Arizona Gov. to Obama: Do your job!

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer says she's not happy with the president's border response.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer says she's not happy with the president's border response.

(CNN) – The same day President Obama is delivering a high profile speech on immigration, a web video is making the rounds featuring a frustrated Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer imploring the president to "do your job" when it comes to securing the borders.

In the web video posted earlier this week, Brewer stands in front of recently erected signs 80 miles from Arizona's Mexican border that warn travelers "smuggling and illegal immigration may be encountered in this area."

"Two weeks ago I met with President Obama, he promised that we would get word from his administration on what they were going to do to secure the border. Well, we finally got the message, these signs," Brewer says. "I'm 80 miles away from the border and only 30 miles away from Arizona's capital. This is an outrage."

"Washington says our border is as safe as it's ever been…Does this look safe to you? Washington is broken, Mr. President," a visibly angry Brewer continues. "Do your job. Secure our borders."

The newly-erected signs are the product of the Bureau of Land Management, according to local TV station KPHO, amid urging from local residents who have witnessed a wave of drug-related crimes.

Brewer's comments come more than a week after a senior Obama administration official confirmed justice department lawyers are planning to file a legal challenge to the controversial Arizona immigration law championed by Brewer.

Federal government lawyers who have been working on the expected challenge for several weeks will most likely file their arguments in federal court in Phoenix in the days leading up to July 28, when the statute is scheduled to take effect, the official said.

Administration officials have indicated the question of Arizona usurping federal authority to control the border and enforce immigration law is the most likely federal point of attack against the state law signed by Gov. Jan Brewer earlier this year.

In his immigration speech Thursday, Obama again took aim at the controversial Arizona measure, calling it "ill conceived."

"It is not just that the law Arizona passed is divisive, though it has fanned the flames of an already contentious debate, laws like Arizona's put huge pressures on local law enforcement to enforce rules that ultimately are unenforceable. It puts pressure on already hard-strapped state and local budgets," Obama said.

The president also defended his efforts to secure the border both with Mexico and Canada.

"We doubled the personnel assigned to border enforcement security task forces," he said. "We tripled the number of intelligence analysts along the border. For the first time we have begun screening 100 percent of southbound rail shipments. And as a result, we're seizing more illegal guns, cash, and drugs than in years past."

"The bottom line is this, the southern border is more secure today than at anytime in the past 20 years," Obama added.

The right-wing wants smaller government – but one that solves every need of every white person. Solving the immigration problem is fairly simple – issue a high-tech national ID card required for every single financial transaction. It would also help to arrest the owners of businesses failing to check these cards before hiring. I suspect this might set-off a round of dialogue about the "mark of the beast" nonsense – from the same right-wingers.

Governor Brewer is an embarrassment. What an idiot. Those of you that think this is about immigration are even dumber. She is playing you for fools and only the most ignorant are falling for it. She has done absolutely nothing to address the problem but grandstanding and whining. Her racist law is about politics and nothings else. They have no money to enforce it, and no resources to support it. She is just counting on you being to stupid to notice. People like her and SP that appeal to the ignorant and the least informed make allot of noise but ultimately help nobody but themselves.

I assume that the state of Arizona has made sure all the janitorial services and lawn/garden services employed by any and all state agencies is completely, 100%, staffed with people who are in the US legally. If not, why not?

I'd really like a news organization to do a bit of investigative reporting on who takes care of the grass around Phoenix – and for each and every legislator in the state. Also, who cleans their houses and takes care of their children. Start by proving to the rest of us that you practice what you preach.

It's funny how all the people who accuse Obama of playing the "blame game" are the same people who always blame Obama for everything wrong with this country...

Hooray for Gov. Brewer. It is long past time to secure our borders. Those that do not see our borders as a pipeline for potential terrorist activity are living under rocks. The world changed with 9/11, and those of you decrying Gov Brewer better wake up before you head to the mall some afternoon and find your family members disintegrating from an IED. The threat is real and needs to be addressed. At least one governor has the "huevos" to address the issue of illegal immigration. Wake the heck up America, you're dissolving like an Alka-Seltzer, your infighting the fizz~

Heaven help us. Is there a female in politics in this country – ANYWHERE in this country – who doesn't come across as a Category 5 moron? First we have half-term governor of Alaska Sarah Palin telling our President to "do his job" when she ran out halfway through hers. Now we have this woman laying the years-old problem of "border busting" (I refuse to call it "immigration" of any sort) at the feet of the current President. I wonder if she would do that were the President a caucasian Republican?

