Senate Judiciary approves Kagan

Washington (CNN) - The Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday approved the nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to become the nation's fourth female Supreme Court justice, setting up a final confirmation vote by the Senate.

The committee vote broke down mostly along partisan lines, with one Republican joining the panel's Democrats in sending the nomination to the full Senate on a 13-6 vote.

Democrats repeatedly characterized Kagan as a strong legal thinker who would be a fair judge, while Republicans slammed her as an inexperienced activist who would be unable to divorce her legal judgments from her political opinions.

Members on both sides expressed frustration with a confirmation hearing process many observers say increasingly yields few clear answers about a nominee's judicial philosophy.

    Excellent!

Now, if the Senate Republicans would stop hurting Americans and pass the unemployment benefit extension, I'd be even more happy.

Right thing to do. I hope Obama has to fill one or two more justices and they are one of those Ultra Conservatives move the Court to the middle. Giving Corporations unlimited powers to effect US Elections was the last draw.

  6. Save America, impeach the treasonous republicans

In 2000 we put our future in the hands of an incompetent big oil man. After 8 horrendous years and driving the country to the brink of a great depression, we need to make sure the GOP baggers never get the opportunity to destroy the U.S. again. Under the former president, our constitution was attacked, government grew, trillions of dollars were spent on unnecessary wars, and government programs were created without being funded. VOTE "NO!" TO THE PARTY OF NO IN NOVEMBER!!!!

Once again, a nominee for a critical responsibility affecting the future of this nation is allowed to skate - not truthfully answer or fail to answer questions put to her. It is becoming more and more apparent that the Senate's Constitutional respnsibility for "advice and consent" continues to be watered down and the loss is becoming more and more acceptable to the Executive branch of government (both parties) and the electorate. Integrity is no longer a characteristic required by those who's egos and personal agendas are the driving motivation for government "non-service".

Yeah the Bush years are coming again. Two glorious foreign wars to keep us busy and bankrupt our economy. Maybe we'll use nukes this time. Shouda last time. Keep the poor and uppity nonWASP in line. Dick Cheney for Prez. What do you mean he's almost dead? His bionic heart will beep forever. Palin for Secretary of State. Long live the glorious Tea Party!

I don't even want to give any attention to the insulting jerk whose name I won't repeat who uses all the CAPITAL LETTERS AND EXCLAMATION POINTS by responding to his stupid rant, but I will.

Listen, if we have to live with "the Roberts Court" (you know the one who thinks international corporations should have the same rights as an American citizen) then we should at least be allowed a few justices that don't make us throw up a little bit in our mouths ever time we hear their names. That seems fair enough after the chaos your party has caused during the W rein of terror.

And I will vote for the people I think are best to help lead this country. We are in the midst of saving your behind from two unfunded wars, deregulation gone wild, a hear nothing, do nothing, say nothing lack of policies on immigration reform and goofy social policies that try to tell us how to live our lives. We are NOT going back. We WILL continue to move forward!

  19. hope?

Republicans don't care what race or sex the supreme court nominees were. They just don't want a couple Obama rubber stamps–which we now have (for the next forty years).

Sotomayor already showed that she was willing to say whatever to get the nod. During the approval process she said that she would stand up for the Second Amendment. Yet, she was one of 4 Supreme Court judges to support a gun ban (last month).

Kagen might be good. I hope so. Much like Obama, we have very little evidence of past experience to judge her from. Hopefully she doesn't pull and Obama and give us what we didn't want in the name of 'change'.
    ----
Hopefully, democrats will not extend unemployment past 2 YEARS without cutting spending (the Republican plan). ThinkAgain needs to think the first time.

  20. Happy with Obama/Not Happy with Repubs

Too bad "Barack.Hussein.Obama-America's-Incompetent-DICTATOR " can't accept the fact that his side didn't win the election. His (my assumption, could be she) assertion that Sotomayer lied is another piece of republican misinformation. What about Roberts and Alito statement concering stare decisis? They worshipped at that altar during their confirmation hearings and then as soon as they had an opportunity to overturn over 100 years of precedent, they did it. Now that is what I call an activist court. Kagan, with her intellect, will be a real challenge to the right-wing cabal that currently dominates the court.

The bottom line is that she has been approved by the judicial committee today, obviusly majority is convinced with her capability, and they and then the majority in the full Senate will confirm her for this position. Any voices against her will then have to keep quiet.

Jeff Sessions is just having a fit because she is superior to him and his confirmation was derailed. Meaning, he was not worthy of being on the U. S. Supreme Court.

She is gifted in reading. Her experience as a solicitor general has prepared her well for this job. And what scares the Republicans the most is that she will be able to judge whether the laws the Senate & House passes meet and surpass the constitution.

Poor Jeff, he couldn't get pass the screening process!!

Idiot, just like the rest of your ilk. You probably love Sarah.

Why don't you and your teabagger friends just face the fact that if it wasn't for Obama we would probably be in a war with Korea, most of the middle class would be standing in food lines, and our coastal shores would be black with oil from the "Drill baby drill" crowd you seem to be a part of.

  24. Cheers for Senator Graham

Very rare for me to congratulate a Republican - but Lindsey Graham's vote for Kagan is a pleasant surprise ... maybe there is hope for less partisanship in Congress ... and note I think that the Democrats play politics as well - everyone just needs to grow up!!! Thanks Senator Graham!

To "Barack.Hussein.Obama-America's-Incompetent-DICTATOR" – go back into your bomb shelter and don't come out until your mommy says it's safe.

If he *were* a "dictator" do you really think he would have any problems getting legislation through Congress? Do you think there would be any debate over Supreme Court nominees? Do you think?

    Get over it.
