Arizona Gov. to Obama: Do your job!

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer says she's not happy with the president's border response.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer says she's not happy with the president's border response.

(CNN) - The same day President Obama is delivering a high profile speech on immigration, a web video is making the rounds featuring a frustrated Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer imploring the president to "do your job" when it comes to securing the borders.

In the web video posted earlier this week, Brewer stands in front of recently erected signs 80 miles from Arizona's Mexican border that warn travelers "smuggling and illegal immigration may be encountered in this area."

"Two weeks ago I met with President Obama, he promised that we would get word from his administration on what they were going to do to secure the border. Well, we finally got the message, these signs," Brewer says. "I'm 80 miles away from the border and only 30 miles away from Arizona's capital. This is an outrage."

"Washington says our border is as safe as it's ever been…Does this look safe to you? Washington is broken, Mr. President," a visibly angry Brewer continues. "Do your job. Secure our borders."

The newly-erected signs are the product of the Bureau of Land Management, according to local TV station KPHO, amid urging from local residents who have witnessed a wave of drug-related crimes.

Brewer's comments come more than a week after a senior Obama administration official confirmed justice department lawyers are planning to file a legal challenge to the controversial Arizona immigration law championed by Brewer.

Federal government lawyers who have been working on the expected challenge for several weeks will most likely file their arguments in federal court in Phoenix in the days leading up to July 28, when the statute is scheduled to take effect, the official said.

Administration officials have indicated the question of Arizona usurping federal authority to control the border and enforce immigration law is the most likely federal point of attack against the state law signed by Gov. Jan Brewer earlier this year.

In his immigration speech Thursday, Obama again took aim at the controversial Arizona measure, calling it "ill conceived."

"It is not just that the law Arizona passed is divisive, though it has fanned the flames of an already contentious debate, laws like Arizona's put huge pressures on local law enforcement to enforce rules that ultimately are unenforceable. It puts pressure on already hard-strapped state and local budgets," Obama said.

The president also defended his efforts to secure the border both with Mexico and Canada.

"We doubled the personnel assigned to border enforcement security task forces," he said. "We tripled the number of intelligence analysts along the border. For the first time we have begun screening 100 percent of southbound rail shipments. And as a result, we're seizing more illegal guns, cash, and drugs than in years past."

"The bottom line is this, the southern border is more secure today than at anytime in the past 20 years," Obama added.

Of course she's 80 miles from the border. She wouldn't dare get any closer. What a awful, awful governor. She'll be gone soon; she's just here temporarily.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't crime at a historically low rate across all jurisdictions and isn't illegal immigration down substantially over what it was as recently as 5 years ago. Now I know that the recession has slowed the illegals but, what is all this crime talk? Historical perspective and facts = kryptonite to reactionary right wingers.

The Governer should make ever effort to stand on the border and keep it safe. I can't think or or remember a president who came to office and within two years had so much problems.
    (a) Two wars began with the Republican administration that made us less safe and waste trillions.
    (b) Before this president was sworn into office, he began receiving hell from the Republicans.
    (c) Even the previous VP made sure he did not stand as was the norm during the swear-in with the chief justice.
    (d) he has received blame foe everything since the great depression and told to walk on water.
    (d) he needs to dive 5000 feet and plug a spill caused by the deregulation of the Republicans. I can go on to "Z" but then we all know Republicans have one mentality and that's hate.

Yet another Republican gimmick aimed at making this great President look bad. Only the weak minded will continue to be fooled. The same people whinning about government being to big and claiming they're taking government back seem to be first in line to question, where is the government when something happens. Why anyone would vote Republican is absolutely insane.

There are 2 reasons the immigration has become such a hot issue. #1 is the recently passed health care bill which essentially gives free healthcare to illegal aliens. Because if they can't afford healthcare it will be provided by the government. #2 The violence and drugs that have permeated the area. It is not about Obama or Bush, it is about our laws that are on the books. Obama says the laws are unenforceable. How is that possible? If you stop someone who you suspect of committing a crime and they are illegal, you turn them over to the Feds. How is that unenforceable? We also need to crack down on the businesses and homeowners who hire illegals to take care of their kids & houses. Pay higher wages or do it yourself.Everyone wants everything for nothing.

