Police: 'Not enough evidence' in accusations against Gore

(CNN) - Oregon authorities said Wednesday that a woman accused former Vice President Al Gore of "unwanted sexual contact" in connection with a 2006 encounter, but no charges resulted because detectives could not substantiate her claim.

In a statement released to the media, the Portland Police Department said the allegation involved an encounter between Gore and a licensed massage therapist at a hotel on October 24, 2006.

"The detectives concluded that there was not enough evidence to support the allegations," Portland police spokeswoman Mary Wheat told CNN.

The department explained its timing in releasing a statement Wednesday by saying that while the department does not usually release information on alleged sex crimes, "A national tabloid magazine has published a story discussing allegations made by a Portland woman against former Vice President Al Gore."

The department statement said police were contacted by a lawyer for the woman in 2006 and, "After repeated attempts by Portland Police Detectives to interview the woman involved, the Police Bureau was told by her attorney in January 2007, that they were pursuing civil litigation and declined the assistance of the Portland Police Bureau's Detective Division."

Ah yes. Although the allegations are unsubstantiated, she's suing. Surprise, surprise, surprise. It doesn't matter how this pans out, she's going to probably walk away with a settlement. Nothing like shakin' that little money maker.

If this sort of thing actually bothered anyone, except the victim of course, then someone like "Arnold" would never have been elected. Sadly, assaulting women is still not taken seriously. However, some women have made this very difficult for real victims because they'll make false accusations just to get attention or for publicity.

    2006????!

A "No thanks" to the police AFTER THEY contacted the police?!
"We're going to pursue CIVIL (CASH ON HAND) litigation instead"?!

I'm NOT saying nothing untoward occurred (possibly, remotely, maybe), I'm just saying....!

I was just thinking this morning about how many liberal media outlets will bury this story or try and put sugar on it because its about a democrat that President Bush beat in 2000.

Again, in America, particularly as a result of the "news" media, the accusation = the conviction. Sounds like someone's looking to get rich with a settlement.

CNN this isn't fair because you put former Vice President Al Gore name in this artical but your artical fail to enclude the woman name who made these allegations. Even the Portland Police Detectives tried interview the woman involved. But 4 years later????????

My question is why didn't this woman allow the police to continue their investigation and give a statement first thing? I think this woman was overwhelmed by the fact that there was some that had been in the press that was in front of her.

Someone was just looking for a payday. Women that make false allegations make it just so much harder for women with true accusations.

It sounds like "pursuing civil litigation" meant trying for a quick payoff, and when that didn't work out she's trying to report the alleged crime 4 years later.

  20. all the news that's fit to omit

Gore and Clinton are victims of the vast right wing conspiracy........

Actually they are just "typical" gutless anti-women bullies who have been allowed to get away with this garbage for years.

Funny how this liberal newspaper buried this story but were forced to print it now, imagine if this were Palin or Jindal or ANY other Republican?

Maybe Tipper KNEW this guy was a (D)-bag and knew this stuff was going to start coming out, they really should have just had the Clinton's "take care of it" as they have been known to do (stay away from the park benches lady)...........

The last paragraph of the article says it all:

The department statement said police were contacted by a lawyer for the woman in 2006 and, "After repeated attempts by Portland Police Detectives to interview the woman involved, the Police Bureau was told by her attorney in January 2007, that they were pursuing civil litigation and declined the assistance of the Portland Police Bureau's Detective Division."

In other words the woman in question was attempting to shake the former Vice President down for $$$. If her allegations were even remotely true, she would have cooperated with the police. Scumbag witch. If some news organization with any credibility scratched the surface of her story, they'd discover she was put up to her claims by someone looking to discredit the former Vice President. Hmmm, who would want to do something like that?
