Palin endorsement shakes up Georgia race

Georgia gubernatorial candidate John Oxendine is out with a new ad on Tuesday.
Georgia gubernatorial candidate John Oxendine is out with a new ad on Tuesday.

(CNN) – Sarah Palin waded into the Georgia governor's race Monday and already that contest is growing more intense.

Less than a day after the former Alaska governor announced she is backing former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel, a GOP opponent is out with a scathing campaign commercial that suggests Handel once supported abortion rights.

"She gave almost a half-million dollars to an abortion provider. And supported tax-payer benefits for gay couples. Sounds like a liberal Democrat. It's the Karen Handel you didn't know," says a new ad from John Oxendine, the state insurance commissioner who is considered the frontrunner in the race.

Specifically, the ad says that when Handel was chairman of the Fulton County Commission in 2005 she voted in favor of a $425,568 allocation for Planned Parenthood.

Former Rep. Nathan Deal and former state Sen. Eric Johnson are also running for GOP gubernatorial nomination.

The primary is set for July 20 with a runoff scheduled on August 10 if no candidate garners more than 50 percent of the vote. The current governor of Georgia, Republican Sonny Perdue, has served in that post since 2003 and is term-limited from running for reelection.

"In a posting on her Facebook page Monday, Palin called Handel a reformer who will "strengthen…families, businesses, state and, ultimately, our United States."

"Though considered an underdog candidate (more power to her!), this pro-life, pro-Constitutionalist with a can-do attitude and a record of fighting for ethics in government is ready to serve in the Governor's Office. She'll balance budgets and help spur Georgia's economy," Palin also wrote.

I find it interesting that Sarah Palin continues to support the 'woman' in the race no matter if her views are consistent to Sarah Palin's. In this case they are not based on Palin's history. Sarah Palin is such a phony.

Does this demonstrate again that Palin just runs on at the mouth without intelligence?

Sounds like a good person. Supporting the freedom of people in this country. I'm a registered Republican, and I can't stand Sarah Palin - I'm pro-choice on abortion and have no problem with gay people being able to marry each other. I'm also pro-military spending, for the freedom of religion, and for not condemning people because they don't have the same beliefs as you. Go away Sarah Palin.

Sorry John, what you attempt to demonize Democrats by trying to equate it to a dirt word, just remember that the public is recognizing that it's the Democrats who are bailing your sorry butt out the the mess created by your party's failed policies.

And by the way, want to balance the budget, something your party was not very good at starting with Ronald Regan and continuing through two Bush's, here is a great idea. Stop funding the MILITARY MACHINE. Stop funding BIG BUSINESS. Stop funding YOUR special interest groups.

This proves that Palin is a Democratic plant. She is working secretly for Democrats so that only hard right, tea party conservatives (who will not be able to get the independent voters in the general election) and closet liberals (who will lose the Republican voters once their true views- not liberal enough for Democrats, not conservative enough for Republicans- are exposed by their Democratic opponents) will win in the primary, and they will be sitting ducks in the general election.

Can you imagine how the political landscape might look today if McCain had picked someone like Romney for his VP? He still might not have won, but the spectre of what is Palin would not have been let loose upon our country.

Politicians, the media and other entities should be encouraging people to think critically . . .rather than encouraging them to be partisan (for the sake of being partisan).

Palin is a dim-wit, as well as being a very dangerous influence for the country – we should be examining why our educational system lags those of most other industrialized nations, rather than distracting people with these STUPID contests to see who is the biggest extremist!

What does "pro-Constitutionalist" mean? I love how these repubs try to corner the market on themes like "freedom", "god" and the "Constitution" as if those who are not hard right hate them. I guess I have to give her credit for using a capital "C" in Constitution.

Very important to have the endorsement of someone who could not even finish out her own term as Governor.

This is incredible, Sarah Palin has turned out to be the most divisive and disruptive force to EVER get involved in American politics.....

John McCain unleashed a MONSTER, I want to know if we can bring John McCain up on charges of TREASON for giving birth to this dispicable woman we have come to know as Sarah Palin.

Palin, the kiss of death to any candidate. Are we sure that every republican is against a woman's choice to do what she will with her body?

Oh brother, Palin is out there handing out her endorsements without even knowing anything about the people she's endorsing or the states they're running in. Another example of Palin's utter stupidity and the fact that her admirers are willing to ignore all of the evidence that she is totally unfit to comment about or endorse any politician. Of course, they did this through the entire presidential campaign, too. It doesn't matter how much of an idiot Sarah Palin proves herself to be, her followers would jump off a cliff for her.

By the way, Handel sounds like a good candidate....

Know what I find absolutely amusingly stupid? They like to throw out the term "liberal democrat" like it's some kind of insult. You just have to stare at them and wonder if that's the best they can do - calling someone a name that isn't an insult even though they think it is - how in the world could any of those would-be name callers be effective as an elected official?

I guess Oxendine isn't fit for the job.
We already know that Palin isn't fit for any job.

OH GOOD! I am glad Palin backed someone she knows NOTHING about, but paid her well! NOW, not only does this make Palin look like an idiot, but her endorsement might get the left leaning Republican elected! YAY! I LOVE IT!

Right...because supporting Planned Parenthood (which prevents FAR more abortions than it provides) makes you a liberal democrat, and a bad person.

Supporting gay rights is not an absolutely liberal agenda. It's keeping the government out of our business. The federal government is telling me who I can marry??? Telling me the "definition" of marriage??? Next are they going to tell me that my marriage is invalid because we don't have children? That's what marriage is for, in the biblical sense.

I live in Georgia. Although I don't plan on voting for Karen Handel, I certainly won't vote for John Oxendine. Sleazy campaigns can only mean a sleazy term in office.

I always fail to understand why anyone in a state would listen to recommendations from outside the state on who to vote for governor. What business is it of anyone outside the state? Do they have a vested interest on who is governor? If so, then I would take a very close look at that candidate and whether they are serving my interests or someone else's. BTW Planned Parenthood is much more than just abortions. They do health screenings for the poor. Many sites don't offer abortion. Personally, I think it's too bad that Palin's children didn't avail themselves to Planned Parenthood's education of prevention of pregnancy.

I think Georgia is the key word here...Isn't it strange that it's usually about other people's rights...... that they are against....
We can only hope that the Republicans start to devour their own...They usually do.....let's just hope they still can, with Tea Party help....
