Liz Cheney calls for Steele's resignation

RNC Chairman Michael Steele is facing another call to resign.
RNC Chairman Michael Steele is facing another call to resign.

Washington (CNN) - Another prominent conservative is asking Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele to resign, calling his comments on the war in Afghanistan "deeply disappointing and wrong."

Liz Cheney, a former State Department official and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said in a statement released Saturday that Steele must go.

"RNC Chairman Michael Steele's comments about the war in Afghanistan were deeply disappointing and wrong," Cheney said. "The chairman of the Republican party must be unwavering in his support for American victory in the war on terror – a victory that cannot be accomplished if we do not prevail in Afghanistan. I endorse fully Bill Kristol's letter to Chairman Steele. It is time for Chairman Steele to step down."

Cheney, a founding member of Keep America Safe, a conservative advocacy group focused on national security and foreign policy issues, is not the first to call for Steele's resignation. On Friday, influential conservative and editor of the Weekly Standard William Kristol called on Steele to step down.

Kristol was joined by former South Carolina GOP chairman Katon Dawson, who finished second to Michael Steele in the Republican National Committee chairman's race last year, and also called on the committee to oust their embattled chairman.

The controversy was sparked by Steele's comments made at a Republican fundraiser in Connecticut Thursday. A YouTube video shows the RNC chairman declaring of the war in Afghanistan, "This was a war of Obama's choosing."

"This is not something the United States actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in," he added.

That statement is at odds with the fact the United States led a NATO coalition with overwhelming public support to invade Afghanistan in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

Steele also appeared to suggest any conflict in Afghanistan may be unwinnable.

On Friday, the RNC defended Steele.

"The Chairman clearly supports our troops but believes that success of the war effort in Afghanistan requires the ongoing support of the American people," RNC Communications Director Doug Heye said.

And late Friday afternoon, Steele issued his own statement on the matter, saying that "During the 2008 Presidential campaign, Barack Obama made clear his belief that we should not fight in Iraq, but instead concentrate on Afghanistan. Now, as President, he has indeed shifted his focus to this region. That means this is his strategy. And, for the sake of the security of the free world, our country must give our troops the support necessary to win this war," Steele said.

"As we have learned throughout history, winning a war in Afghanistan is a difficult task. We must also remember that after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, it is also a necessary one. That is why I supported the decision to increase our troop force and, like the entire United States Senate, I support General Petraeus' confirmation. The stakes are too high for us to accept anything but success in Afghanistan."

I believe Liz Cheney and William Kristol have two major problems with Michael Steele:

    #1 He's a black man.

#2 He's not a militaristic imperialist who believes that the U.S. should dominate and control the world with our military.

I'd love to see Steele out just to get his useless opinions out of the news.

And Cheney, just like her corrupt old man, needs to resign from the human race.

Steele, when you don't have anything intelligent to say, it's OK to be quiet. Don't talk just because you have a mouth...

As far as an official state department employee we all know where that came from and the mediocracy of that position and performance.

The Republicans need to rewrite history and blame democrats for starting both the wars. It wasnt Bush and Dick who were started the war, it was purely pressure from the Democrats that Forced them to start the war. They went overboard to even start a second war in Iraq.Saddam had nothing to do with anything against the US,except protect his own interest and remain in power. Dick totally abused the constitution and ruled worst then Saddam. Imagine the VP saying that he is not answerable to the US Congress and refusing to hand over documents for investigation ,time and again. Closed door meetings with the Oil companies !!! Republicans, wake up,Its stupid to think that only the people who listen to Hannity are GREAT AMERICANS.Imagine how bad the party is when the party is controlled by Couch Potatoes "TALK SHOW HOST".Its unfortunate. Just because they are blessed by the Gift of the Gab,they think they are something. You donot lose a WAR just by withdrawing the troops, you win wars by Winning the hearts of the common man.I am willing to bet that even after 50 YEARS, the situation will remain the same. Americans do not have idea of the thousands of years violent history of Muslim Nations.

Michael Steele made some very stupid and wrong
comments and he is now covering his butt.

This was not a war of President Obamas choosing.
We went into Afghanistan before Iraq,
    under George Bush.

    Any lie to attack Obama.

Steele is an idiot in the same mold as Palin. They are a joke that continues to wreck havoc to the party. The country deserves a better opposition and that's not going to happen if this nimcompoop heads the GOP.

Liz Cheney needs to resign from public speaking and the political process in this country. If this woman ever managed to acquire any power at all the entire world would be in danger. She's a brutish ideologue who doesn't have a pragmatic, empathetic bone in her body. Just like her father.

Is she a chip off the old block or not. I agree Steele is a disaster and embaressment to the GOP; however, Liz is only perpetuating what her evil old father says. Hopefully the next heart attack will take him to the gates of hell.

The American people elected Mr. Obama mainly to end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Neither war is Mr. Obama's war. Both wars were Mr. Bushe's wars, as the fiasco with Katrina was Mr. Bushe's fiasco, and the BP fiasco is Mr. Obama's fiasco.

Mr. Steele has continually shown a lack of professionalism while serving in his post as a leader of the GOP, I agree is is time for him to seek another job outside of the Republican Party.

Who cares what the daughters of any of these politicians think (Cheney, McCain, Kennedy, Palin)? Just because their daddy or mommy are politicians does not give them any credibility or additional insight. It's like getting political advice from Barbara Streisand. Totally worthless.

Amazing! The man is totally incompetent and incoherent. Not only is his original statement factually incorrect, but his statement following the RNC's misleading defense of his statement is typical political double-speak that says nothing and does not even address the subject. Remember, isn't this the man who was recently caught spending large amounts of campaign contributions for his own personal excesses and travel junkets. Isn't enough enough? The man is too stupid to not be considered a menace to society and should do everyone a favor and just leave the planet.
