Gitmo shut-down not a priority, top Dem says

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Tuesday that closing the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center is not a priority for House Democrats.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Tuesday that closing the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center is not a priority for House Democrats.

Washington (CNN) - House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer acknowledged Tuesday that closing down the Guantanamo Bay prison is not a top priority for congressional Democrats.

In response to a question from a reporter about where shutting down Gitmo stands, Hoyer said, "I think that's not an item, as you point out, of real current discussion. There's some very big issues confronting us - dealing with growing the economy and Iraq and Afghanistan."

Hoyer added, "I think you're not going to see it discussed very broadly in the near term."

  1. Save America, impeach the treasonous republicans

It has always been a priority of mine, and I would like them to rethink it after the November elections.

It's a broken promise. But, I think that it is important to keep it open.

Finally, they saw things realistically and realized Gitmo is not a priority to most of us but a waste of time. We need them to concentrate on jobs, moving the economy, helping businesses, clean up Louisiana, etc...

One of the first thing that Obama did when he became president was order that GITMObe closed. It was that important !!! It was to be shutdown in Jan,2010.Exactly what has changed for Mr. Hoyer to say that it's not that important ,now.

So Obozo and the DemocRATS viciously attack George Bush for YEARS about Gitmo and now they are in power and refuse to close it??!! More lies and stupidity from an inexperienced community organizer that thought he could just come in and close it down by waving his magic pen.

I guess moving all of the prisoners to the US or setting them free must have been too much for their soft-on-terrorism image to handle?

How many Obozo lies have to be shown before the American people WAKE UP??!! Obozo and the DemocRATS will lie, steal and cheat to get what they want. They are the most corrupt people on the planet.

Save America... Vote every DemocRAT OUT of office!

So how many campaign promises can we count that Obama has turned around and taken the opposite position. My count is 19 now? Good thing 2012 is a ways away yet.

The shut down of Gitmo was just a campaign promise by obama and like all of the rest is not a priority. Just a lie to produce votes.

I don't understand?? Barry said they were going to close Gitmo within a year of his taking office....something about "world perception"?? almost like he was lieing....nah, can't be that

Not a priority!!! That can't be!!! GITMO is the symbol to the world of how nasty the U.S. is! What will the ultra liberals do? President Obama specifically promised closing GITMO in his 1st year! Now, almost 2 years later, it's not even being discussed???

When will you people finally wake up and realize you bought into a fantasy?
9.5% unemployment, Gibbs says that's not expected to change anytime soon.
Almost a trillion $$$ in stimulus, with little to no results.
The Presidents economic advisor basically stated they are pulling the jobs "saved or created" out of the air.
I'm so glad they are at least sticking to their PAYGO resolution........oh wait, .....they're not..........they just decided every expenditure is now at "emergency" status!

How's that "hopey, changey" thing working out for ya?

Ya can't spend yourself out of bankruptcy, only into it!!!

    Common Sense!!!

Gitmo itself isn't the problem; activities associated with it are: rendition, torture, lack of habeas corpus, etc. If the administration and the Justice Dept would condemn and eliminate the above, then they could keep Gitmo.

Let NOAA, the Navy and Coast Guard use is as an emergency preparedness base.

Apparently niether are JOBS or the ECONOMY to the loons in the Whiote House and Congress. Can't believe Gitmo couldn't be closed by the annoited one, it was supposed to be so easy. That's the difference between a leader and a talking head.

Hoyer added, "I think you're not going to see it discussed very broadly in the near term."

You certainly won't hear it discussed here at CNN again.

Interesting. In June 2007, Hoyer said that Gitmo was "an international disgrace that every day continues to sully this great nation's reputation". So ... it was a big deal three years ago, but it isn't now. I wonder what changed.......

Told ya the whole we want gitmo closed was a lie by the libs.

On the bright side, at least with Obama the lib as president, we no longer have millions of Americans praying to hear about our troops dying in Iraq and Afganistan to score some cheap political points.