Governor Brewer is just politicizing the need for immigration reform for the fall elections. This is a Republican push. Spanish voters generally support Democrats more than Republicans. Is there a need for reform – yes. Is crime up in Arizona as a result of illegal Spanish immigation? No, fact checks actually reveal crime is down due to immigration. Get the real facts. Governor Brewer is telling a few fibs as she pushes this Arizonba immigration reform law. I am causcasian, but will avoid visiting Arizona. I have read the Arizona law, am familiar with legal interpretation of laws. Anyone can be stopped any time police want inquiring about citizenship status. Law is still vague enough for multiple legal interpretations of this law, even with the signed revision amendments in attempt to protect citizens from abuse. Anyone can have legal problems if police are having a bad day or are angry. Arizona police or CHP could keep a person in jail for 5-7 days while checking on your citizenship. This is specifically legal in Arizona under this new law. Folks please look at the whole picture. Republicans have become more a party of just causcasians. That was quite evident at the 2008 presidential national convention. I am a registered Republican and the contrast to the Democratic Presidential National Convention was shocking. I am tired of supporting illegal immigrants to, but this is not the way to do it.

You know, Government, for right wing politics who don't want particularly want Federal Government to be reduced to the size of a postage stamp you have the nerve to blame this President for an immigration 'issue' that your State happily participated in through multiple administrations.

Get off your high horse, get your damn political party of Conservatives and Republicans to work toward common sense solutions instead of constantly exhausting everyone by blocking everything and then accusing others of not doing their job.

And by the way .... wait until no one can get their lawns cared for or their babies minded.

Your past relatives arrived here ... and perhaps BEFORE there were even entry requirements or passports. Get off your high horse and work with rather than blame.

What a guy! He has doubled the "enforcement task forces" and tripled the "intelligence analysts" - when is he going to build a fence and put some boots on the ground? Oh, and checking those SOUTHBOUND trains - that's really helpful to Arizona's problems.

This is part of why people like disciplined soldiers like McChrystal are lipping off....frustration. Not sure it is all our current Presidents fault, doubt that it ever is. And maybe there IS so much wrong that Mr. Obama will never be able to fix it....all. But for a start, the President needs to stop saying "comprehensive" change to every initiative he takes. It is too "Comprehensive". It sounds like you don't really like much of anything about the United States because you are proposing "comprehensive" change to everything. Wall Street, Healthcare, Immigration, Automakers, Insurance, Banking, Housing, everything.

Second, Mr. Biden, stop going around saying we are never going to get the 8 million jobs back. Even if it is a lie.....can you folks give us at least something to hope for? Please? the end of days 2012 nuts sound more promising.

    Just stop scaring us.

Why not have a National 5 bucks a head day each month? Let the President ask each American to go out and spend $5 for each person in their household. Just go for it! Spend some money. Maybe even spend an extra five bucks for a homeless guy you don't know. Our country is more than 60% consumer spending reliant so get the freaking consumers out there spending and stop scaring us.

Hate to say it but the last President Bush was right on. After 9/11 he said the best thing we can do go out and live our lives, don't let the SOB's win. Our current administration seems to keep saying, RUN, HIDE, cuz its gonna get worse. Break out the Band-aids!

    Come on.....lie to me! Please

The first word in "Illegal Immigrant" is Illegal. Not much more to be said. This is an illegal intrusion into United States territory. The armed forces need to be brought in to end this.

AZ and other states directly or indirectly wreeped the benefits of cheap labor via illegal immigrants for decades...translated "encouraged it." Now all of a sudden they are yelling FIRE. Years of not following the the(federal immigration) law to the letter has come to bite this nation in the rear. If the AZ Gov wants to point fingers...look in her own backyard!

I'm not blaming anyone right now... But why is it so hard to secure the border? Send the army down there with the Army Corp of engineers build a fence/wall/minefield... I don't really care..well I'd prefer not a minefield. Evidently somebody in a position of power does not want the border secured for whatever reason.... It's definitley not a money thing either. We have trillions to give to companies because they suck but don't have the money for national security? (Which should be the Governments highest priority) As it stands now all a potential terrorist has to do to get bombs into the country is do as the Mexicans do.

Go after the employers. When there are no employers hiring illegals (and consequently paying no taxes or other state and federal required payments on laborers) then the illegals won't bother coming to your state. This would also add quite a bit of funding to your state coffers in fines. Isn't hiring illegals also illegal? What part of illegal don't you understand? But it's easier and of more political benefit to whine at the President than to take action against the people that fund your campaigns!

what are you doing, Brewer? how many National Guard troops did you mobilize? how many Arizona state police did you hire? or did your Pea Party friends tell you not to hire anyone new because state workers will not be affordable under the Pea Party's stilted views of how government works?

This woman comes out with outlandish comments such as most of those coming over the border are carryng drugs, even though law inforcement folk say otherwise. She has not been pigeon-holded so that others will judge her by the color of her skin. The President is doing the best he can and she didn't address this issue when Bush was President. She is playing politics with the lives of people. I hope she and her type some day will feel the sting of prejudism and then perhaps she will be better equipped to govern.
