Washington (CNN) - House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer acknowledged Tuesday that closing down the Guantanamo Bay prison is not a top priority for congressional Democrats.
In response to a question from a reporter about where shutting down Gitmo stands, Hoyer said, "I think that's not an item, as you point out, of real current discussion. There's some very big issues confronting us - dealing with growing the economy and Iraq and Afghanistan."
Hoyer added, "I think you're not going to see it discussed very broadly in the near term."
It darn well ought to be a priority. This is the reason many Democrats and Independents voted for Obama. He made a promise...now keep it!
Gitmo shut-down not a priority, top Dem says
I agree. As things stand shutting down Gitmo would NOT be at the top of my list. There are far too many other important issues at hand that need to be fully addressed before Gitmo gets checked off the list.
To Massachusetts Conservative or Fair is Fair: In response to you accussing me of 'butchering' the English language, might I suggest that you endeavor to further YOUR education so that you might stop feeling threatened when you encounter someone with an expanded vocabulary. Do not let the "Dominican" in my moniker fool you, 'kay?!
WHAT!!!!!!! But Obama promised.
Question of the day: What is an Obama promise worth?
Funny...it was a BIG priority about 18 months ago. It's not a big priority now because they failed.
BUT BUT BUT.....On June 24, 07 candidate Obama told the crowd in San Antonio, TX he wanted Gitmo closed.
On 01-23-09 following his inauguration, and by Executive Order #13492, Obama said Gitmo would be closed within one year.
Gee, seems to me Obama has a real problem of speaking before thinking.
It sure was a priority of Obama's campaign and the people who voted for him. Too bad Democrats never keep their word.
Wow and this is just so un-American I can't stand it.
Why does America have a Concentration camp? People held for years without being charged, people tortured, people killed and this is all done in America's name. I feel shame pure shame for what the ideals of my country can rationalized today.
You mean it is no longer a priority because Bush is no longer President and Congressional Democrats were just using the closure of Gitmo and our national security as a political battering ram?
No, Steny, you CAN'T mean that!!!
It never was a big issue for Democrats. Nor was the repeal of DADT, or ending the Bush wars or the Bush tax cuts or many other things that Obama and the Dems gave lip service to during the last campaign cycle. Obama is just Bush lite and Congressional Democrats are too interested in filling their pockets with corporate cash to do anything to upset the applecart. This President has been a failure no matter what end of the political spectrum one sits on and needs to go. We Democrats can only hope that he will not run for re-election. Obama has always been more interested in the history books than in doing the right thing for the nation. What a disgrace.
This is wrong – Gitmo is a symbol of all that the Bush years stood for.
