Washington (CNN) - On the day of President Obama's immigration reform speech, several advocacy groups launched a campaign urging Major League Baseball move next summer's All-Star Game from Phoenix.
The 2011 All-Star Game is currently scheduled to take place in Arizona, a state that signed its controversial immigration bill into law this past April. Arizona's immigration law requires immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times and requires police to question people if there's reason suspect they're in the United States illegally. The law also targets businesses that hire illegal immigrant laborers or knowingly transport them.
The campaign, directed at MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, was launched as a joint effort by some civil rights groups such as the National Council of La Raza, Asian American Justice Center, Center for Community Change, League of United Latin American Citizens, and the National Puerto Rican Coalition.
As part of the campaign, a petition has been posted on the website urging those who oppose the law to send a letter not only to Selig but to their favorite baseball team's general manager.
This campaign is urging its supporters to "uphold our nation's diversity," and encourages its supporters to call Selig by posting the MLB's phone number on their site.
The web site said baseball is a game "that transcends all barriers and brings America together, reminding us of what makes us unique: our diversity." The site also said America's favorite pastime "is in danger of losing its reputation," if the game is held in Arizona.
same song over and again. racial profiling, racism, and so on. this is not and it's been said over and again, it is a matter of illegal aliens being in a country that they do not belong nor have a right to be in. i know several people who did come here and did it the right way after waitting what seemed an eternity to do so. and yet, these morons come and demonstrate, we have rights, you do not have rights here. you need to ( as mr president says, wait in line, pay your dues) and so on and on and on. secure our borders and control this influx of illegal aliens and we can all live a more peacefull life.
Only in America do we defend those who ignore our laws. While people protest against Arizona, please note similar laws were enacted two years ago in a Virginia county as well as neighboring Montgomery county. Look at the results....how can anyone argue these? What is so wrong with legal immigration? Our forefathers entered this country legally and assimilated into american life. No longer...illegal immigrants maintain their communities, culture and raise their flag. This is not american! Come to this country to become an american, not for the priviledges that come with residence.
How many of those protesting to move the 2011 All-Star Game form AZ can even afford a ticket to the game. Get a life.
Two-thirds of all American support the Arizona law–moving this game out of Arizona would hurt Arizona not at all but would likely hurt attendance at the game.
La Raza, Asian American Justice Center, Center for Community Change, League of United Latin American Citizens, and the National Puerto Rican Coalition, the era of Politically Correct is dying or dead. Americans have lost patience with your oh-poor-me whining.
The answer is NO NO NO. The people of Az had nothing to do with the law being passed nor should they suffer because of it. This is totally absurd. You want ot boycott something why not CITGO. It is totally owned by Hugo Chavez and look how much he loves America. What would he do without our money buying his oil... Wake up America
If baseball boycotts Arizona, I think the fans should boycott baseball. Illegal individuals should NOT be allowed to stay within the United States. If I would break the law, I would be punished because I am a CITIZEN of the US. When did ILLEGAL individuals get more rights than LEGAL individuals.
hispanics should just boycott the game and you will see how fast MLB will go bankrupt.
Arizona's law is just a reiteration of federal law ... only Arizona has the spine to actually uphold the law and respect the rule of law.
If people are going to boycott Arizona ... then they should boycott the federal government in respect to this issue as well.
Why are all these Organizations supporting Criminal Activity? Dont they understand the Term ILLEGAL. An Illegal immigrant has NO RIGHTS under the US Constitution. They should be deported. I dont see them arguing with the Federal Government for this law, only Arizona who decided it was time to actually do something about the Problem of these Criminals. The United States Government refuses to enforce its own laws so Arizona made it State Law as well and is going to enforce it. The United States, and our idiot president need to Step up and do there job!
Shame on Arizona for wanting people in it's state to be hear legally. What were they thinking?
GO AZ GO. America and Americans stand with you
What about the 88th amendment to the constitution...
You know, the separation of baseball and state.
Give me a break... danger of losing it's reputation? America has lost it's reputation for allowing illegals to knowingly live in our country.. ILLEGALY. What part of that don't these people understand!!
Arizona should not be allowed to host the All-Star game in 2011. If Selig wants to keep the game in AZ, then any Latin American All-Star, or any person of color, or just anybody that sees this as a racist law and state should just stay home. See how that works for you AZ.
Arizona needs to elect a Democrat for Governor and rid themselves of the Senile Senator.
Bull. This is America not Mexico. Get legal or get out!
Boycott all bigots and those who would support them. No more MLB in my house until this is cleared up.
Recorprateans of Arizona need to get real, this is the USA not pre 1940 Germany. We have had enough of the fascist state of Arizona and their corporate welfare.
LOOK at the groups supporting this ridiculous and un-American attempt to intimidate MLB. These people come to this country, either fail to, or never attempt to, assimilate and then expect the rest of us to bend to THEIR traditions instead of accepting the ones that exist here already. DO NOT LET THEM INTIMIDATE YOU. MR. SELIG!! What Arizona has done is to enforce laws that are already on the books!
I suggest they move it to Mexico. Get a visa first.
I agree, they don't deserve any special contests. I wouldn't attend even if I had free tickets. I travel a lot and I am planning all my future trips going around Mcarizona It may cost me a little more but I won't have to put up with their crap. I experienced it when I went to San Diego in April. I was stopped several times and asked if I was an American Citizen. I didn' spend 31 years in uniform so someone can make a mockery of our country.
Bottom line, this is Mexico's fault and they are comfortable knowing their people will cross over to the USA illegally to make a life, they are washing their hands of the responsibility of their citizens.
Mexico needs to clean up its act so its citizens can live normal lives in Mexico and these people should treat our country nicer since they are living here and not in the misery of their country.
Puerto Ricans are Americans, why are they involved instead of asking Mexicans to respect our laws and enter our country legally, with papers, permission????? We can't enter Mexico without permission.
