Washington (CNN) – Incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, holds a significant cash advantage over Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, according to financial reports released Thursday by both campaigns.
Boxer raised $4.6 million during the second quarter of 2010, and has $11.3 million cash on hand, her campaign said Thursday in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Fiorina campaign said it has $950,000 cash on hand, a deficit it acknowledged.
"There's no denying that we're starting, and will probably continue to be, at a significant cash disadvantage to Boxer: we went through a tough and expensive primary and have only had a few weeks of raising cash for the general while Boxer has been stockpiling funds for 6 years," the campaign said in a release.
The financial report is the first to be filed since Fiorina emerged the winner of a contentious and expensive Republican primary that culminated on June 8.
But, in a sign Republicans are rallying behind their candidate, Fiorina raised a robust $1.4 million dollars in the last six weeks of the 2nd quarter, according to her campaign.
According to the last report filed with the Federal Election Commission, Fiorina brought in $896,833 in the first half of the 2nd quarter, which means the Republican raised a total of $2.28 million in the 2nd quarter, roughly half of Boxer's haul over the same period.
And while Boxer holds a significant cash advantage, other indicators reveal the matchup to be a much closer race.
According to a Field Poll released one week ago, 47 percent of California voters say they support Boxer, with 44 percent saying they back Fiorina, and nine percent undecided. Boxer's three point advantage is within the survey's sampling error.
And on Thursday, the non-partisan Cook Political Report, a well-respected handicapper, moved the race from the "lean Democratic" column into the "toss-up" column.
Fiorina, the ex-CEO of Hewlett Packard, had loaned her own campaign $5.5 million in advance of the primary, but her campaign noted Thursday that she has made no loans since her victory in that contest.

boxer is out-punching iCarly in almost every way. no matter what happens to the democrats nationwide this november, boxer will still return to the senate
If Californians are stupid enough to vote Fiorina in they deserve her. Like her or not Boxer has been good to california and her people. She cares about the state and the enviornment. You all seem to think a fired CEO has some credability. You need another repo like you need a hole in the head.
don't get you repos. Boxer Finestien pelosi three very tough and intellegnet women who have fought harde to get where they are and along the way passed some very good legislation. These lady's you make fun of. But Palin a total idiot you want for president. I gusee grizzley bears really isn't your thing. Put her with any of the above mentioned ladies and they woud tare her to shreds. Fiorina can't hold a candle to them and her and palin who supports her should go take civic lessons .
Hey lets elect someone who ran their company so far into the ground the board fired her, but she got her $27 million golden parachute.
just a peek at her record while running HP
sent 10,000 jobs overseas and is proud of it
had dealing with Iran while Iran on the sanctions list for US companies
there are many more and if you can find a worker (or former) at HP, they will tell you she SUCKED and glad she is gone!
I'm from CA and I know Carly sent jobs away from CA while at the helm of HP; I'm another who was there. Thanks to their current CEO, Mark Hurd, they are performing much better now. To those who say Boxer sent jobs away, what are the facts please? Neither Whitman nor Fiorina will get my vote....no way.
As for jobs, Boxer voted to repeal the tax break for businesses who move US jobs offshore, how does that make her responsible for lost jobs in CA? Fiorina actually had her hand on moving HP jobs offshore from CA and elsewhere in the States. Get real!
no Carly Fiorina was not let go because she had a disagreement on strategy with the 'silver spoon heirs' who had board seats.
she was SHOWN THE DOOR for sending HP into a tail spin and for SPYING ON FELLOW BOARD members
It was to HP's horror to experience Carly's strategic moves while in the job and HP has yet to recover to this day.
HP is a shell of what it once was with most of its functioning (finance etc) taking place in India
Thank you for nothing Fiorina, you butchered HP
What will you think Carly do for Californians? Lay off people and Cut off unemployment benefits as she did for HP employees
