Poll: Palin hot amongst Republicans, others not so much

According to a new poll, 76 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of Sarah Palin.
According to a new poll, 76 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of Sarah Palin.

Washington (CNN) – For many Democrats in Washington, a Sarah Palin presidential run would be a dream come true.

As their thinking goes, Palin's popularity among Republican base voters in early primary states would be enough to swamp the rest of the 2012 field and vault the conservative firebrand to the GOP nomination.

But in a general election, her standing among independent and swing voters, which began to crater in the closing weeks of the 2008 presidential race, might be too much to overcome.

New (admittedly early) polling data suggests that very scenario could play out if she decides to seek the White House.

According to a new Gallup survey, 76 percent of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Palin - the highest rating among any of the presumed presidential candidates. The former Alaska governor also maintains the strongest name recognition of any potential candidate, while only 20 percent of Republicans view her unfavorably.

Palin is trailed by Mike Huckabee (a 65 percent favorable rating), Newt Gingrich (64 percent) and Mitt Romney (54 percent). Bobby Jindal, who has yet to signal any serious 2012 intentions, had 45 percent favorable rating among Republicans.

Among all Americans, though, Palin's numbers are upside down. More Americans view her in a negative light (47 percent) than a positive one (44 percent). What's more, only nine percent of Americans haven't formed an opinion of the former Alaska governor, making it difficult for her to correct that deficit.

Romney, meanwhile, appears to have repaired his image among Americans since the height of the contentious Republican primary battle in February 2008, when his unfavorable rating was at 46 percent. Now, 36 percent of Americans have a favorable view of Romney, with 28 percent having an unfavorable view.

The Gallup poll surveyed 1,020 adults between July 8-11 and has a sampling error of +/- 4 percentage points. Several potential candidates, namely Tim Pawlenty, were not included in the survey.

I would looove it if the Wassilla Hillbilly (no disrespect to hillbillies) made a run for the White House, on so many levels! First and most importantly she would provide us with constant comic-relief. Secondly she would open the floodgates for all types of Rethuglikkklan fools to throw their hat in the ring as well, assuming, and correctly so, that if she, in all her ignorant glory, has the nerve to run then so do they.

Might I point out though, that name recognition amongst Rethugs means less than nothing. Please see: Boehner, Sanford, Crazy Angle, Rush, Jindahl, McCain, Cheney, The Shrub (spit three times!), Steele, and too many others to mention. Worthless, the whole lot of them.

44% view her positively? That many? I assume a huge chunk of those people answered "positively" because she's the source of so much laughter.

People on the right are waking up to the fact that palin might have cost john mccain the election, then got rich from it. I dont see her giving any of that money to her real people in the mid west or south. She got rich because she was younger and some say better looking then john mccain. She is a Barnum and Bailey selling wolf tickets..

Why does the USA not put a new law into place: IQ testing for all those who try to become either Senator, Governor and the most stringent of tests for those who aspire to lead the country as President.
Looking at Palin, seriously, she cant have an IQ higher than Bush and look at what THAT guy did to the world..:(

This republican does not have a positive view of her. She's a pretty face with an empty skull. She'd be run out of town in about 2 months with her (and her family's) behavior. Unacceptable. While I have my doubts about Obama's ability to lead this country, I do believe he has a good grasp of family and presents an even better picture to our young people about dealing with challenges and having a good marriage while balancing work and kids. This woman is all over the map and the fact that she quit at the first sign of adversity while being governor speaks volumes to me. If she had nothing to hide, why walk away?? I just don't buy the Palin brand.. sorry.. I'll take Scott Brown, Huckabee, or even a near 90 year old McCain over her any day of the week. God help us all if she has a legitimate shot.

I don't know why anyone would ever consider voting for Sarah Palinever again for any political position, as she would resign when the job got tough... and we would all have to listen to her confusing, halfbaked rational as she ran for the door hurling insults at the press and any one else who she considered nonsupportive. It would be the same song – second verse.

Sarah Palin is a very intelligent woman and I believe should certainly would make a good VP. even though many of the comment board had made bad comments about her. There is a tremendous amount of jealousy by the younger set against Palin and its no doubt because she has accomplished in her life what many young people will not. She is good for the republican party and helped candidates get elected. Palin is also is a drawing card and a good fundraiser.

Palin is an empty-headed suit peddled around by useless media like CNN, FOX, NBC because they have forgotten how to report news. Palin can grab cash and go home because that is all she will ever do. She will never fly airforce one.

personally I would LOVE to see Sarah Palin make a run for the GOP nomination. That would mean all the other candidates would get a chance to call her out on her foolishness and make a statement WHY she should NOT be the next POTUS. So far very few GOPers have said negative things about Mrs. Palin, but in a campaign will they hold back? I doubt it. Mitt, Newt, Huckabee and maybe Chris Brown all taking their shots at Sarah Palin saying some of the same stuff the anti-Palin folks have been saying for the past few years. Will it be fun? You betcha!!

Sarah Palin doesn't care what her poll numbers are. As long as she makes millions of dollars each year talking about government death panels, Bristol's abstinence tour, and hopey changy stuff, she'll be a happy little charlatan. A dumb one, but happy.

Public Policy Polling just did a poll for Barack Obama against five potential Republican challengers for the 2012 presidential campaign, and the only one Obama beat was … Jan Brewer. He trails Mitt Romney 46-43, Mike Huckabee 47-45, Newt Gingrich 46-45, and is even tied with Sarah Palin at 46. BUYERS REMORE MUCH....

Sarah Palin, like most of the GOP/Tea Party, are Constitutionally iliterate or have not even read the Constitution of the USA due to their limited reading comprehension.

If Palin does get the nomination, I'm leaving the country and applying for citizenship elsewhere, maybe Australia. In America there are just too, too many utterly stupid, under-educated and poorly educated, and ridiculous right ring religious fanatics, that Palin could actually become President. What has America come to?

Even if you put lipstick on Sarah Palin...it's still Sarah Palin. Someone who can't finish a job they were elected to do. She's more of a celebrity rather than a politician who would know how to lead this country.
