Senators: Iraq needs new government soon

Sens. McCain, Lieberman and Graham are in Iraq.

(CNN) – A delegation of U.S. senators on a visit to Iraq said they were impressed with the progress the country has made over the past few years, but urged political factions to form a new government soon.

Senators John McCain, R-Arizona, Joe Lieberman, I-Connecticut, and Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, spoke to reporters at a news conference during their visit Saturday.

Vice President Joe Biden also arrived in Iraq Saturday to celeberate the July 4 holiday with U.S. troops.

"Baghdad to us now is a very different city than when we first came here," Lieberman said. "It's thriving, it's clean, there's growth going on, it's great to see."

McCain echoed those sentiments, noting that the delegation was able to walk through downtown Baghdad to a bakery.

Graham added, "What's happened in three years is amazing."

The U.S. senators also pressed Iraqi politicians to select a new government. Elections were held in March, where former Prime Minister's Ayad Allawi's bloc slightly edged out a bloc led by current Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. The newly sworn in Iraqi parliament has begun negotiations to choose a new government, including a new prime minister, but the process has been slow.

A new government should be selected that reflects the election results and the will of the Iraqi people, McCain said. Hopefully the negotiations will provide results as soon as possible, he said.

Graham honored the American troops and Iraqi troops who lost their lives in the war.

"The Iraqi people have suffered for their own freedom," he said.

We should remember that the Founding Fathers didn't create "democracy" ... they gave Americans the tools they needed to make our country a democracy ...

We have given, with American blood and treasure, Iraq the tools it needs. Now the job is up to the people of Iraq: to embrace or form their government to match their culture.

Heard much the same from McCain when campaigning ... walking around with his flack jacket & 100's of soldiers, pretending how safe Baghdad was ... with the helicopters just out of sight ...

Likely as not they will select a leader with close ties to Iraq, but the country may still be safe enough for the Chinese to get oil from.

We're stuck with the dead troops and huge debt from the war, and more and stronger enemies; China gets the resources. Thanks, W & dick.

But as soon as we leave, and I hope that is soon, the whole thing will fall apart due to ethnic and religous diferences. We created a mess and have and will be paying for it for along time. Trillions will be spent and thousands of lives, American lives, wasted because of one man. Not Saddam, but bush!

    Losers three.
Lieberman is a real loser. He, along with most of the cronyism group, have no interest in fulfilling their campaign promises. If they don't do good with one party label they jump ship to another.
It's not at all about serving the voters but more about serving themselves.
    Damn, I hat politicians!
    Money grabbing liars and misfits.

First of all, these three over the hill guys telling another country what to do is hilarious. One a brave POW but never led in troops much less a country. Liberman the Jew to tell a Muslim country their needs for a government. Graham the military pretender...more of a wanna be soldier than a reality.

Second of all, did they leave the green zone? Old men just trying to appear more than they are in hopes of gaining votes.

3 old guys who need to retire and take a cruise vs pretending they have any real value in Iraq.

So what else is new? Iraq is only a small fraction of the mess that Afghanistan is, but neither "country" (if that is even the right word) can be governed by a central government. Unless we want to occupy them forever, they both will revert to tribal and/or lawless power centers. Both were and are US military and foreign policy mistakes. In 2012 I am voting for a Presidential candidate who promises to get us out–no kidding! Then I'll do it again in 2016 and 2020 and . . .

America needs to understand that we can't MAKE Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan or Al Quaeda do anything. We are nine years into Bush's war and neither country seems all that inclined to follow our lead. They just want us gone.

And Willy Brown, why don't you go to any one of these countries to see how you like the leadership there. All you do is whine and complain about President Obama. Turn off Rush & Company, step outside into the sunshine and refresh you soul. Have a nice day.

After having a direct hand in creating the disaster of the Iraq War, that so far has cost + 4000 American lives, + 10,000 American wounded, many beyond repair, and an American economic emergency, Larry, Moe and Curly Joe visit Baghdad. Larry still claims he can walk down a Baghdad street to the bakery like it is Phoenix, Tucson, or whatever, while car bombs still go off regularly and kill people, including Americans. If you can select Palin for your V-P candidate with a straight face, I guess any idiotic statement may come from your mouth.

These people should be shunned and disgarded to the scrap heap of History. We Americans are on the edge of economic collapse because of the policies of the Party that claims two of them, while no Party will claim the third one. They have done enough damage.

Joe Lieberman and John McCain maybe should stay in Iraq and start their own government. That way McCain can have his own little smack down war with anybody he chooses. He could also add house number 8 to the list too.
