Strong 2nd quarter for Kirk despite controversies

Mark Kirk's campaign reported 2nd quarter fundraising numbers on Thursday.
Mark Kirk's campaign reported 2nd quarter fundraising numbers on Thursday.

Washington (CNN) - Rep. Mark Kirk, the Republican hoping to capture President Obama's old Senate seat, raised $2.3 million dollars in the 2nd quarter, his campaign said Thursday.

It is the most successful quarter to date for the five-term congressman who apologized recently for mischaracterizing his military record.

The 2nd quarter totals include a more than $1 million haul in month of June, brought in as the controversy over the candidate's military record was unfolding.

"We are humbled by the outpouring of support from families across Illinois," Kirk campaign spokesperson Kirsten Kukowski said in a statement. "With unemployment in Illinois higher than the national average, we need leaders who will turn our economy around and put Illinois back to work."

Despite television buys for two ads that debuted on Wednesday, the campaign reported $3.9 million in cash on hand.

Kirk's Democratic opponent, Illinois state treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, has not yet reported 2nd quarter numbers, but was the beneficiary of a high profile fundraising event headlined by Vice President Joe Biden in June.

Kirk and Giannoulias are seeking the seat currently held by Sen. Roland Burris, who decided not to pursue the Democratic nomination after being appointed to the seat by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

At the beginning of June, two well-respected non-partisan political handicappers rated the race as competitive. The Cook Political Report said the contest leaned Republican, while the Rothenberg Political Report rated the race as toss up/tilt Republican.

No thanks. We don't need another Liar Con-Artist in D.C. that can't be trusted with their own resume, yet alone our $ and rights.

As a veteran who lost his leg in Vietnam, I am outraged at this "stolen valor". I thought that was a crime? What we need are "leaders" who know how to tell the truth. Put any nice name you want to on it, but in my book it's called a "liar". He needs to be prosecuted.

If the people of IL elect this rethuglicant slug than shame on them for being a shining example of the term "idiot Americans".

If they do elect this village idiot I'll move to give IL the prize for "Dumbest Electorate" in the US and take it away from the two that are currently tied for first place – TX & SC...

You have to laugh when the right runs a campaign to discredit a bona-fide war hero like John Kerry, then vote for a draft avioder like Bush and support someone who lies about their military record like Kirk.

    Partisan politics over principles?

    Dennis:
"stolen valor" IS a crime, but there's no evidence that he did that. On his website it listed his military awards, of which there were many, and among them miswrote an aware with a very similar title. His bio said he won "Intelligence Officer of the Year" when he actually won "Intelligence Unit of the Year ". It looks like a perfectly honest mistake to me.

    Lynda/Minnesota
He's running for US senate, not IL state senate. His job is to work on the country, not just IL and you can check his website for his plans.

Mikey... you're just clueless. Bush wasn't a draft-dodger, that was Clinton. Bush served in the national guard and the left wing media used falsified documents to criticize his record. Dan Rather was so ashamed of what he'd been a party to that he resigned. Also Bush was president BEFORE Kerry ran for office. Pretty sad that you can't even get your timeline straight.

Unfortunately for the voters here in Illinois, we all ways have to chose between cantidates that are from Chicago and thier style of politics, and you can see what that has done for us...One former Republican Governor in jail, another (Democrat) on trial and an idiot in the White House who has not lived up to any of his promises.

You cannot trust any individual who lies over their own military background. How this guy could be a politician trying to become a senator? The lack of character of this individual is even 'insulting' to the voters when elections comes. I bet you that Mark Kirk would be elected to senator in November, it happens only in AMerica.

Oh, yes, you Repubs are just full of fresh ideas to turn the economy around, aren't you? Whoops, I didn't think so. If you had any viable solutions other than the same old slogans I'd think they'd have shown up back in '08. We all know your only agenda is to see Obama (America) fail. You simply after power and guess what, you can't have it back! Love it! We're done w/your lies and self-serving agenda. Hey, I heard BP needs a new CEO.

    "...for mischaracterizing his military record..."

It's awfully nice of you in the corporate media to help Kirk by "mischaracterizing" his LIES, not were not mischaracterizations at all.

    Task
He did not win the unit of the year award, he was a small part of the UNIT which Won the Award. He also claimed other non existent honors and awards to the point that the Navy warned him about such statements. But that's ok with the GOP because he's a republican, we all know what the GOP would be saying if he were a democrat. Time to be honest.

Bush was not a draft dodger, he was however a draft avoider. Anyone who was around at that time of draft age which obviously you were not, knows that the guard was extremely hard to get into without having some juice behind you. Then once in he seemed to have missed quite a lot of time. Hardly serving with true honor.

Vote NO in NOvember to the party of NO.

As an Illinois voter, this another case of Illinois politics where the choice is the lesser of two evils. Alex G. is no picnic but Kirk is a waste. Has anyone posting seen his commercials? They say nothing about what his position is on anything. They just hammer Alex G. on his family's failed bank. No one knows what he stands for and he really isn't saying because he is too busy ducking the media around the state of Illinois.

Speaking as an Illinois independent voter, I can tell you that Kirk's verbal and written mistakes do matter. His written mistakes especially matter to me because he had a lot of time to check that stuff. If he is that careless with the truth this early in the game what else is he careless with?

Yes, you can say that Alex G. is connected with bad loans at a failed family bank. Was he the only person at that bank that had decision making powers? I don't thinks so. Besides, he has been a pretty effective treasurer since he got into office.
