(CNN) - Elena Kagan lacks judicial experience and has a record of supporting liberal political causes, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee said Monday at the confirmation hearing for Kagan's Supreme Court nomination.
"While academia certainly has value, there is no substitute, I think, for being in the harness of the law, handling real cases," Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Alabama, said in his opening statement.
His Democratic colleague, Sen. Patrick Leahy, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said that Kagan would be an independent Supreme Court justice, and that he advised her to be open in expressing her judicial philosophy at her confirmation hearing.
Sessions is an absulute embarrassment to the human race. What a complete sham and hypocrit this creep is. Anyone is an "activist" to this bigoted nutbrain that doesn't wear robes and burn crosses.
Funny, Sessions and his colleagues didn't object to the absence of judicial experience in Harriet Myers. Compared to that vapor trail, Kagan is a rocket scientist.
He also objects to the fact that she may lean liberal. Are we to assume then that only those who are certified conservatives are suitable for the Court? Senator, when you became a minority party you gave up the right to set the agenda.
This woman is smarter than anyone on the Judicial Committee. She can run circles around anyone there. I just wish they would let this dog and pony show go. I am tired of the right wing hatred of anyone that is smarter than they are, which is about everyone else.
Enough theatrics! GET TO WORK ON GREEN JOBS!
Poor little Jeffy,go back to your Tara and feed your slaves.
Senator Sessions: I saw you on TV. English only please!
Yeah, I saw Sessions talking about Kagan this morning. He thinks she must "subjugate" herself to the law. Anyone else getting Old Testament bias against women from this?
I can't imagine Sessions using the word subjugate in relation to Roberts, for example.
You think she'll speak her true feelings? GIMME A BREAK.
Sen. Sessions has gripes with all Supreme Court nominees.
"... there is no substitute, I think, for being in the harness of the law, handling real cases," Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Alabama.
Is this the same Senator Sessions that praised the touted nomination of Harriet Miers for her lack of "handling real cases"?
Nothing like consistency from American conservatism.
Jeff Sessions is not a person who's words I would trust. Have known some pretty unintelligent lawyers and judges in my 68 years. Here is a lawyer joke. "What do you call a lawyer with an IQ of 50?" Answer, "Your honor". Have known some law school graduates that had to take the bar exam numerous times. All lawyers are not created equal. Some people have book smarts but no practical everyday knowledge. Kagan is a liberal, at least on paper. We need some balance on the Supreme Court. Some of their recent rulings make me wonder if the have any brains at all!!!