18 months in office is plenty long to wait for action on a critical topic that you were voted into office to resolve. Talk certainly is cheap so long as it doesn't cost you a re-election.

Here's what I want to ask Brewer: If you want to get rid of teachers with an accent, does that include European accents e.g. British? Of course she doesn't as long as they are white. Brewer is a racist piece of crap who's using this whole circus as desent of having a black president.

  13. What a political blow hard

Jan, how many terms has McCain been in the Senate? What has he accomplished for you in all this time? Also of the last 30 years, 20 of them have been republican administrations in the white house. You only did this at this time, because the current administration wasnt your own, And if Mr. McCain had been president, and he didnt do anything about it, that would of been ok for you. This whole thing is nothing more then political grandstanding.

What kind of moron President would encourage his people to leave their country? Why doesn't Mexico's President fix the problems over there so his people will stay put. Or is he encouraging all the criminals to move to the USA? Or better yet, is it the "reconquista" where Mexicans are attempting to divide and conquer by occupation? This is an invasion. Go back to Mexico. You wore out your welcome to the U.S. a long time ago.

So, what should the government do about the borders? We have miles and miles of it along the southern and along the northern borders. Provide some specific ideas about how to seal the borders, not just "do your job". Oh, and while the borders are being sealed with fences, walls, and/or armed soldiers every 1200 feet, keep screaming about the government in our lives and getting spending under control.

Why will comprehensive immigration reform be better? What does that term mean?

The first thing we need to do is control our borders. I don't blame Brewer for calling out Obama on this. He is saying he won't secure the border until he gets his "path to citizenship" for illegals. Not smart.

Governor Brewer is a joke. Why wasn't she screaming for the last eight years for the Bush administration to do their job. The fence could have been completed by now. President Obama hasn't been in office two years yet, and yet they expect him to do what they haven't done. I am a Democrat, but I call a spade a spade. This is bull-shit.

Well... I'm not saying I'm in love with the idea of illegal immigrants coming to America in seemingly endless waves. But it seems that the more vocal opponents seem to have an idea that these people just decided to pack their belongings and leave their three bedroom, two bath house and jaunt of to America to make a few extra bucks.
Realistically, these people come from squalor. Meaning no running water or electricity, houses with no roofs or missing walls, and only the clothes on their backs. How can you look a man in the eye and tell him that he can't get food for his family just because he was born on the wrong side of a line. I'm sure we can sit here an argue it's the Mexican governments fault and how they need to create jobs, but I'm sure for a guy living like an animal, trying to get food for a dozen or so family members, and maybe just improve his and their lives, that a political solution is probably far from his mind at the time.

You idiots that make comments. You have no idea what you are taling about. The first comment from Think Again. You do not even know that she has only been Governor for a little obver a year. Janet Neapolitano was governor before she became Secty of Homeland Security. If any of you knew what you were talking about she also encouraged the administration in thepst to dod something. Granted the Republicans and The democrats in the past did nothing. The problem is it is worse than ever before and soemthing has to be done. For Comprehensive Immigration. The border has to be secure. All of you criticixzing the Governor do not live there . Yuor land is not being used by drug runner and illegals. You are not being killed on your own land. Your cities are not being terrozied by drug cartels. Do you even know that the second largest number of kidnappings in the world is in Arizona??? I am tlaking the world you libwerals leftist communists. Wake up and smell the roses.......

It sounds to me that Ol' Gov. Brewer needs to focus more on building up her state, than trying to be racially divided. The USA is a melting pot of all races of people. Who's going to want to stay in AZ. once you show how racist you are?

You are entering a dereliction of duty zone.
Expect nothing good to happen until 2012
