keep its contract with seniors, who entered into the system on good faith and now are depending on that contract."

The former state lawmaker, once a long shot for the Nevada Republican Senate nomination, easily defeated 12 other candidates in the June 8 primary, thanks in part to help from the Tea Party Express (a national Tea Party organization) and the Club for Growth, an anti-tax group.

Angle's campaign has not yet responded to a CNN request for a comment on the new Reid commercial, but in response to the first commercial, Angle campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told CNN that "Social Security has become a broken system that Harry Reid is unwilling to sincerely address during all his many terms in office."

Polls suggest that Reid faces a tough road to re-election this year as he bids for his fifth term in office.

UPDATE 6:53 p.m.: Angle campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy said in a statement late Wednesday that "Harry Reid is down in the polls and he is trying to divert attention away from the fact that he is one who is extreme - Obamacare, cap & trade, amnesty, the stimulus, the bailouts ... Nevada is suffering from the worse unemployment and the worse housing-market in the nation and Harry Reid is attempting to try and portray himself as anything but a politician who has been in charge of this plundering out-of-control federal government, but the voters are not being fooled by his nonsense."

Angle is just another lightweight Republican who's trying to make her name by being snarky. People ask her questions about statements on her Web site, and she complains of the "gotcha" media.

No ideas and no common sense. Pretty pathetic that the GOP has sunk so low to throw their hopes behind a dingbat like Angle.

"Harry Reid, who passed a law that applies only to a segment of the population while exempting others"

And precisely what is the problem with that? There are plenty of laws like that. Let's see....why don't we start with the federal tax benefits provided only to HETERO married couples and work from there? It should be noted, however, that not all laws like that are necessarily wrong just because they apply to a segment of the population...altho the one I just pointed to is obviously corrupt and bigotted...of course, you wouldn't know any of that because you get your "education" from idiots like Limbaugh instead of books.

    1. Privatize Social Security, so we can all gamble our retirement in the Stock Market.

    2. Privatize Medicare! Good grief does this woman even know how costs would go up?!

    3. She is against alcohol and drinking, great news for Vegas!

Well, as a person that's spent almost his entire life living in California, I can certainly say that Reid is not what we would consider a true "Leftist". I know Nevadans love their guns, something that Harry Reid strongly defends. He's very centrist. For example, he is one of few Democrats that opposes the "Assaults Weapon" ban. What would NV do if they lost the strongest Senator in Congress? If Nevada knows what's best for them they will keep their senator as the Majority Leader. To vote him out would be ridiculous.

Ha. Liberals like to throw out the word, "extreme". If anyone is extreme it is Reid.

Reid has pushed through the extreme left programs that is destroying our country. Nevada is too smart to vote that clown in again.

Wow the Leftest is calling someone too extreme. With the direction this country has taken in such a short time while his party has been in power, and the agenda they have in store for us, and he want's to call someone too extreme.

Let's all take a step back and think about it. Harry Reid is bad for Nevada, bad for the country and has proven he will do or say anything to keep his job!! Harry Reid cares about Harry Reid, not Nevadans or Americans. If he cared so much, he would put his vote where our mouths have told him to. There is a popular bumper sticker in Nevada that tells the whole story of how we feel, "Anybody BUTT Harry Reid"!!! It's too late now for Harry to change our minds, he made up our minds with the butt kissing he has done with Obama and Pelosi and the far left. We don't want him, we don't need him and we won't keep him. Harry, GET OUT!

Why is my Social Security going to only be worth 73 cent's on the dollar when I retire? Is what Angle saying really that big of deal. I would be better putting my money in a money market account at the pace Social Security is going.

That's like the pot calling the kettle black! I've watched you on TV on the floor of the senate, Maybe you should replay those tapes of yourself. Then tell me who is more extreme in their thinking for the American people. November can't come soon enough, Mr. Reid!

These Tea Party fools are really messing things up for the Republicans. They seem to forget that all of their CRAZY statements are on tape these days. They can't just say it's "Harry Reid's fault". I see some of these post calling Harry Reid extreme. Now that's funny! He is as middle of the road as you get.

Why these conservative dislike welfare when this country got it wealth from it. Just think this country would be a fourth world country without social security and our economy would be a disaster.

Reid has the most liberal voting record in the Senate. Of course he is such a slime ball he has been acting conservative the last quater and even hanging out with the NRA. He is in all the NRA magazines. He goes by the DNC mantra of "Act like a centrist until your elected."

Pretty sad to see how many people are so ignorant as to believe Reid's lies. Reid is the one responsible for causing Medicare to pay 21% less for senior's health care.

desparation. reid knows that he is at the top of the list of people americans want out. he needs to portray his opponent in the worst possible light so that he can actually look better than most people know that he is. i for one would rather take a chance on an unknown than put up with a proven failure.

Reid has to take the focus off himself and his dismal record. By
demonizing her as an "extremist" he accomplishes that. In fact,
this Saul Alinsky method of attack, smear and demonize your
opponent is being used by incumbent Democrats everywhere.
Make your opponent the issue and you're halfway to victory.

Social Security is more than retirement benefits. If someone opted to put their SS money into the stock market as Angle and Pres Bush before her wanted, would they forego Disability Payments or Survivors benefits? No one has ever addressed this topic. Seems to me, as usual, no one has thought things through.

I am a Democrat and I think Reid needs to go. It is really a shame that the choice is so extreme. Reid will probably win because Angle is such a nut case. The Republicans are missing a wonderful opportunity to get rid of Reid by running such a waco.
