(Updated with additional context)

(CNN) – Republican Sen. David Vitter apologized to MSNBC host Rachel Maddow Friday after jesting on a radio program that she only looked like a woman “a long time ago.”

“Regarding my remark during a radio conversation today, I apologize,” Vitter wrote in a letter to Maddow. “The hosts made their comment and I obviously chimed in. While we do not usually agree on the issues, I do not think you deserved that comment.”

Vitter’s comments came during an appearance on Rush Radio 99.5 in New Orleans Friday morning, during which the radio hosts joked about a high school photo of Maddow with long blond hair. The MSNBC host currently has short brown hair.

“Must have been a long time ago,” Vitter joked when the hosts said the photo portrays Maddow as “looking like a woman.”

Maddow has not responded to the comments.

Vitter is currently in a primary battle against former Louisiana Supreme Court justice Chet Traylor. Traylor told CNN Monday that while he had been considering a run since last summer; it wasn't until the last two weeks that he took another look at the race, after being flooded with calls urging him to run.

Should Vitter win that race, he will face Democratic Rep. Charlie Melancon in the general election. Despite a tumultuous first term, Vitter's favorability rating has remained high and Melancon has as yet struggled to gain serious footing.

Forget the book's cover, it's whats inside that counts! If only Vitter and the rest of his ilk had half as much intellegence and education as Maddow, our government would be much improved.

What do Kagan, Maddow, Reno and Napolitano have in common? Hey, I'm just axing the question.

Any one of them has more intelligence than 12 Republicans.
    Hey, I'm just saying.

Republican apologies are a daily occurance.
Today it's this jerk, tomorrow it will be another Republican jerk.
    Same garbarge, just different jerks.

Whatever her sexual preference, Rachel is HOT HOT HOT...and you throw in one of the smartest political brains with that hotness, and you got one perfect woman...

Rachel will run circles and embarrass diaper boy Vitter on any day at any time, she's just too much of a class act to do it...

He can apologize 'til the cows come home, but he can't take back the exposure of his true feelings. People don't make racist or sexist or homophobic comments unless they are in fact bigots.

Rachel Maddow is brilliant and very witty. I don't miss a single episode of her show on MSNBC. Her intelligent sarcasm, laced with superb insights, are a pleasure to witness, and she is a perfect counter to that other channel, pox news. O'really, hammtiy, limpballs, bleach and others are just stupid little dolts who try, and fail, at being smart.
The repuglicans only know how to spew ugly comments and opinions about just about anyone who makes sense. Keeps them from looking at their pathetic, mirthless selves.
Oh yes, POX never makes sense...just pouty noise.

The Republican party is like several high school cliques that are scared they may lose power. You have the mean girls like C.F., the popular cheerleaders, like Palin, and the stupid jock, this guy. No wonder they didn't get anything done in eight years. They were all too busy worrying about each other's hair and who was dating who. Watching Congress is like watching Gossip Girl lately. I hope that Americans send a message and vote all of these sorry excuses for politician out of office. Their services would be better used on reality television. Rachel Maddow is smart, kind, and she talks about real issues. If he wants a blond Barbie doll, he should leave his TV on Fox News.

Funny how Rush didn't say he was sorry. Vitter must be smarter than Rush. He knew not to pick a fight with Maddow. Rush couldn't debate her on his best day without resorting to typical Repulipuke comments like the one's he always uses.

How is Vitter still in office. Oh I forgot. The people who vote for him are morons.

As a male Republican I have to say I do not care too much for Rachel Maddow BUT I think Vitter is either blind or dumb or both for saying she doesn't look like a woman. She does to me and I don;t even like her that much. As a matter a fact I find I find her quite attractive.

Even as a joke I just don;t see how it's funny.. only funny is she looks like a man except she doesn't.

This guy is amazing. How can anyone let him represent them? This comment from the "family values" guy that hires a prostitute? Look out Rachel. He is looking you over. He must be on the prowl again. I guess his wife will once again "forgive" him & look the other way.

    Kenneth Krieger,

What??? When did common sense become "far left", do you even know what far left is??? I'll give you a clue, it's not France.

Far left....oh please, if the rest of the worlds conservatives have the same ideology as our Liberals, then calling our left, FAR LEFT is ludicrous.

But if you look at the right in our country, a lot of their ideas are on par with the Talibans of the world, literally and word for word (just substitute the word Islam for Christianity)

@Kenneth – Sir, why in the world would you think it a good idea to put your phone number in a comments area? All I had to do was go to whitepages.com and do a reverse lookup to see exactly where you live, your approximate age [listed at +65] and your wife's name.

CNN – Please take this gentleman's comment down or take his phone number out of the comment. I don't think he realizes what kind of information is available with just a phone number and what type of cranks will be calling him at all hours of the night.

Our elecetd officials should watch their backs more when aligning themselves with the profiteering antagonists blowhards like Limbaugh and Glen Beck that aren't risking anything but gaining millions while they devide this country and hand over the Republican party to self righteous wingnuts willing to destroy our rights by handing over our country to covert government, big oil, pharma and the insurance industry , oh and kiss the bill of rights goodbye!

Watching Rachel Maddow regularly I'd say she is left of center but not always however she is willing to dig deep and expose these creeps when most networks are afraid to offend anyone right of center. I also respect that she is gay and isn't pretending to be anything but herself; smart and appealing.

No more apologies will be accepted from the republicans. We on the left, are lucky enough to have most of the nation's top minds at our disposal. Do these fools really wanna scrap with us? I think not. Better apologize then, little wussies.

This was silly. She's a big girl and should not care about apologies over comments that meant nothing in the first place. Did Vitter do this just to smokescreen his uglier and broader comments of just a few days ago?

During the Bush years the Republicans raised name calling and personal insults to an art form. Usually the last resort of a school-yard bully mentality.

Rachel Maddow is by far the smartest. She has her slant but she carries herself with dignity. She does not yell, she does not belittle her guests and does not mind getting people from the other side. At least she does get people from the other side. This unlike Hannity and Beck who howl and try to act like the men they are not.

A symptom of the apocalypse that we're talking about how she looks. More important, is she brilliant, thoughtful, and articulate, with a genuine willingness to listen to the other side, if only to let them hang themselves. He's pathetic and weak-minded. If we could turn our national stupidity surplus into money, Lousiana and South Carolina politicians alone could pay off our national debt this week.

    You know CNN.........

Perhaps if you posted the appropriate proportions of replies instead of obviouse censoring of anyone who goes against your bed wetting liberal views, maybe then you could compete with F.OX. NE.WS. Until then....

    F.O.XS NE.WS. #1 for news.
