(CNN) – Bristol Palin’s former fiance publicly apologized to her family Tuesday in a statement to PEOPLE magazine, saying that some of his comments about the Palin family made in the wake of the 2008 presidential campaign are not totally true.
Levi Johnston, the father of Bristol’s son, Tripp, was thrust into the spotlight when former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen to be the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate.
But his relationship with the Palin family became strained after his engagement to Bristol ended, and he embarked on a series of high-profile media interviews in which he criticized the Palin family.
Now, Johnston appears to be trying to mend the relationship.
"Last year, after Bristol and I broke up, I was unhappy and a little angry. Unfortunately, against my better judgment, I publicly said things about the Palins that were not completely true," Johnston told CNN’s sister publication PEOPLE Magazine. "I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah. Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize."
During the GOP's 2008 national convention in Minneapolis, Palin revealed that Bristol, then 17 years old, was pregnant with Johnston's baby and the two had plans to marry.
Following the election, Johnston appeared in Playgirl Magazine, and said on “The Tyra Banks Show” that he and Bristol had been allowed to live together, a charge the Palin camp denied.

Wonder how much they paid him?
Withholding Bark finally got to him
How much did Palin pay him to say that do you think? Palin and her whole family are trash. It's not surprising that republicans find them so attractive.
It looks like the "mama grizzly" sow finally earned enough cash to pay for this "apololgy".
Flip
Flop
(it's not called a lie in the Palin circles – he just changed his mind).
Stupid breeds more stupidity. What a dunce.
Levi has grown up. The 2008 campaign was a bad time for the Palin family, one that should have handled privately by Sarah Palin turning down McCain in favor of her daughter, who needed her so much more. It was all just so ugly. Have a good life Levi and Bristol whatever you do. You made mistakes because you are young, but you will be fine.
Hmmmm, I see an impending slander suit demanding he retract statements? But I only see retreating not retracting.
Levi Johnston is a nasty, infantile young man who has never learned that you can't put the genie back in the bottle. Now, for some reason known only to himself, after making a tremendous effort to completely destroy a family, he tries to make up for his nastiness and his lies with an apology. Take a hike, Punk.
A lot of people should publicly apologize to the Palin Family. Especially mean-spirited liberals and mainstream media losers like Keith Obermann and Rachael Maddow!
A card laid is a card played.
There you go, Sarah and Todd. A boy might say things off the cuff when he's angry, but a man takes responsibility for what he says. I hope you focus on encouraging Levi and Bristol to be their best, for the sake of your grandson, and leave out the politics.
will this long national nightmare never end?
Where is our apology from Sarah Palin?
Why is this under "Politics?" Please CNN, in the future, put any Palin family articles under "Entertainment." Thank you in advance.
He's sooooo cute!
Can we PLEASE stop talking about the Palin family, Sarah Palin, Tripp, Bristol, their dog, Alaska????? PLEASE!
Levi was about to get the boom lowered on him, make the statement or face Palin's rath
others before him have suffered, he knew to get out now
sarah must have given the poor boy some of her empty head hahaha
Sarah is planning to run for President. This is damage control. I bet he was paid to do this. He and Bristol will make up and make nice... just in time for the 2012 election....
Don't worry Levi, they all owe you a MUCH bigger apology... that unfortunately, you will never get from any of them! Sarah Palin is the biggest user of them all... and we ALL know how she controls that family! Try to enjoy your son and go on with your life as best as you can Levi! You don't need any of the rest!
how much did he get paid to issue that statement?
Sure, now that the Palins are rich, it's time to try to make up!
He is a better man and father than I thought he was.
Don't believe him. I think Palin paid him off.
