Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama's approval rating on how he is handling the economy is at an all time low, according to two new polls.
Four in ten Americans questioned in a CBS News survey, released Tuesday morning, approve of the job the president's doing on the economy, down five points from last month, and the lowest number since Obama took over in the White House. Fifty-four percent say they disapprove how Obama's dealing with the economy. Only 35 percent of independent voters give the president a thumbs up on the economy. According to the survey, three in four think the effects of the recession will last for another two years, or more.
According to the other new poll, an ABC News/Washington Post survey, 43 percent of the public say they approve of how Obama is handling the economy, down seven points from June, with 54 percent saying they disapprove. The 43 percent figure is a new low in ABC News/Washington Post polling.
"Obama's track record on the economy has been an Achilles heel for him almost since Day One," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Even during the honeymoon period, when he got good grades on virtually every issue, his approval rating on the economy lagged behind his rating on many other issues."
Nearly six in ten questioned in the ABC News/Washington Post poll say they have little or no faith that the president will make the right decisions for the country. But that number rises to 68 percent for those lacking faith in the Democrats in Congress and 72 percent say they have little or no faith in Congressional Republicans to make the right decisions.
The release of the two polls comes less than four months from the November midterm elections, when the Democrats will be defending their large majorities in the House and Senate. They will also seek to keep control of a majority of the governorships.
Just 26 percent of registered voters say they will most likely support their current lawmaker in the House, with more than six in ten saying they may look for someone new to represent them in Congress. A slim majority questioned in the poll say they would prefer GOP control of Congress so that the legislative branch would be able to keep in check the Democratic president. Among those likely to vote in the midterm elections, the margin of those preferring a Republican controlled Congress jumps to 15 points.
The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted July 7-11, with 1,288 adults questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. The CBS News Poll was conducted July 9-12, with 966 adults questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.
It was only a matter of time before the majority in this country realized that when you elect a Community Organizer without any leadership experience you end up with an incompetent president without any leadership experience!!
His only economic training is the warped left socialist policies that do nothing but kill economic growth. Remember, FDR tried the "New Deal" policies and actually PUSHED the country into a depression that lasted 10 years. And Obama believes MORE policies like the ones FDR did would ACTUALLY be a good thing? Simply confirms he has never taken (or at least passed) a real Economics class. If we don't stop this fool soon we will have an economic callapse that will make the great depression look like a picnic..........
Elect an incompetent man as president and what do you get? An incompetent man as president.
Elect a Republicans and repeat another 8 years like the last 8 years you got with ole GW Bush.. Repeal medicare.. social security invest in the stock market.. and repeal the new health insurance LAW.. you get the works folks just vote Republican..This time take the USA Economy all theay down and out.. Why not require Wall Streeters and the Health Insurance lobby to be barefoot for a day in honor of the barefoot bandit jus caught.. He had more spunk than the Wall streeters high life robbing the USA of their pensions etc... doncha think?..Wall Street and the private Health Insurance lobby government..... the real barefoot people who loot us everyday of the year......and get bailed out ..by the USA government to save the country......
I'm sure it pains CNN to report on these polls, but finally, the American people are waking up and realizing that we elected an empty suit for president. The Obama administration STILL blames Bush for everything and won't own anything. The democrats assumed power in 2007 and as soon as they did, the economy started going south. They promised transparency, but have given us nothing more than a bad economy and sweetheart-backroom deals and bigger government. And watch out, everyone's taxes are going up next year. It's time for real change in November and I hope we as Americans send Barack Hussein Obama (mmmm, mmmmm, mmmmm) a clear message.
He has created an artificual economy that will go down like dominos
No jobs. The recovery will take place with out his help a lot quicker.
step aside and go find a good book Mr pres.
Dear Liberal CNN:
Tell it like it is: 60% do NOT approve of Obama. You're trying to sugarcoat the fact by stating how many approve.
Because He, Obama, and the Congress have done NOTHING to reign in or stop OUTSOURCING of Jobs, the ONLY way to put Americans back to work for Americans in the U.S. is stop this outsourcing.
American corporations making Billions because they pay their Asian workers pennies instead of dollars.
I guess we just feel so bad about taking more money from the ultra rich in this country.
How's that hopey, changey, thing working out for ya?
The economy won't improve until this administration figures out who supplies the jobs! It's business! Spend $200 billion on give aways, and $30 billion on small business incentives, makes no sense!
Keep scaring and threatening the business community, remain mute on the Bush tax cuts, and the economy will continue to remain stagnant. Last month, of the aprox 100,000 new jobs, 1/4 – 1/3 were permanent government jobs. This means that of the non-government new hires, every 3-4 would have to fully support 1 govt. job, for the country to break even. Since the govt. jobs, are considerably more expensive to maintain, than the private job workers can afford to pay in, this does not happen! Which means we all lost ground again!
You spend your way INTO bankruptcy! Not OUT of it!
Interesting that CBS and ABC admit, publically, to their polling that shows Obama is closing in on failing. When will NBC join in and recognize that the country is ahead of the national media in recognizing the inadequacies of Obama and his clan.
I don't know that we've ever had a president that pushed all the right economic buttons. For decades, peopel who live and breathe economics have differed on what exactly get an economy going. In this country, we often expect to much of a single person without knowing what really is needed to get something done.
More people should be educated about what is slowing job growth down so they can vent their disapproval in the right direction. Banks are not lending to small businesses and it's those business that account for most of the new job creation. Small business did not cause the economic meltdown, but still suffer even after big banks got their money for the taxpayer.
Looks like one more step has been removed from the trickle down economy such that money does not make it to the most productive part of our economy - small business. Why don't they do a poll on that?
I do not put the total blame on the President but rather put most of it on congress and the senate, especially the republicans as they have made up their minds that they will not support Obama and will set up as many roadblocks as possible for him to do anything. I am sick at heart by the outright hatred shown for Obama, by both republicans and some democrats. How can Obama get anything done when the repubs want him to personally fail.
Welp I can really see why. It's another jobless recovery brought to you by the big corp political machine. Maybie we need to LEAN congress and the senate. Lets see if they like seeing their jobs going to save a few bucks to balance the budget. Congress is outdated in todays tech advancements. Any set of voters can now let their own votes be done online with info on each bill that can be downloaded in a matter of minutes. All the money we could save by not having to do campains and that would take big bussness totally out of the mix and not to mention speicial interest groups as well. All these so called representives are in Big Corps and special intersts pockets instead of representing the people and that indeed means a very tuff time for the american worker.
If they really wanted to work in getting things under control then maybie they should let it be that you have to be in puplic service for at least 12 years to get life time benifets instead of us footing the bill for one timers.
Give me a break – he has been working hard on the economy. What's with people? The Republicans have no idea how to deal with this economy. Just lower taxes they say for the rich.
obama dosen't have a clue how to run this country, what a looser, he wants to turn this country into a socialist dictatorship, with all of the corruption in the w.h. and in the justice department, all of those communist and socialist people that he has around him,the people have had enough, he should either resign or be impeached before he ruins this country beyond repair !
He doesn't know how to handle the economy...he's a community organizer who only understands spend, spend and spend some more. Obama is anti business and every business knows it, his little token attempts are all TEMPORARY and his policies are long term job killers.....and he is so clueless he doesn't understand why jobs go over seas!
What a shock?
Increased Taxes and Fees
Amnesty for Illegals
Reverse Discrimination (ie, racist)
And you wonder why this BOZO is unpopular
