Manning, South Carolina (CNN) - Seated in the living room of the modest home Alvin Greene shares with his father, the surprise winner of this month's Democratic Senatorial nomination is still trying to deal with the notoreity and series of questions that victory has brought.
"I am the best candidate in this United States Senate race in South Carolina," Greene emphasized during a lengthy interview with CNN Wednesday.
On questions of how he could afford the $10,000 filing fee necessary to enter the primary race, he again insisted it was his own personal money savings he had accumulated during his time in the military.
It is "money I saved in the Army," Greene told CNN.
Greene, who was discharged last August, is not currently working and is drawing a monthly unemployment check.
Some state Democrats have speculated he was a plant by someone hoping to disrupt the race and want the origins of the filing fee funds to be investigated.
He emphatically denied that. "I have always been a Democrat."
Raising more questions are the circumstances concerning his arrest last November for allegedly showing pornographic images on a computer at the University of South Carolina. He filed for a public defender saying he could not afford a lawyer.
To those charges and the circumstances he would not directly answer the allegations. Saying he is "innocent until proven guilty" he said: "My lawyer is dealing with that" and "I am concentrating on my campaign issues...and not negative distractions."
A hearing on those charges is set for next month.
While many Democrats in the state saw no signs of any campaigning by Greene during the primary race, he said, "I campaigned some. I did campaign. But that is behind us. The primary is behind us. I am looking forward to the general election."
He would not provide any details of those activities. He did vow to be more active now that he is the nominee.
"I plan to do more, a lot more in the coming weeks." But when pressed for details, he did not provide them. He did say a website is up and running for his campaign.
As to the reason he won the June 8th primary against a seasoned state Democrat, Vic Rawl, explanations have varied from his being the first name on the ballot to accusations of ballot machine irregularities to people voting for him since he was African-American. This is Greene's explanation: "I won because I worked hard. I got 60% of the vote and the constiuents of South Carolina identified with me. I better relate to the constituents of South Carolina better than any of my opponents...I understand their day to day struggles."
While he said some leading Democrats earlier had pressured him to step aside, there have not been any recent efforts and if there were he said he would not yield to the pressure.
"I am in it all the way. I'm in it, and I'm in it to win it, and that is what we are going to do."
Please South Carolina Democrats!! Put up somebody who can beat that Jim Demented guy! Please. Has anyone investigated to see where this guy got the money to file for the candidacy? Did he write a personal check. Did money get put into his bank account from somewhere? This can't be legit. I would be willing to bet the Repugs were up to something in this State. They are so underhanded. They rigged the 1972 Presidential Elections so the weakest possible candidate of all the Democrats (George McGovern) would get the nomination for President against Richard Nixon. Guess who won!!!
Isn't he Obama's second cousin?
I wonder what kind of a woman gave bith to this idiot!!
Congratulations on your re-election, Senate DeMint! The DNC has not engaged with this guy, neither has the state Dems.
Is anybody investigating what? They should be investigating the incompetence of the SC Democratic party!!! People keep saying this guy never campaigned, how could he win? Apparently the Dem parties choice never campaigned either, so how could he expect to win? If he did campaign, apparently the people of SC weren't buying what he was trying to sell them! Now the Dems are saying the Republicans are so smart they could put up a candidate to run for U.S. Senate, do no campaigning, and win by a land slide!
Anyone who can't see that there is something very wrong in the fact that a man who didn't campaign, didn't have a campaign committee; didn't give any speeches, didn't do any campaign ads & didn't hold any rallies won the Democratic nomination . . . . ANYONE who doesn't understand how WRONG that is, is irrational or really, really stupid.
Hilarious..Liberals trying to blame Republicans for their unqualified candidate! When will they start to blame the right for Obama? Soon!
Of course he's a plant. He's going against one of the most corrupt politicians in history in Jim DeMint. Betting on a healthy dose of vote manipulation as well. This thing stinks like a South Carolina outhouse, which is to say all of South Carolina.
