Is the U.S. battery business for real?

New York (CNNMoney.com) - President Obama is once again stumping for stimulus at one of his favorite spots: a plant that makes batteries for electric cars.

These plants have been a high profile piece of the controversial stimulus package, and Obama has visited at least four of them since stimulus was enacted. Dozens of projects dedicated to advanced batteries have received over $2 billion in federal funding as part of the administration's $800 billion-plus plan to revive the economy, create jobs, and push the manufacturing sector into the 21st century.

"These are jobs in the industries of the future," Obama said Thursday at the groundbreaking of the Compact Power plant in Holland Mich.

We have to regain our manufacturing base in this country. Too many outsourced jobs and sweet deals to the corporate bosses by the REPUBLICANS for all those years.
Finally, our President is re-creating that manufacturing base and what do the republicans do? OBSTRUCT, LIE, CHEER FOR FAILURE.

Regardless of political affiliation, what the Republicans are doing is NOT DEMOCRACY. It's hoping for the United States to fail. That is treason. Wave your unread copy of the Constitution all you want, we know the truth and it's the Republicans who are trying to make this country fail.

300 jobs at this plant, eh? Making batteries for goofy looking wind-up golf carts that NO ONE wants to buy or drive.

    At what cost?

    About $250K per job?

Obama, you are way in over your head.

Giving away tax money to bolster companies to hire people to produce products that the buying public doesn't want and refuses to buy isn't just dumb, it's borderline criminal.

It's time for you to go, Barry. The way we achieve that is to take both houses of congress away from you. With no more money, your ability to create mischief is greatly reduced.

President Obama is a very intelligent man!!! This URKS a lot of people and that is where the HATE comes from.

No matter what accomplishments President Obama makes – he will be ridiculed. In the end, everyone who has HATED would eat all of the words they spewed about him.

This is what SCARES the RepubliCAN'Ts!!! They keep saying NO to everything while President Obama is SOLVING everything. Soon, they're going to look so damn stupid and would not be able to claim any of the victoryies!!!

The only way this will work is if banks start lending money to people to buy Electric Vehicles otherwise those batteries and electric vehicles are just going to sit there, at which point the attempt/idea to move us into new technoloby will will end up in the shredder. Are banks going to approve everyone for a new electric vehicle????? that remains to be seen.

This is a stupid question, maybe CNN needs to go touch a wall or something to determine if its real.

Yes, can anyone give me a good reason we should import batteries from another country instead of making them here?

    I didn't think so.

Another big waste of tax money to promote the obamamobile, why use expensive batteries, why not use a big rubber band? I can picture what will happen when a 18 wheeler hits one of these four wheeled flashlights.

It sure is and the technology is getting better and more innovative. Companies are even building public battery recharge stations for the many hybrid cars now on the road.
Solar energy is also very real and we have a number of companies in the US manufacturing solar panels and componentry. There are even installation companies who know how to put them on your house or business and set you up to run off the energy they create. Appliance companies are even now building water heaters and other devices that be attached to solar panels.
America has the people and the technology to make clean energy and more jobs right now.
Just guess who is blocking the bill??? The GObPers who want to protect the oil companies. Nobody ever fought and died in a war to get solar energy or battery power. Our 5 stated Gulf state region was never destroyed by using the sun for energy. Those Republicans just love war you know.
Clean Energy is real, here, and ready to go. We just need the legislation passed for tax credits, startup loans, and we will have a whole new manufacturing industry providing millions of jobs.
Tell your Republican oil lovers to move into this century and, for once, DO something for moving America forward!

Anyone who has studied the situation knows that hydrogen cells are the future and Obozo's battery fetish is just a scheme to spend more of our hard earned money on crap for unions than real research and jobs.

Yes it's real. And none to soon.

Cheney is now battery-operated and has to be plugged into the wall at night - bet he is hoping for a small long-lasting battery.

Americans can do it - we put a man on the moon - we started with a short flight a few decades ago and now we have 747's. We even have test flight for a solar-powered airplane. IT'S A START.

American's CAN DO IT. - AND WILL.
