(CNN) – National Democrats are out with a new strategy to gin up enthusiasm among members of the base and line their campaign coffers, warning supporters that the party is likely to be significantly outspent by Republican groups this election cycle.
The memo – sent to Democratic activists and fundraisers around the country – says Republican-supporting groups are likely to spend more than $300 million leading up to the midterm elections – a total, Democrats say, that dwarfs previous midterm election spending.
The memo identifies 14 organizations estimated to spend $500,000 or more this election cycle. Topping the list is the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which Democrats say aims to spend $75 million this year. Also on the list is the Karl Rove-backed American Crossroads, which Democrats warn will spend $52 million. Other groups on the list include the fiscally conservative Club for Growth and FreedomWorks - the group led by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey that has offered organizational support to the Tea Party movement.
Of course, Democrats are not without their own powerful third-party organizations, including a string of unions that have already spent heavily. The Democratic committees have also either kept pace or surpassed the fundraising efforts of their Republican counterparts this year. But in a year that appears ominous for the incumbent party, Democrats may be wary of getting caught with empty pockets come the fall.
Unfortunately...money speaks and maybe the downfall of the US. Money spoke in the Bush years and may very well speak again with the next republican adm with the new supreme court ruling, if they win. Us middle class people are doomed and the people that are leaning right are not thinking past the length of their nose.
No offense but what have you DEMS done for the base that worked so hard to get you elected? Atleast the GOP acts to be working for their base/donors. The jobs market is dying and Obama has covered himself with the likes of Rahm corporatives and the jobs continue to be outsourced away. A bad health insurance bill in tandem with a extremely weak financial reform does not add to any motivations. I would like to vote for you again but the motivations just aren't there. Perhaps you can clone Rahm and send him out to campaign for you because I will not be going door to door again for any Dems again.
I find this need to spend money to win an election a bad sign. We need to work towards a time where candidates can talk to other people and spread their ideas without having to raise lots of money. Money is polluting our election process.
Since the start of this administration, the republicans have stood with wall street, big banks, the health insurance industry, and big oil – not the best interests of the American people. The fact that they have been collaborating with wall street and big business and the oil industry – who are all pretty well looked at by the American people as the scourge of our nation – can easily be used during election season. It gives factual evidence to a growing problem – the desire for republicans to finish the corporatization of this country. Their platform of big business first, American citizens...screw yourselves isn't exactly a winning strategy.
I'm sure unions bailed out by the obummer administration will spend hundreds of millions in this election cycle.
The reason they are raising and spending so much money is that TRUE AMERICANs are donating for a change away from the economic and social ruin the democrats have been leading us into. The Democrats have controlled the House since 2007 and that is where most spending bills are written. Bush was sounding the warnings as early as 2006 but was not heeded.
This is a Democrat spending mess and it is continuing and the fear of what is to come is killing any chance of a real recovery. The Democrats have got to go.
375 mill. to get elected thats money both partys can use to pass unumployment and win the vote the right way. hello its 3 mill without that can make a diffence
> > > Must be election time for the GOP.
DNC = Lies
Liberals are constantly lying. RNC does too but not to the same degree.
SO FAR – Everything Obama and company said would save money has or is going to cost the taxpayer twice as much. Do yu think this was a simple mistake? No a chance.
Now they are pushing climate bill saying it will save money..... Again, the CBO is endorsing it, again it will cost 2-3 times as much and they already know it. But they can't tell you that.
They should be put in prison for lying the the American people. Even their own party is being lied to.
Just getting really hard to care at this point. The Republicans win, and we get screwed. The Democrats win, and we get screwed. Meanwhile, the vast majority of people STILL won't vote for a third party because they think it's a "waste" of a vote?
LOL. Your votes have been wasted for decades on these clowns. Vote for somebody, ANYBODY else.
Well both parties spend, but where Democrats want to spend money on healthcare, schools, a safety net unemployment, Republicans want to spend money on wars, weapons and oil (just as Jesus did)...
....OH WAIT A MINUTE, JESUS HEALED THE SICK AND FED THE POOR
I guess so, now that the Supreme Court's conservative activist judges have given corporations the "right to life".
I assume these new "people" have also been baptized into the "christian" faith, and the neo-cons will expect the corporations "tithes" to at least be 10% of corporate earnings, and laid on the alter for the con's true god, MONEY..
Wise up Dems, it takes $$$ to win elections most of the time. You'll have to do the same to keep the seats.
The Democrats need to increase their base of wealthy donor groups to outpace the greed monger party. Republicans want to have a Plutocracy, Aristocracy and Theocracy at the same time: rule by the elite, wealthy class that is based on a very twisted version of christianity, which is the idea that God wants everyone to be wealthy and getting there is left to people in power who can use military might to achieve that goal.
Maybe the BP oil spill is what America needs right now and more. It was proven time and time again that when voters allow Republicans to hold the reigns of power and don't keep them in check, America falters and drops to her knees in weakness. Yet the Republicans NEVER REPENT for their actions even when America and the world suffers as a direct consequence.
The GOP is lacking something that 1/3 Trillion dollars can't buy: a plan for governing.
Why not look at Democrat's spending of OUR money instead. That is the travesty here and not Republican fundraising.
If Dems are so concerned about how money is spent they should start with the taxpayer money they are entrusted with and begint to spend that wisely first.
Same goes for Repubs. Bush spent way too much money in eight years. Obama seems to have surpassed that number though in only two.
Dems are as lost as Dr. Smith and Will Robinson.
Oh dear! Oh dear! We are lost. Oh dear.
