Obama criticizes GOP while calling federal deficit major concern

Racine, Wisconsin (CNN) - President Barack Obama acknowledged Wednesday that the federal deficit is a significant concern, but he also criticized Republicans for obstructing what he called commonsense legislation and siding with big business.

In a campaign-style speech and in answering questions from a crowd of about 1,400 people in economically hard-hit Racine, Wisconsin, Obama depicted Republican opponents as obstructionists to necessary progress for continuing recovery from what the president called "the great recession" that started under the previous GOP administration.

"We already tried the other side's ideas," Obama said, adding that the choice now facing the nation is to "return to the failed economic policies of the past" or to keep working to build a stronger future.

Blaming Obama for the deficit is like blaming Gerald Ford for the Viet Nam war, only a Glen Beck fan would buy that.

Obama said he remains unsatisfied with the low rate of economic growth and high unemployment, and he also called the growing federal deficit a "very real and legitimate concern."

Admiting there is a problem is half the battle.
Let's consider this imminent Republican takeover of congress in November as kind of a voter " Intervention", a deliberate action taken to solve these problems quickly.

    Ok folks.
FACT – The economy was better in 2006? Yeah, it was.
FACT – Was it a solid economy? Definitely NO. It was a 'bubble' (which in economists terms identify ARTIFICIAL and BASELESS growth that are bound to crash thunderously sooner or later).
FACT – Did President Obama added more y billions or trillions do the debt? Yes he did. Not as substantially as some claims; it was a huge add, of course, but not the numbers said by 'the sky is falling' commentators of FAUX NEWS.
FACT – Could he had not done that? That depends on which sources you define as reliable. Most of those who says that he could, and should, not have done at least half of what he did were once well considered and listened... BEFORE the second half of 2008. Remember what happened then?
LAST FACT – Do Americans have such a shrot-term memory that they will forget that the crisis started BEFORE the inauguration of President Obama's term as some claim that it hasn't?
Come November and we will have the answer for that one...

Republican governance is starting some wars, drill as fast as we can, remove all industry regulation so corporations will not break any laws while stealing money from American 401ks in pensions and mutual funds with trades on valueless synthetic CDOs, provide incentives for companies to send jobs overseas and check the dipstick every 5 years and see if any American company actually DID ANY GOOD for America.......................the republicans know its a gamble but hey - they and their banks and their oil companies are making money -- so just trust the big companies and ain't free market just so much fun and easy to do ...... republicans just marvel at how goldman sucks is just so clever at how they can steal American money

Obama thought the corrupt stimulous bill was common sense legislation didn't he? Obama thought thousands of corrupt earmarks were common sense legislation so he signed them into law breaking his promise, didn't he? Obama thought that lying to the American people about the scope and size and cost of the corrupt healthcare bill was common sense legislation, didn't he? Obama thought the Cornhusker Kickback, Louisiana Purchase, $60 billion union payoff, and the Florida Gatoraide were common sense legislation, didn't he? Obama still seems to think that billion dollar circus trials for murdering terrorists in NYC is common sense, doesn't he? Obama still seems to think that reading the underwear bomber his right to be silent 50 minutes after getting off the plan is common sense, doesn't he? Obama still thinks that letting the oil wash up into the wetlands, and onto the beaches over 2 months into the spill instead of organizing a massive competent cleanup effort is common sense, doesn't he? Does anybody trust Obama's idea of common sense as we go over the cliff into a 2nd dip recession?

Wait and see, Obama will call for "hard choices" and for raising taxes but NOT for cutting spending.

Obama's lack of experience is reflected in trillion dollar spending programs; record debt; 17% real unemployment and a continuing recession now becoming a depression.

Put Obama in the unemployment line and get the country back on track.

The GOP is responsible for all of this mess, have we forgotten the GOP's slow response to Katrina? the financial meltdown? we know exactly which party protects Wall Street above all things. President Obama, you are doing a great job, at least we do not hear anymore that thousands of people are losing their jobs or thier homes on a daily basis as it occurred during the 8 years of the BUSH-GOP administration...

Who cares about the debt, the IMF is a joke. All countries have a debt (even China who has a record of human rights violations and currency manipulation) and the world #2 economy (Japan) is in much worse shape then is the USA, something will give. International currency is an experiment and it is obvious that significant errors occurred as all of the countries responsible for building the world economy are in debt trouble, one way or another a reset will occur. The only true value of a country is their military might, natural resources (energy, water, food), transportation routes and control over space and the oceans.

"Do all democrats believe that Guam might tip over if we send more marines to that island or is that just the people that democrats vote for to lead the country?"

Thank you for highlighting one clear advantage the Dems have:

The Dems, unlike the GOP, do not march in lock-step, require party purity and apologize to a talk radio host for being "off message." Ergo, you can't blame all of them for the idiotic statement of one...like you can with the GOP.

"If we already tried the other side's ideas and Obama considers those ideas failed economic policies of the past then why does Obama keep asking Republicans to give ideas?????"

Because their failure to either (a) respond with an idea or (b) respond with a NEW idea, highlights that they've got nothing....NOTHING.

Republicans have zero credibility on the topic of fiscal responsibility. They spend more than the Dems do, only they spend it in far away countries for unneeded wars. At least the Dems do their overspending within our own borders.

Deficit for which republican are worried will be half as soon as economy will rebound and other half will go away as soon as bush tax cut will expired.
we will have surplus like Clinton's year.
Republican knows this and this the reason they obstruct so that president fail in reviving economy.

well his new piece of legislation isn't going to bring more jobs..it will send more overseas. How dumb do you have to be to not see that one person asking can bring a union into a company isn't going to make jobs but send more elsewhere!!! If you force companies to be unionized, (and lets face it it is forcing them) they will go overseas! Washington is nothing but socialist elite who do not care for the people!

Funny isn't it, when George W. Bush was DOUBLING the Deficit not a single Conservative complained!

Even though the Bush Wars are costing $6 BILLION a month, not a single GOPer complains!

And though during the 8 YEARS that Bush was president a net total of ONLY ONE million jobs were created, not a single GOPer complained!

Now...... the Obama Administration has already created in 17 months, over ONE MILLION jobs, but the GOP still complain!

DID YOU Republicans simply forget that it was BUSH and his Treasury Sec., Hank Paulsen (former CEO of Goldman Sachs) that BAILED OUT BANKS AND WALL STREET?

And do you realize that had Obama not come in, and further help the Banks our whole banking system would have collapsed?

    Good grief!

  22. Victim of GOP Taliban

Obama took office with a budget 1 Trillion in the red...Obama was forced to implement the 2nd TARP...plus stimulus bills...and PAID for the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan instead of adding to the debt like the Republicans did.

Don't complain hypocrites when Republicans did nothing for 8 years but add to the debt, create a bunch of expensive new government agencies that we didn't need, ruin the economy and let Big Oil and Wall Street run wild.

  23. The economy is doing greeat under Obama....

Unemployment is low @ 9.7% even if it's 16% in Michigan and elsewhere. Obama's socialism is working and we need to raise taxes so I can continue on the dole. In fact, I demand a bigger unemployment check and Obama is going to get it for me so I can shoot pool and hang out with my buds.
