Washington (CNN) - Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis has been chosen as the new head of the U.S. Central Command, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Thursday.
Mattis replaces Gen. David Petraeus, who was recently tapped by President Barack Obama to head the military campaign in Afghanistan.

One of the best military thinkers and planners of our time – a master at counterinsurgency. Brilliant and disciplined. I served under General Mattis in Iraq and know our troops will be well-guided.
No better friend, no worse enemy.
