Tea Party Convention moved to October

(CNN) - A National Tea Party Unity convention that was scheduled to be held in Las Vegas in July will now take place in October, according to organizers.

The event, organized by Tea Party Nation (a national Tea Party organization) and Free America (a conservative non-profit group) and other organizations, will still be held at the Palazzo Las Vegas Resort. But Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips confirmed to CNN Saturday that the date is being moved from July 15-17 to October in order to hold the event closer to the midterm elections.

"We concluded it would more advantageous to hold the convention in the middle of October just prior to the November elections," says Phillips in a statement.

Tea Party Nation organized and held the first national Tea Party convention in Nashville, Tennessee in February.
Phillips says that he and fellow organizers were so excited about what they term the success of the first convention that they scheduled the second convention without considering the timing.

"The heat in Las Vegas in July is keeping many who would like to participate from attending. We have also received numerous emails from people who were forced to decide between family vacations and attending the convention," adds Phillips.

He also says that moving back the date allows other Tea Party groups to attend the convetion.

Nevada Republican Senate nominee Sharron Angle was scheduled to speak at the July event. Tea Party Nation is encouraging activists to donate to Angle, who is challenging longtime Democratic lawmaker and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in this November's midterm elections.

Conservative radio host Laura Ingraham and talk show host and former CNN anchor Lou Dobbs were also scheduled to address the convention. There's no word if the change of date will affect the list of speakers.

Who cares? If the media would stop giving them free coverage, they would not exist.

I friend of mine attended a Tea Party rally. He told me the following anecdote which, according to him, was pretty much the entire experience in a nutshell:

Standing in front of my friend was a white guy, in his 60's, dressed head to toe in camouflage gear and carrying a rife. Talking with him was another white guy, in his 70's, dressed in an American flag jumpsuit, wearing a giant homemade cardboard hat that read "Stop Socialism" and had a bunch of dangling tea bags stapled all over it. My friend overhead one say to the other, "I'm really worried about these liberal nutjobs!"

SMOOTH MOVE BY TEA PARTY ORGANIZERS

With Tea Party Convention set for October, this would ensure television coverage 24/7 and thereby smother any Democratic late charge just before November's mid-term elections.

Now, the question is whether the Democrats will take this lying down (as was done during the year-long debacle to win health coverage), or will they 'man-up' and finally fight back.

Sounds like maybe they couldn't pay enough people to come. I guess a free copy of Sarah Palin's book just wasn't enough...!

I have been saying for months now that the Tea-Party was defunct, it only lives on in the minds of Journalists and the Media.
The Tea-Partiers have succeeded in taking the Republican party from a sure win in Mid-Terms to a maybe a couple of seats win – That begs the question "did the Dems infiltrate the Tea-Party to destroy them from within?.....Naw Dems aren't that smart, it's just Republicans being too smart for their britches, they were thinking that the best way to hurt Obama was to create this seemingly "popular rebellion" but that only succeeded in splitting the Republican party and radicalizing their faithful base, while driving out the Moderates.
Upon seeing all this I can now guarantee that Republicans stand a chance of losing even more seats in the Mid-Terms.

does anyone else see the irony of the Tea Party, which is supposed to be made up of ultra-conservatives which are normally considered to be very PIOUS people choosing of all cities LAS VEGAS to have their convention in? Wonder if they'll be discussing how much more they want to limit goverment unless it aides them with SS checks and Medi-care. while they'll be spending part of that at the casinos. This so-called revolution is becoming more transparent every day.

  9. President Steve declares...

Effective immediately, all welfare payments to able bodied people will end. All unemployment benefits to able bodied people will end.
The INS will begin raids on all large farms, meat packing and chicken catching houses, roofers, construction companies, landscaping companies, hotels, fast food restaruants and day labor groups. They will round up all non-english speaking illegal immigrants for deportation.
All people left without welfare and unemployment benefits will have to fill the void left in the above mentioned jobs.
Even though you cannot be taught common sense, all high schools will be required to teach "common sense 101" to teach kids the basics of being an adult. Filling out job applications, dressing for interviews, speaking intelligently and all high school kids will be sent to texting rehab.
Forcing able bodied people back to work will improve their health and diet reducing the need for comprehensive healthcare.
All colleges will be required to teach gun safety becuse once people are forced to work and be responsible the crime rate will sky rocket.
All municipalities will be required to use the revenue saved by cutting welfare to hire more police officers because there will be rioting and looting.
All able bodied unemployed citizens who are not in a college or trade school will be drafted and sent to the border to serve as border guards.

Immigration, unemployment and border security problems all solved with the stroke of a pen.

Are there money issues for these people who are out touch with reality? Or, are there internal divisions going on? Leaves one to wonder...

Maybe they should move the convention to December, then they could include a plank targeting Santa because he gives free gifts to children…thus supporting the Welfare/socialist state…

These people can't afford a $500 plate dinner and the cost of hotels in California but in Navada they can live and sleep in their cars and RVs. Tea Party people are being used big time.

Is it just me, or does it seem mildly ironic a Tea Party Convention is occuring in the City of Sin? I mean you can't get more tempting for a bunch of people than gambling, alcohol, strippers, etc. etc.

Unless, they are going to excercise their 2nd Amendment Rights and go shoot guns in the desert somewhere.

Plus if they move it to october they may actually have a real turnout that requires more then a hotel ballroom and drill baby drill may actually make sense when the gulf isnt dying.

Yes, I'm sure a lavish convention in LAS VEGAS right before the elections will convince voters that the Tea Party is all about fiscal responsibility...

At least their motives are transparent.
The shortened time allows them time to distribute lies and distortions right before the election, but ultimately it gives their candidates cover up until right before the election too.

Good. It will remind us closer to the elections just how 'out there' these people are. I really hope they throw a wrench in the works for the GOP. Keep up the good work Sarah!

The tea partiers and the Republicans are definately working together although I'm not sure even they realize how much. They both do a lot of talking. Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk. They both talk about nothing except what the Democrats are doing and why they shouldn't be doing it..They don't do anything themselves, they don't create anything better than it is, they don't come up with better ideas and then put them into practice, they just talk, talk, talk. In fact, I think the more they talk against the president and the Democrats, the more votes they will lose..Personally, I wish they would just shut up.

Moving the convention so close to the elections is a tacit admission that the "unity convention" is not for organizing anything for the fall. Instead, tacitly, the goal is to hold the convention when interest in the elections is as high as possible, so that attendance can be maximized. Pure marketing, in other words. Just what you would do if your real goal is to make as much money off the tea partiers, even at the expense of effecting political change.
