Officials: National Guard troops headed to border next month

(CNN) - The United States will deploy 1,200 National Guard troops to assist with border protection starting August 1, the Obama administration announced Monday.

In addition, approximately 300 additional Customs and Border Protection agents will be added and will be complemented by an increase in technology and six aircraft, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Alan Bersin said Monday at a joint press conference with the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security.

Officials had previously announced the troop deployment, but a date for it had not been given.

So, why isn't anyone asking why Gov. Brewer didn't already deploy "her" troops to the border? The National Guard works for the Governor, not the President. The answer is that if the President deploys them, the Federal government, not the State, foots the bill. So, ask yourself why this Governor, who is so critical of the Federal government demanded federalization of her troops. Typical hypocritical, cynical, polital maneuvering. Wise up, folks, your anti-everything, right-wing, tea party heroes are politicians, too.
Oh, and for those who said it's not enough troops, we are a little busy handling two wars right now, but your call is important to us, so we'll get back to you as soon as we can...

Lets give them orders to shoot to kill. That would start tightening the border.

    Jerry,
Yeah, about that nuke.... 500 engineers are being hired by Seargent and Lundy to design that Texas nucrlear power plant. By next year there should be 25,000 new jobs for the construction phase.
You should do a little research before you show how ignorant you REALLY are.

Hey "Get a Grip" @ 12:46PM...I really hope you mean adding 5-to-6 thousand to Border Patrol and ICE but not that many NG troops.

I'm a "Zonie" and can tell ya we need full time, properly trained "Immigration and Border Control" kind of boots on the gound from CA to TX, not troops who will just give them "operations" support.

Our NG troops deserve better than that kind of job and our Border Patrol folks genuinley need their own permanent people for the long haul...

What a token! He sends 1200 troops there to be picked off – he is doing it just to say he did it. He doesn't want the borders closed at all – he is pandering for the votes! Just as he doesn't want the oil leak to be repaired – how many times has he been on TV to reassure the American people – how many times has he been to the Gulf? His first priority is NOT the security of Americans – not at all!

Won't really make a bit of difference. The only way to truly fix "the border" is to have a Latin America summit to address the root causes i.e. government corruption, overpopulation...also the Catholic Church desperately need reform to allow for proper birth control methods.

The truth that the Neo-Confederates will never admit, is that Big $ Lobbyists...such as the Construction Industry that personally met with George Bush...actually WANT illegals because they increase profit margins with a steady stream of cheap labor with no benefits. It will cost a trillion dollars to have a high-tech border that's 100% secure.
    Is it worth it?

You people make me sick. If he didn't send troops, you'd criticize the President for that. If he sends troops, you criticize him for that. If there's an article about a Democrat, all the Repugs and Tea Partiers come on the blogs with nasty things to say about Democrats. If there's an article about a Republican, a bunch of you come on to criticize Republicans. Jesus Christ! Get a f*ing life! Is this your idea of political discourse?

I wonder why the President is not sending the N.G. to our northern borders to stop all the illegal Canadians who travel to America daily or who are living in America with expired visa's. Oh I forgot most of them are white, what was I thinking!
